  • Elliott Yamin, Framed

When we first started this blog, we vowed to cover all the American Idol contestants, since they're pretty much uniformly great. We've done a respectable job so far, having featured Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, Kelly Clarkson, and that country girl a few weeks back. And this week we're highlighting Elliot Yamin, who, in season five, actually beat out rock god/bologna salesman Daughtry.

Everyone knows that Elliott is a vocalist of extraordinary gifts, and you'll agree after watching the video for "Wait For You," the second single off his debut album.  But how many know that he's also a skilled songwriter? It's true: he signed an always-lucrative songwriting deal with Sony! "What the music business needs is good, soulful music," Yamin has said.  "I give the people what they want."

Indeed he does!  And, this week, Elliott will be giving our readers guidelines on how to write a great song. That's right... he'll actually give you easy-to-follow instructions on how to turn your innermost

  • Frank Sinatra, Framed

Frank Sinatra is one of the greatest singers of all time, and the first real pop music superstar. A larger-than-life figure, Sinatra came up during the Big Band Era with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey bands; by the mid-1940s, his appearances were causing riots. In the 1950s, after a decline, he recast his career with a string of legendary releases on Capitol Records, an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in From Here To Eternity, and by becoming a mainstay on the Vegas strip.

This week's video, "High Hopes," is not at all typical of the moody saloon singer. The novelty song is from a 1959 movie, A Hole In The Head, and it won the Oscar for Best Original Song that year. A delightfully corny and optimistic tune, Sinatra sang it with a children's chorus, and it's still a part of pop culture today.

So please enjoy this look back at a simpler time, and one of America's greatest vocal talents, and, as always, let us know what you think.

  • Carrie Underwood, Framed

This week, we're happy to welcome Carrie Underwood, and her brand new video, "All-American Girl," to Framed.

Carrie is arguably the most successful American Idol of all time--her debut album, Some Hearts, went platinum seven times over, and her latest disc, Carnival Ride, has already sold over two million. "All-American Girl" is from the new LP and actually began charting before it was released! Almost as if it had traveled through time!

Happily, Carrie has agreed to use her moment in the Framed sun to help inspire the young girls in her audience to get a good education and build a fulfilling career. It's a great cause, and one we're glad to be part of!  So listen up, young ladies, and set your sights on the stars!

1 - "Hi, readers! As a public service, Framed and I have gotten together to show my many young female fans their limitless job opportunities! Please allow me to paint a bright picture!"

2 - "A career helping others in medicine can be yours as a candy striper or an aide!

We have a real treat for you this week, readers. We're going to take you inside the recording studio to get a look at OneRepublic, the up-and-coming Colorado quintet who've made a huge splash with their hit single, "Apologize." That's right... you'll be there to see what really went down when the tape was rolling.

    Yep, we're just that good.

OneRepublic, much like our good friend Colbie Caillat, got things going on MySpace, where they've been huge for over a year now. After a brief stint at Columbia Records, they moved over to Interscope, where they released their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, last November. "Apologize" is featured on that album, but hit #1 in the form of a Timbaland remix that appeared on his Shock Value record.

Things are going great for the guys, and we're way happy to do our part by taking you to ground zero, as it were, for the inside story. So please feel free to post often letting us know what you think. See you next week!

  • Birdman, Framed

After the excellent reception to last week's Alan Jackson blog, we were strongly considering making Framed a country music-only affair. But, upon reflection, we decided it would be unfair to deny fans of other music forms of this most beloved of formats. That's why we're widely known as The Blog That Likes You!

Getting as far away from country as we can, then, it was 17 years ago that Birdman--aka Bryan "Baby" Williams--founded Cash Money Records in New Orleans. After signing a distribution deal with Universal Records in 1998, the label took off, especially with the Hot Boys, who featured Lil Wayne. And when Juvenile and B.G. of the Boys split amid accusations of money mismanagement, the label barely blinked, financially, as the Big Tymers picked up the slack and CEO Williams established his in-studio credentials, too, as Birdman.

This week's video is Birdman's latest, "100 Million Dollars," which features not only Williams but much of his Cash Money posse as well. In the guise of an

If you like old school country music, you may be a fan of Alan Jackson. The Georgia native released his first album in 1990, and has sold over 40 million records and scored 30 #1 country hits since. He's won countless industry awards and, recently, the smooth-voiced star was nominated for a 2008 Grammy for best male country vocal performance for last year's "A Woman's Love."

Our video this week is Jackson's latest, "Small Town Southern Man," released as a single last year and slated to appear on his pending Good Time album. It tells the story of a regular Joe who believes in the values of family, faith and tradition, like many in Jackson's audience.  We're sure that--like us!--you'll find it to be uplifting as all git-out... so enjoy, and please let us know what you think!

  • Ashlee Simpson, Framed

Ashlee Simpson hit the big time back in 2004 when her debut album, Autobiography, entered the charts at #1. Since then, the multi-talented singer/actress has seen her share of controversy, especially during the much-discussed Saturday Night Live episode where she appeared to be using a taped vocal track instead of singing live. It turned out, of course, that the ebullient Ashlee had a bad case of acid reflux and had lost her voice, but her critics had a field day. Then, a few months later, she was booed by cold-hearted fans at the Orange Bowl when she performed at halftime.

Despite all that, Ashlee has carried on, and now she's back with her third album, Bittersweet World. It features a great new song, "Out Of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" that we're happy to have as this week's Framed.  So call the family around to enjoy one of the strangest videos we've seen in awhile, as Framed, as always, brings you the little-known inside story.

  • Kanye West, Framed

Hello, again, readers, and welcome back to Framed... The Blog That Likes You. We don't want to get too far into 2008 without recognizing a man who was perhaps last year's pre-eminent artist: Kanye West.

Last September, Kanye released his third album, Graduation, the same day that 50 Cent released his latest, Curtis, and country star Kenny Chesney released Just Who I Am: Poets And Pirates.  And, although this blog featured both 50 and Kenny in short order, we somehow overlooked Kanye, whose album was easily the best-selling of the three.

It's gnawed at us ever since, so we've decided to make amends by kicking off the year with Kanye's exceptional '04 video, "Jesus Walks."  There were actually three different versions of this video, but we're sticking with the one that was widely seen on MTV.

Compellingly, the video shows how faith can redeem even the lowest among us.  All three of the videos for "Jesus Walks" were regarded as controversial when released, but we'll let you be the judge.

Do you know why yawning is contagious?  Here's why: a million years ago, or more, there was far less oxygen in the atmosphere than there is today. The primates who would eventually become Homo Sapiens were scattered thinly across Africa because the low levels of oxygen would support only a few of these large, complex mammals. When one of these proto-men "yawned," it was a signal to his fellows that their neighbor was trying to secure more than his fair share of the precious resource, so "contagious yawning" developed as a defense mechanism. Just then, a giant, oxygen-rich meteor named Oxxyjo crashed into the Bering Straits, releasing an estimated 86 duodecillion metric tons of oxygen into Earth's atmosphere, rendering contagious yawning forevermore unnecessary. But it had already become part of the human-to-be genome, and the mechanism remains part of our heritage even today.

This is our way of introducing this week's video, Korn's excellent "Evolution."  It'll all tie in, you'll see.

Few bands or artists ever write an enduring Christmas song, but the Britpop duo Wham! managed it back in 1984, with "Last Christmas," a tune that is still being played seasonally.

The video to "Last Christmas" echoes the lyrics: George Michael had his heart broken. A Christmas later, we find him recovering at a ski chalet, when--incredibly, perhaps!--his ex turns up on the arm of fellow Whamster Andrew Ridgeley! Excruciatingly, frame by frame, we see George and his ex try to deal with the whole busted romance. Hilarity ensues.

It's a Christmas classic, indeed, and we're pleased to make it our choice for this week, as we all look forward to celebrating the season with friends and family. Our holiday best to all of our readers!

Important blog news! Well, we certainly took a smackdown from a bunch of you over our Casting Crowns blog a few weeks back. Many were upset, feeling that we'd mocked the band and/or their religion. A few of the best comments:

    "Y is Christianity so attacked???
