Last week Twitter went into overdrive when Phil Collins said he never planned on making new music again. This was hardly a revelation. "I'm getting near the point where I'm quite happy to write songs and never release them," Collins told Rolling Stone in 2007. "I have this new theory that really the most fun is writing it and recording it, doing it yourself, which is what I do at home, and really the act of putting it out as a record is just a self-gratifying thing that we've gotten used to doing. Usually what happens is I put a record out and I get beaten over the head with it by the critics, and I just think, 'What's the point?'"

The new issue of Rolling Stone - on stands and in the digital archives now - has an exclusive excerpt from Sammy Hagar's new book Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock. In the book Hagar reveals what a mess Eddie Van Halen was when he first met with the guitarist to discuss a reunion tour in 2004. "He finally invited me over to this giant, extravagant house that he and Valerie had built before she split," Hagar writes. "It looked like vampires lived there. There were bottles and cans all over the floor. The handle was broken off the refrigerator door. There were spider webs everywhere."

Eddie also told Hagar how he cured his tongue cancer. "He told me he cured himself by having pieces of his tongue liquified and injected into his body," Hagar wrote. "He also told me when he had his hip replacement, he stayed awake through the operation and helped the doctors drill a hole. What a fruitcake."

Love's unreleased 1973 LP Black Beauty will finally hit shelves on June 7th, according to a statement released by the new label High Moon Records. Produced by Paul Rothchild - who worked on The Doors' first five albums - the R&B-infused album was meant to be the first record by a new line-up of Love three years after frontman Arthur Lee quietly disbanded the Sixties psychedelic band. Lee's record label went bankrupt before the LP was due out and album was shelved.

For the past four decades low-quality bootleg versions of Black Beauty have circulated among Love fans, but this release by High Moon features all 10 songs with remastered sound and bonus tracks. The new edition will come packaged with previously unseen Love photographs and new liner notes by Ben Edmonds.

"Black Beauty might have been received as a strong comeback for Lee, a turn to steamy R&B with heavy-guitar punch - if it had come out," Rolling Stone's David Fricke wrote in a review

Sammy Hagar's new autobiography Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock (in stores on March 15th) traces the singer's long career from his days in the 1970s hard rock band Montrose to his insane ride in Van Halen through the formation of his supergroup Chickenfoot.

The new issue of Rolling Stone (on sale and in the online archive Friday) has an exclusive excerpt focusing on Van Halen's disastrous 2004 reunion tour that was nearly derailed due to Eddie Van Halen's alcoholism. Members of the music industry are calling on Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Usher and 50 Cent to donate to charity the money they had made by performing private gigs for family members of Libyan dictator Muammar el-Qaddafi. So far none of them have commented on the matter, but earlier today Nelly Furtado tweeted that that she played a show for the Qaddafi family four years ago - and she's going to give the money to charity.

Towards the end of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's 2009 world tour, fans noticed that saxophonist Clarence Clemons looked like he was having a rough time. He often sat through much of the show and seemed to have difficulty getting on and off the stage.

"That last tour was hell," Clemons tells Rolling Stone. "Pure hell." In the previous few years before the tour Clemons had his knees and hips replaced, but he was still in a lot of pain - and the constant travel didn't make it easier. "The tour was wonderful musically," he says. "But I knew when it was done that I had to have more surgery."

In the past year Clemons had both knees replaced (again) and spinal fusion surgery. "The timing was perfect because it didn't interfere with a lot of stuff that was going on in my life," he says. "It made me stronger, and for the past year I've been in physical therapy a few days a week working my ass off to get back in shape.

Three weeks ago E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons was putting together an exercise machine in his Florida house when his wife told him that Lady Gaga's people were on the phone. "They said to me, 'Lady Gaga wants you to play on her album,'" Clemons says. "This is on a Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm. I said, 'When do you want me to do it? I'm free Monday or Tuesday.' They go, "No, she needs you RIGHT NOW in New York City." Clemons dropped what he was doing and started driving to the airport. "I almost got a ticket I drove so fast," says Clemons. "It was wild. I was so excited. I'm a Gaga-ite."

Clemons arrived at the Manhattan studio at midnight with his saxophone, not quite sure what to expect. "She came running down the hall," Clemons says. "She was like 'Big Man!' In a stunning blow to metal fans everywhere, Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler has released a statement firmly denying any possibility of a Sabbath reunion. "I would like to make it clear, because of mounting speculation and rumours, that there will be definitely no reunion of all four original members of Black Sabbath," he wrote. Last summer Ozzy Osbourne and Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi "amicably resolved" their lawsuit over the name rights to the band. Just a couple of weeks ago Osbourne told ABC Radio that Black Sabbath were in the "talking process" regarding a new album. "The problem that we have is that if we do an album and it's less than where we left off, it's going to be a big anticlimax," Osbourne said.
