  • Buju Banton might not be a household name in the U.S., but the reggae singer is perhaps the biggest star without the last name "Marley" that the genre has produced in decades. Banton has been nominated five times in the Grammys' Best Reggae Album category, finally taking home the award four months ago for his album Before the Dawn. However, that'll probably be the last Grammy that Banton wins for the foreseeable future. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for his role in a massive cocaine deal. Banton was also found guilty of bad things like possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense and using a telephone to facilitate a drug trafficking offense.

This was Banton's second time facing trial for the charges; last year, a judge ruled a mistrial after the jury became deadlocked. While many figures in the hip-hop world posture themselves as drug kingpins in their music, Banton was reportedly enjoying an actual side job as a Scarface-in-the-making.

  • Thanks to a one-two punch via Spin and MTV News, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have successfully made us literally say "hmm, interesting" five times today while reading up on their upcoming album I'm With You. Are you ready to be sort of surprised?

Flea says the band nearly broke up after 2006's bloated double disc Stadium Arcadium, thus the long pause between records.
"I initiated [the break]. ... It had come to a point where it felt dysfunctional and not fun. ... I wanted to get away to give the band a chance to survive."

I'm With You, their first studio album in over five years, is about weighty topics.
"[It's] about life and death and betrayal and [Anthony Kiedis'] relationship to the world," Flea explains. "It's much more poignant than our other records." Perhaps here's referring to "Californication"?

The new album features African influences!
"Josh [Klinghoffer, the band's new guitarist] and I tripped around Ethiopia with a group called Africa Express, which Damon Albarn

  • Once, many years ago, Prince was an immensely talented and controversial sexual deviant who penned songs called "Rockhard in a Funky Place" and "Jack U Off." A decade ago though, Prince found religion, immersing himself in being a Jehovah's Witness. Now scantily clad ladies like Apollonia don't catch his eye anymore; it's women dressed head-to-toe in garments dictated by their religious customs. Really. Prince may still look younger than 53, but his age has begun to show in some comments to the Guardian.

"It's fun being in Islamic countries, to know there's only one religion. There's order. You wear a burqa. There's no choice. People are happy with that." It's probably been a long time since Prince took a global studies class, otherwise he'd know that not everyone -- namely females in Islamic countries and their advocates -- is happy wearing burqas. They're oppressive, and they're a symbol of the huge gap between the rights of men and women there. When the Guardian pointed that out to

  • Word on the street is U2 are squabbling over the set list for their big headlining set at Glastonbury this weekend. "Everybody seems to have a slightly different opinion, which is not good news," drummer Larry Mullen Jr. tells the BBC. "There's the 'Where the Streets Have No Name' camp and then there's the more subtle approach, the Achtung Baby dynamic approach where you build slowly. Then there are those who think we should open with '40'. It goes on. There are an awful lot of opinions."

There are an awful lot of opinions, Larry. We have one, too, and we're willing to step up and resolve this internal conflict to preserve the integrity of the "best band in the world" (duh, Bono's words!). Yes, The Amp has put together the ideal Glastonbury set list for you. Feel free to use it, free of charge, boys!

  • In the second installment of Stephen Colbert's three-part interview with Jack White (check out Part One if you haven't already), the late-night host and the Third Man record exec cut right to the matter at hand: Turning Colbert back into a Grammy-winning musician. Colbert won a Grammy in 2010 -- in the Best Comedy Album category, but still -- and after getting shut out of nominations this year, Colbert makes White promise to return him to Grammy glory in 2012. White's idea: Team Colbert with the Third Man act Black Belles. They possess the "musical talent and looks," while Colbert contributes "other qualities," like a strange drug habit involving heroin and the all-encompassing vitamin Centrum.

The highlight of Part Two comes when Colbert asks White, over and over again, who his influences are. "Bob Dylan's pretty good," White says. Pretty good? Understatement. The third chapter in the interview will air tonight on The Colbert Report.

  • Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson first started discussing a solo album in 2006, when she told Billboard, "I've got no timetable. I'm sort of sick of timetables, to be honest. I just want to live my life a little freely and not adhere to any schedule -- just make music and have fun."

Over the next few years, a few demos emerged from her "So Called Noir" sessions, including "In the Snow," but not much else. Manson blogged on MySpace in '08, saying label reps had heard her music and thought it was too dark. "I'm 41, I'm a woman not a kid. I have no interest in making silly pop music and I don't want to wear a silly sexy outfit and sell myself short," she wrote. Die-hard fans started a Facebook group to lobby her label to release her "Noir Album," writing, "Shirley doesn't need to sing stuff like: 'Rich Girl,' 'Sweet Scape' or 'Cool' to sell records." They likely meant "Sweet Escape," as these are all digs at fellow '90s frontwoman Gwen Stefani.

Okay, so what ever happened to this solo
