Meet "The Evangelist," the newest member of Gorillaz. It's unclear what instruments he can play, but what we do know is that he has a fishbowl for a head. Damon Albarn's animated outlet recently hosted a contest asking fans to design a new Gorillaz character called "The Evangelist," and after 5,000 drawings and five rounds of voting, fans selected a sketch by "jirouta" to be given the full Gorillaz treatment by animator Jamie Hewlett, which you see above (via Pitchfork). The Evangelist joins Murdoc, 2D, Noodle, and Russel as complete works of fiction that we actually report on like they're real people.
Half of the whole modus operandi surrounding Gorillaz, we often forget, is that it's a visual project for Hewlett, so while Albarn is touring with the flesh-and-blood Gorillaz and recording albums on iPads, Hewlett is hard at work constructing a whole comic universe around the mythology of the Gorillaz' cartoon counterparts, and the band's official website has become almost a cult hub for that whole side of the group.
So while details in the Evangelist back story like "'The Evangelist' is the opposite of 'The Boogieman'; the light to his awful shade" and "Some say that he/she is dressed head to toe in white rhinestoned-leather. Some say he/she rides a glowing white Unicorn" might leave us completely perplexed, we're sure there's fans out there you love this aspect of the Gorillaz as much as we love songs like "Stylo" and "To Binge."
