The first photo of Rihanna making her big-screen debut in Battleship has arrived on the film's Facebook page and it shows the singer gripping a really, really big gun. The 23-year-old musician plays Petty Officer Raikes in the Peter Berg-directed action film, which is based on the popular Hasbro board game ("You sunk my Battleship!") and due in theaters May 18, 2012.
There wasn't too much Rihanna in the film's first trailer (which Yahoo! premiered in late July), though we did get a good sense of the $200 million action thriller's plot -- naval officers on massive ships are surprised by an alien invasion and many weapons are fired. Rihanna mostly nails the "surprise" part in this pic with a look that blends "I'm surprised there are aliens headed my way" with "I'm surprised I am in a Hollywood blockbuster."
What's not surprising? The fact that Rihanna is handling a gun. Firearms have figured prominently in the singer's career since she got a handgun inked her side in 2009 (she added an even bigger gun, a sort of life-size replication, on her thigh a year later). The lead single from her 2009 album Rated R was called "Russian Roulette." During her Last Girl on Earth Tour, she sat on a large pink tank, straddling its machine gun while her dancers handled pink rifles. And the latest hit from her 2010 disc Loud is "Man Down," a response track to Bob Marley's iconic "I Shot the Sheriff" that describes how she shot a guy who'd done her wrong (she plays out the plot in the track's somewhat controversial video, too).
Rihanna may know how to handle a gun onstage, but can she really pull it off onscreen? Commentary on Facebook ranged from the drooly ("she looks hotttttttttttttttttttt") to the wise-cracky ("hahah is chris brown in this movie????") to the somewhat skeptical ("nice, but, what is she doing to that poor minigun?").
