  • Trombone Shorty, Live And Festive!

Post-Katrina and with the rise of the acclaimed TV show Treme, New Orleans has been in the news like never before.

So too has been Trombone Shorty--one of the city's most conspicuous musicians (trombone, trumpet, apparent shortness), and one who between his acclaimed new Verve Forecast album Backatown, onstage appearances with the likes of U2 and this year's appearance on Treme, is in the spotlight in a major way.

Born Troy Andrews 24 years ago, Shorty, like many in New Orleans, grew up in a musical household where both instruments and audible music were never in short supply. That he's so young puts him in an interesting place, musically, as he's as fluent in the world of hip-hop as straight jazz. As he told the Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot recently, "I'd put on the headphones and play solos over the beats of (New Orleans MCs) Mystikal, Master P, Juvenile. I was responding to the rhythmic approach of these guys. Mystikal reminds me of Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, the way he phrases and

  • The Ready Set To Go Places!

There's a growing fanbase out there for Jordan Witzigreuter--who is professionally known as The Ready Set, and whose new album, I'm Alive, I'm Dreaming, is getting noticed in all the right places.

Released on the Decaydance/Sire label, the album--the first under the Ready Set banner--represents the fruition of 20-year-old Witzigreuter's journey as musician. And in these days of bedroom recordings--see also Owl City, etc.--it appears to be a growing trend: Boy meet band. A multi-instrumentalist who play keyboards, drums and sings, he's essentially a solo artist with a touring band of accompanists, but still one with a significant amount of touring under his belt. Among those artists The Ready Set have appeared with are Good Charlotte, Forever the Sickest Kids, Boys Like Girls and Hey Monday, among others.

With their signing to Pete Wentz's label, Decaydance, and plenty of summer exposure coming their way, The Ready Set are clearly ready and set to go, which of course is the point of

  • Two Door Cinema Club: Yeah, That’s The Ticket!

One of this year's brightest and catchiest new albums comes courtesy of Two Door Cinema Club--a young Irish pop group who, with the debut album Tourist History, arrive sounding as if they've been honing their craft for years.

Comprised of Alex Trimble (vocals, guitars), Kevin Baird (bass, vocals), and Sam Halliday (guitar, vocals), the trio--who are joined by a drummer during their live gigs--play a sophisticated blend of layered and percussive rock, anchored by singer Trimble's unique vocals and the precise jangle of Halliday's guitar, which simultaneously evoke the best of '80s-ish Britpop while never sounding less that fresh.

The band's profile is rising in Europe and definitely on the rise here in the States, especially since their recent stint on the Phoenix tour. During that tour, in fact, the band popped into the Y! Music studios and gave an enthusiastically received performance--which you can view here--as well as a surprisingly sharp interview that we thinks shows them to be a

  • MGMT: The ‘Live On Letterman’ Performance

Few would deny that the Congratulations--the most recent album by critically-lauded band MGMT--has been the subject of much discussion since its release.

It's too far out, says one camp. It doesn't sound like the last one, says another. What are they trying to do to their career, asks yet another.

Frankly, we like the way it sounds!

But maybe you'd like a chance to check out MGMT for yourself one more time. And to that end, we've got just the thing. Check out the band's recent Live On Letterman webcast, originally presented by CBS Interactive Music Group on May 11th, and featuring the band in fine form throughout.

  • Christina Aguilera: All Bionic, All The Time!

History may hold that there was really only one Bionic Woman--maybe two, if you count that classic TV show's failed remake--but Christina Aguilera is likely to change that with her new album, which bears the same Bionic Woman title but sounds like nothing that happened in the previous millennium.

With its striking cover illustration, which depicts Aguilera as an apparent android, to the much-viewed video for "Not Myself Tonight," the singer is moving forward artistically on a very conspicuous level. Collaborations with top-level artists abound on the new album, some of them surprisingly esoteric for a singer with such a broad commercial following--including M.I.A., Sia, LeTigre and Peaches, among others.

Aguilera will be all over the place in 2010, not least due to her highly anticipated appearance in Burlesque, a film bowing this fall that will feature her alongside Cher, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci and promises to be an eye-opener.

Y! Music recently had a chance to sit down with

  • Jack Johnson: Live And More Eco-Friendly Than Ever!

It's big news when Jack Johnson releases a new album.

The much-loved singer/songwriter, who releases his new album To The Sea next week, has made a career of being a non-careerist--that is, by simply doing what he does, doing it well, and having a marked distaste for the typical marketing/promo blitz that dogs the efforts of nearly all of his contemporaries.

It's just part of what makes him different.

Perhaps more notably--and absolutely the exception to every rule in the entertainment business-Johnson makes a habit of taking his tour profits and, incredibly, donating them to charity. He did it in 2008 via the establishment of the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, and will do it once again with this year's tour profits. And there will be tour profits aplenty.

To The Sea is a marvelous Jack Johnson album:  Intimately recorded in a near-live format in Johnson's own studio, the record captures the charm and seeming simplicity of the singer's music at its best. But of course "seeming"
