In 1976--the bicentennial year of the United States--America and the world were rockin'! Alex Haley's book, Roots, was riveting the nation. A one-term governor from the south, Jimmy Carter, defeated Gerald Ford in the presidential election. On Tuesday nights, families gathered around the TV set to watch America's favorite show, Happy Days.

And a pop/rock group from Sweden, ABBA, was topping the charts.

It was a heady time. ABBA, who would go on to sell almost 400 million records, was a worldwide phenomenon. In the wake of hits like "Waterloo," "Mamma Mia" and "Fernando," the photogenic foursome were poised to release their first #1 single in the U.S.--the amazing "Dancing Queen."

Like their previous hits, "Dancing Queen" was impossibly hooky and altogether infectious, and it did indeed hit the top of the charts in the States. This week, we've decided to feature the video here in Framed, and--in what we can only describe as an amazing journalistic coup--have actually solicited comments

  • Jordin Sparks, Framed

Have you ever wondered what life is like for an American Idol? We sure have. After what must be an almost unbearable pressure cooker (the show itself), the Idol, universally agreed to be America's greatest singing talent, has to record and release a best-selling album and, then--on top of that!--has to tour to support his or her product. What a unique, unknowable experience it must be for a young singer!

Well, now, thanks to the magic that is Framed, you and your friends will be able to share what appear to be the innermost thoughts of our current American Idol, Jordin Sparks. Jordin has just released her first album and the video we're looking at is for "Tattoo," her first single.  And, amazingly, Jordin Sparks herself will walk you through the video, giving you unprecedented insight into the world of American Idolhood!

It's the kind of service we like providing our readers, and probably the reason everyone is talking 'bout Framed. You will be, too, and--if you're of a mind--feel free

  • Casting Crowns, Framed

Hello again, readers, and welcome to Framed... The Blog That Likes You.

Here at Framed we are unafraid to take on all types of music, keeping the best interests of our valued readership above even our own likes and dislikes. In that sense, we're sort of like the cigarette-smoking newsmen of World War II who actually won the war, killed Hitler, and gave away half of Europe to the Reds.

But we digress. This week we'll be looking at the popular Christian rock band Casting Crowns, the light rockers out of Georgia who have made a big splash in the highly competitive world of popular religious music. In case you missed it, the Crowns were named "Favorite Artist" in the Contemporary Inspirational category at November's American Music Awards. It was another feather in their crown of thorns, having won a Grammy in 2006 for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.

In this week's video, "Does Anybody Hear Her" from their Lifesong LP, the Crowns tell the story of a young woman who is lost in today's

  • The Beatles, Framed

The Beatles' second movie, Help!, has just been released as a digitally remastered, expanded DVD, and we find it apt to salute the Fab Four right here in Framed.  In many ways, the Beatles' movies set the tone for what would become music video... certainly, A Hard Day's Night and Help! were the inspiration for the Monkees' TV show, which, in turn, became a template of sorts for music video when MTV hit.

Our video, "I Need You"--only the second George Harrison composition the Beatles ever recorded--is culled from the new DVD, and it features the spectacularly popular band performing out in a field somewhere, with army maneuvers going on all around them.  It's all very wacky, but very Beatlesque, somehow.

As always, we invite your comments.  Please enjoy this charming Beatles video as well as the still pictures we have very thoughtfully pulled for your enjoyment.

1 - The Beatles weren't actually better than other bands, but they did have way bigger equipment.

    2 - Wow!  There really

  • High School Musical 2, Framed

One of the biggest musical events of the year was High School Musical 2, Disney's sequel to High School Musical. How a significant part of commercial pop music came to be directed at young teens and pre-teens is a subject for another blog, someone else's blog--we're only in this for the stills we can pull from the video.  Well, those and the hard liquor.

But quite a peppy video it is!  It features Zac Efrin, Vanessa Hudgens and Olesya Rulin--you may know them better as Troy, Gabriella, and Kelsi--performing "You Are The Music In Me," but saying, basically, "Hey, kids, let's put on a show!" You know, something like the Beatles used to do back in the old days.  While the song itself is so innocuous as to be evil, the video--the real point of this exercise--is the sort of charming romp that plays well with the kids, God bless 'em.

