By most accounts, Metallica and Lou Reed's "dark, loud" collaboration Lulu is an overlong, calamitous nightmare. The album comes out October 31st, but it's currently streaming on the Loutellica official site, so if you have a hankering for 87 minutes of Reed's cranky poetry recited over turgid riffs, go for it. (Or, you can listen to Tom Waits' Bad as Me twice, and actually enjoy it, in the same amount of time.) The Amp heard the 30-second preview of "The View," and that was a half-minute too much for our tastes.
Even the cover was terrible; nothing so ugly could ever adorn something worth listening to. Chuck Klosterman's lethal takedown of Lulu for Grantland pretty much encapsulates what went wrong with the potentially epic collaboration, and now it appears Metallica is also eager to put the album firmly in their rearview: They've already started working on a new album.
