The first single from Vedder's solo album, "Longing to Belong," debuted on a handful of rock stations both eager to add anything by Vedder to their playlist and adventurous enough to ask rock fans to enjoy some ukulele between tracks by Linkin Park and Green Day, and it's similar to Vedder's work on the soundtrack for Into the Wild. Except, with a uke. Have a listen (via Music Box):
We kind of like it; On Pearl Jam's Backspacer, we felt the toll of two decades made the band's trademark sound grow stagnant, but this is a nice change of direction and surpasses Vedder's PJ ballads of late. "Longing to Belong" has been kicking around since 2009, when Vedder debuted it and a bunch of other ukulele tracks during a solo tour. Vedder has long shown an affinity for the tiny tropical guitar, using a ukulele for "Soon Forget" on Pearl Jam's Binaural, and his surfing buddy Kelly Slater reportedly convinced Vedder to devote an album's worth of music to the ukulele.
We emailed Vedder's rep for confirmation but so far no official word yet. The always-reliable Wikipedia, however, is claiming that Uke Songs will arrive May 31st.
