  • Asher Roth, Framed

Gather 'round the monitor, everyone, and join us in welcoming rapper Asher Roth to this week's blog. Our video is Roth's oft-hilarious "I Love College," the big hit off his 2009 album, Asleep In The Bread Aisle.

Asher's story isn't the hip-hop norm. He began rhyming in high school and eventually sold tapes of his tracks around Morrisville, PA, where he grew up. Going on to attend West Chester University, he started posting his raps on MySpace. It all led to a manager, a record contract, and incipient stardom.

"Roth's lyrics center around what has been called 'middle-class minutiae,'" says the Internet. That, as well as the smoke and the drink...which could also be classified as middle-class minutiae, we guess. In any case, it's all good fun, and pretty damn catchy. So please enjoy, and tell us what you think!

Important blog note! It's once again time to look back at your posts over the last couple of months and respond in the thoughtful manner that sets Framed apart from all the

  • Paris Hilton, Framed

Until we started writing this week's Framed, we had no idea that Paris Hilton's first album, Paris, hit #6 on the U.S. Billboard chart in 2006. #6! She must be the most talented whatever-she-is in the whole world!

Of course, we're quite happy for her chart success, 'cause our video this week is the second single from that LP, "Nothing In This World." You probably know that Paris is also a very successful actress--we really enjoyed that one hamburger commercial she did--so it's no surprise that the ambitious Ms. Hilton brought her well-known cinematic and satiric chops to this video project.

The video is based on the 2004 movie, The Girl Next Door, a teen comedy about a high school boy falling in love with the porno start next door. In fact, Elisha Cuthbert, the star of Girl Next Door, has a cameo in the video. Paris, of course, fits comfortably into the porno star role.

Is Paris Hilton our most multi-talented multi-talented star? Only you, the readers of Framed, can decide that, so

  • Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, Framed

Soulja Boy Tell 'Em--DeAndre Way--has been a controversialfigure since he burst on the national scene. A self-created star, he recordedhis monstrous "Crank That" at the age of 16, and it hit #1 onBillboard shortly after he turned 17.

The naysayers were soon out in full force. EntertainmentWeekly declared its album, souljaboytellem.com, the worst LP of2007. Ice-T said Soulja was "killing hip-hop." Others referred toSoulja as "the Terri Schiavo of hip-hop."

Framed, of course, is sensationally fair anddemocratic; thus, we're pleased to present Soulja's "Bird Walk" asour video this week. The song is off his second album, iSouljaBoyTellEm,which hasn't fared as well on the charts as his first disc. Still, we'recurious as to how our readers see Soulja Boy. Does his dance-styled rap spell thedeath of relevant hip-hop? Or is it merely a case of the old guard beingreluctant to give up their place in the sun? Please let us know yourthoughts...Soulja Boy: ringtone god or not?!

Who's Big Daddy Weave, and just why are they being framed?

A word of explanation: Framed is a weekly blogavailable to the great readers of Y! Music. This is our 79th installment and we're glad you're looking in.

What we do is watch a music video incredibly carefully, drink some, and then stop the video at key moments. These still frames are postedevery week...but wait, there's an exciting twist! We also write captionsto the pictures we freeze. Invariably, these captions offer delightful socialor pop cultural commentary that has the whole country asking, "Hey, neighbor...didyou read Framed this week?"

Yes, everyone likes our captions. It's great!

This week our stars are Big Daddy Weave, a Christian combo whosound like a more acoustic Steven Curtis Chapman, MercyMe, and Casting Crowns, with just a smidge of Dave Matthews Band, according to something we stole offthe internet that sounds quite plausible.

In their video, "What Life Would Be Like," BDW findthemselves in Ecuadoron a mission to

  • Pussycat Dolls, Framed

Few musical acts have resumes as varied as that of the Pussycat Dolls. In addition to a "Stardoll" website, where kids can create their own Pussycat Doll ("Aimed at girls aged seven to 17")...and the Pussycat Dolls Lounge in Las Vegas ("Sin City's sexiest spot!")...and a reality TV show on the CW network ("Canceled due to low ratings")...well, in addition to all of that and more, the PCD are also a real, live recording group. You know, sort of.

Naysayers claim the PCD are, in reality, little more than lead singer Nicole Scherzinger and some great marketing. At Framed, of course, our focus is on music videos, so we really don't want to say too much about the music itself. Other than, whenever you get a bunch of really hot girls to dress and pose suggestively: well, heck, that's a song in itself.