So we're happy to present High School Musical 2 as this week's Framed. As always, we welcome your comments--we pore over all of them studiously and actually

  • Colbie Caillat, Framed

Cute-as-a-button Colbie Caillat is a new kind of rising music star--she really made her name on the internet, especially through Myspace. Unsigned by any record label for months, her Myspace page generated millions of plays as, through word-of-mouth, she became a huge internet favorite. And when her debut album, Coco, was released, it hit #5 on the Billboard charts in its first week. It's quite a story.

Our featured video this week, then, is "Bubbly," one of the hottest songs off Coco. We predict it'll end up in a TV ad any minute now--seriously, the song is an Ambien commercial just waiting to happen--but the video itself does a great job of featuring Colbie's sunny, girl-next-door disposition and easygoing musical charm.

If our captions this week seem strange and dissonant to Colbie's myriad fans, please remember that Framed is a blog meant to inform and entertain, and also that we're pretty drunk right now.

OK?  Ladies and gentlemen, Colbie Caillat!

1 - Come on in, readers...

  • Akon, Framed

Akon, one of the hottest R&B singers of the millennium, has seen some trouble lately. It all stems from an incident in the tiny Caribbean country of Trinidad & Tobago, where--at an 18-and-over club--he brought a girl onstage and engaged her in some raunchy dancing. When it was discovered that the girl was only 14 years old, the scandal was on, and Akon was attacked from many quarters. Notable was the vitriol of Fox News clowns Michelle Malkin and Bill O'Reilly, with O'Reilly referring to the singer as "Acorn."

Who's lookin' out for you, Akon?

In response to all this, the American-Senegalese singer has responded with his latest single, "Sorry, Blame It On Me," in which he "Takes this time out to apologize for things that I've done, things that haven't occurred yet and things that they don't want to take responsibility for." Yep, it's a pretty damned broad apology! And also surprisingly detailed, as when Akon sings "I'm sorry that it took so long to speak/But I was on tour with Gwen

  • Evanescence, Framed

If you want to find great music videos, Y! Music is the place to go!  We were sitting around one night last week, reading all the great blogs here, when we noticed this at the top of the page:

Good Enough?  Actually, Evanescence's new video is GREAT!

Wow! It was almost like Y! Music had come alive and was taking us by the hand, directing us to the next installment of Framed.  Moreover, it was a clever play on words, because the name of the song in the video is... hold on, now, you're gonna love this... "Good Enough!"

I tell you, you couldn't write this stuff.  Not unless you work for Y! Music!  Which we do!

Anyway, we took the bait and checked out the new vid, and it's every bit as good as promised.  It's the new single from their '06 album, The Open Door, and, even though chanteuse Amy Lee is the only member of the band actually in the video, it's still great.  Things start melting, then bursting into flame, while Amy plays the piano... basically, it's like humanity's collective dream

  • Eddie Vedder, Framed

When we heard that Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam's sensational singer, had a new video out, we told the team to slip that baby into Framed rotation right away. We're pretty heavy into cultural icons around here.

But imagine our surprise when we found out that Eddie doesn't actually appear in the video! It turns out that it's a song from the new, Sean Penn-directed film, Into The Wild, for which Eddie wrote most of the songs, and even played most of the instruments himself. Well, we were a little chagrined, and we yelled at our new Sri Lankan crew (Llewellyn, Warren and Cindy) for not telling us this was really a movie video instead of a music video.  But we don't speak much Sri Lankan, and they don't speak much English, so there you go.

With deadline looming, we've decided to go with it, since the excellent captions were already written. And we have read the book the movie is based on, and it was great, so maybe the movie is great, too.  In fact, we're sure it is.

    So please enjoy this

  • Duran Duran, Framed

Here at "Framed" we have a lot of fun with music videos, but this week we'd like to return to a simpler time.  Perhaps a happier and more naïve time.

A time when Duran Duran was really popular.

It all happened back in the 1980s, when the artform of music video was nascent.  MTV had started up and they were feeding not only rock music, but rock imagery, to the world's youth.  This had never happened before, and it would change everything.  Except for, you know, death and such.  But a lot of stuff, nonetheless.

The darlings of MTV were a British quintet called Duran Duran, who were as photogenic as they were easy to take pictures of.  The Duranies' brand of danceable pop swept the world and their videos became the mainstays of MTV.  People talked about them everywhere, and their well-produced videos set a standard that exists today.

So this week we'll look at one of their greatest videos--the one for their 1982 hit tune "Rio"--and salute these pioneers of a type of art we completely
