| The West Los Angeles trio A.I. is comprised of brothers Nick (vocals/guitar) and Zack Young (drums/percussion) and Pablo Manzarek (bass/keyboards) and they've had their hands in music since their baby days.
In 1989, Nick Young got a guitar for his birthday and later, Zack Young got a bass and the two started taking lessons to perfect their skills. Their father, Robert Young, is a filmmaker who's known for directing the 1988 family drama Dominick and Eugene and the Farrah Fawcett TV thriller Extremities. Joe Young, a great uncle who was a founding member of ASCAP, was a Tin Pan Alley vocalist and songwriter during the early 1920s and 1930. For Nick and Zack Young, music was in the genes. As for Pablo Manzarek, it's quite obvious that he's related to the famous Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek, for he is his son. The younger Manzarek grew up playing drums and bass and eventually attended college in San Francisco to study engineering. Music was in his blood as well, and Manzarek left school. He founded his own label, Carpet Bomb, and made documentaries until meeting the brothers Young in the late 1990s.
By the new millennium, they were A.I. and shaping a quasi-psychedelic rock sound. Dreamworks Records picked 'em up and quickly, A.I. found themselves in the studio with ex-Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna. In summer 2002, the band issued their debut album Artificial Intelligence. Tours with Alien Crime Syndicate and Moth soon followed. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide |
