Rihanna's promotional team decided that it was somehow a smart idea to debut her new video for "California King Bed" in the waning moments before Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" hit radio, which all but ensured it would get buried. But if people don't bother watching "California King Bed" on YouTube, the video probably has amazing potential as a mattress commercial. The clip pretty much centers on Rihanna laying around in the titular California King Bed and singing the ballad in various stages of negligee.
That's pretty much all you need to know. The video looks like a Sealy Posturepedic ad that was set in the CGI limbo of The Lovely Bones movie. After a string of dance hits -- "Only Girl (In the World)," "S&M," "What's My Name?" -- it was only a matter of time before Rihanna dropped a ballad from Loud, but we're not sure why she chose the sleep-inducing song with the sleep-inducing title that sounds like Taylor Swift on Ambien and then pair it with a sleep-inducing video. On the bright side, the architecture of the house in the clip is really nice, we'd love to live there. Also, apparently Rihanna hasn't ripped off any photographers this time around.
Let's see how Rihanna's mattress-selling skills compare to the professionals:
