A new commercial for blockbuster video game Gears of War 3 starting airing a few weeks ago that features Mazzy Star's "Into Dust" from 1993's So Tonight That I Might See. A teaser trailer for the game was soundtracked by Sun Kil Moon's "Heron Blue" and in 2006, the original Gears of War was promoted with an ad backed by the Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World." Somebody at Microsoft Game Studios has a good ear for mesmerizing, melancholy ballads.
For some reason folks started to notice the "Dust to Dust" spot this week (perhaps all the fall TV premieres have finally drawn people back to the couch), and the Internet is resoundingly split on Mazzy Star's association with such violent content, even though the very juxtaposition of the sentimental with the grotesque is sort of the point here. "Whoever chose the music for the Gears of War ad campaign is a genius. That Mazzy Star track is amazing and fits so well," tweeted JimmyTruce, while ohnoitsalicia wrote, "Why the eff would they use that beautiful Mazzy Star song on a Gears of War ad.. That's stupid." Debate!
According to MediaBistro, the ad was made by twofifteenmccann and directed by Adam Berg. Watch and try not to get a tiny bit misty-eyed.