    'Nuff said!

Our video this week is "I Hate This Part," from PCD's recent Doll Domination album. It shows Nicole pretending to play the piano while the rest of the PCD troupe looks good in

  • Flobots, Framed

Welcome back to Framed, everybody, where the excitement is palpable! This week's guests are Denver's own Flobots, one of the most innovative bands of the last decade.

Flobots are an alternative hip-hop ensemble of community organizers who've released one LP--Fight With Tools--and two great singles, "Handlebars" and this week's featured video, "Rise."  (We urge you to check out "Handlebars" on Y! Music, too. It was tough to choose between the two.)

"Rise" offers an interesting vision of America, showing citizens actively helping other citizens, interlaced with shots of the band in concert and accompanied by a strong pro-peace message. It's evidently based on a Sean Hannity wet dream.

We kid! But with President-Elect Obama's inauguration just days away, we thought it was all, somehow, apt. We're interested in what you think of Flobots and "Rise," and look forward to reading your excellent posts!

  • U2, Framed

Welcome again to 2009, readers! Even though we brought in the new year last week, we'd like to punctuate the festivities by offering U2's classic "New Year's Day" this week.

U2, as everyone knows, is the greatest band that's ever been. They've won more Grammys--22!--than any other artist, and are widely known as the greatest humanitarians in music history. Bono is the only person ever to have been nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Grammy, and the Nobel Peace Prize. Plus, he's only got the one name.

"New Year's Day" has an interesting place in the band's history: it was their first big hit, way back in 1983. Although it only made it to #53 in the US, it hit #10 in the UK and paved the way for the many successes that would follow. The video--shot in the Swedish winter, for some reason--cuts between the band, who are clearly frozen out of their minds, and black-and-white shots of some of the many wars of the 20th century. It's pretty good!

The real message of the song, of

  • Jason Mraz, Framed

Well, readers, 2008 was one heckuva year. Between the aliens landing in Kansas, George Bush launching a preemptive war against Greenland, and Framed winning another Pulitzer, things were sure hectic! And that's not even to mention Simon Cowell's stunning revelation that American Idol 's been fixed since day one!

Can 2009 be even better? Perhaps! After President-Elect Palin takes the oath of office and follows through on her campaign promise to personally hunt down and kill the last living wolf, we expect she'll turn her attention to wisely investing the massive budget surplus she's inherited. Good times are here again!

To help usher in the new year we're featuring Jason Mraz's Grammy-nominated single, "I'm Yours." Mraz is a gifted singer-songwriter from Virginia whose reggae-flavored tune was the big hit off his 2008 LP, We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things., which hit #3 on Billboard this year. The song is now nominated for Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal

  • Rascal Flatts, Framed

Getting into Framed more than once isn't easy. To date, the only ones to do it have been Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Miley Cyrus, Daughtry and Britney Spears, and they're probably the most talented people on Earth, along with Framed. And now, this week--surprisingly!--Rascal Flatts joins this heady group.

We'd like to say that it's because RF makes videos that are so compelling that we simply have no choice in the matter. But that would be ridiculous and no one would believe us.

No, the real reason is that we were looking at various Christmas-themed videos and, when we heard their version of "I'll Be Home For Christmas," decided that its seasonal excellence needed to be shared. The song appears on their latest album, Greatest Hits Vol. 1, and, rendered a capella, delivers the sense of wistfulness inherent in the Christmas classic. The video itself, shot at New York City's Roosevelt Hotel in November, is as straightforward as the song, and also evocative of the warmth of the

We've had a lotof great stars in Framed, but perhapsnone greater than this week's guests, the Bee Gees. The 'Gees--brothersMaurice, Robin and Barry Gibb--are one of the best-selling bands in history, and true superstars. This week's video, "Stayin' Alive," one of theirbest known songs, is from the monstrous SaturdayNight Fever album, which pretty much defined the disco era of the late'70s.

Readers havegrown accustomed to our expert video analysis, and we'll pull no punches insaying that this video is uniformly dreadful. Despite the greatness of the'Gees, no one had really over thought rock video back in 1977. The idea ofhaving the brothers Gibb stroll through a bombed-out landscape--while certainlycharming!--had absolutely nothing to do with the song itself. In fact, the setfor "Stayin' Alive" was next door to the set where the 'Gees werefilming the even-more-horrible Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie. To top it off, the primitivepicture quality of the video reminds us why we
