Week Ending Nov. 25, 2012. Songs: Phillip Phillips Is “Home”

Phillip Phillips'

"Home" jumps from #12 to #8 in its 22nd week on the Hot 100. This is its highest ranking to date. The song debuted at #10 in May following Phillips' victory on American Idol. It dropped off the chart after just three weeks, but started showing signs of life again in July. It vaulted from #84 to #9 in August following NBC's use of the song in its coverage of the Summer Olympics. It then started dropping again, falling as far as #27, but has been resurging in recent weeks as radio support spreads.

The song was also boosted by the release of Phillips' debut album, The World From The Side Of The Moon, which enters The Billboard 200 this week at #4.

Rihanna's

"Diamonds" holds at #1 for the second week, while her Unapologetic album enters The Billboard 200 at #1. Rihanna is only the second artist so far this year to top both of these charts simultaneously. Adele scored in February with "Set Fire To The Rain" and her blockbuster album 21. (For what it's worth, the last four artists to top both charts simultaneously are single-name artists. Ke$ha and Eminem preceded Adele and Rihanna.)

"Diamonds" also holds at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the eighth week.

Bruno Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven" holds at #4 for the second week. The song tops 1 million in digital sales this week. It's Mars' ninth million-seller. (His eight top 10 hits have all sold 1 million or more, as has "Marry You.")

PSY's

"Gangnam Style" resurges from #7 to #5 in its 12th week. The song returns to #1 on Hot Digital Songs for a sixth week in the lead. It's the first song to spend six weeks at #1 on the digital sales chart without reaching #1 on the Hot 100 since Miley Cyrus' "Party In The U.S.A." in 2009. "Party In The U.S.A." spent three weeks at #2 on the Hot 100. "Gangnam Style" spent seven weeks at #2.

These are the only two songs to spend six weeks at #1 on Hot Digital Songs without reaching #1 on the Hot 100. (Deep trivia: Hoobastank's 2004 hit "The Reason" spent 10 weeks at #1 on the predecessor Hot Digital Tracks chart without reaching #1 on the Hot 100. It also peaked at #2.)

The resurgence for "Gangnam Style" follows PSY's show-closing performance on the American Music Awards on Nov. 18. Hammer joined in the fun, performing his 1991-1992 hit "2 Legit 2 Quit." (The collabo accounts for about 18% of this week's sales of "Gangnam Style.")

The title stands for either Only Nigga In First Class or One Night In First Class. (Why is it that the clean versions of titles are always kind of lame? You can always tell they were made up after-the-fact.)

Hunter Hayes' "Somebody's Heartbreak" debuts at #100. This is the third Hot 100 hit from Hunter's eponymous debut album. "Wanted" went all the way to #16.

Lee Brice's "Hard To Love," which drops off the chart this week, tops the 1 million mark in digital sales. It's the country singer's third million-seller.

AC/DC

storms the digital charts this week in the wake of the band's belated decision to join the digital revolution. Thirteen songs by the Aussie hard rock band enter the 200-deep Hot Digital Songs chart. (In addition, nine sold enough copies to make the Hot Digital Rock Songs chart but not the all-genre survey.) Nine of the band's albums enter the 200-deep Top Digital Albums chart. I wrote all about in a Chart Watch Extra titled, naturally, For Those About To Download We Salute You.
