Samsung Still Believes In A Thing Called The Darkness

The Darkness are back! When it was announced last year that unitarded hair-metal revivalists the Darkness had reunited, rockers everywhere rejoiced. And that air-guitaring-in-the-streets, celebratory spirit has now carried over to THE feelgood Super Bowl commercial of 2012, a 90-second Samsung spot starring the Darkness themselves, in all their catsuit-flaunting, flying-V-wielding, hair-flipping glory. And judging by the crowd reaction here, apparently a lot of fans still believe in a thing called the Darkness.

Nope, Sir Justin Hawkins sure didn't phone in that Samsung performance, did he?

The reunited Darkness are currently touring the U.S., and if this star turn is any indication of how they still rock onstage, my guess is every audience will be a virtual sea of illuminated cell phones, of every make and model. Within a couple hours of this commercial airing, "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" jumped to number 44 on the iTunes chart.

Welcome back, Darkness. You've been dearly, dearly missed.

Why does everyone think The darkness is an 80s throwback band?? If they are influenced by classic rock then it is the 70s! Thin Lizzy, Queen and the like. Dan Hawkins wears Thin Lizzy shirts on stage, as a matter of fact. Just because there is spandex involved doesn't mean 80s, or didn't Justin's bellbottoms in the commercial signal the era?
      • eric 3 months ago
Because they emulate an 80s hair band more than they do a 70s band. The points you make are razor thin. Many musicians have been influenced by the same bands, yet migrate to different genres of music, so clearly, the influence doesn't specifically define any given musician or band. So Hawkins wears a Thin Lizzy shirt. I played in a local metal band in the early 90s and often wore a Doors shirt, does that mean that I really wasn't in a metal band, but actually in a 60s/70s throwback band? You are right about the spandex alone not meaning 80s, but then you come back with the bell bottoms statement which basically contradicts the spandex statement, as the wearing of bell bottoms doesn't have to mean 60s or 70s, especially when you consider its a Samsung commercial and they could have provided the wardrobe.

Who gives a #$%$ They're still the worst band ever with the worst song ever!

Everyone knew they were playing up the over the top image and campy style as a joke. It was the 90's and NO ONE else was doing it. You would laugh watching their cheesy videos and still appreciate the singer's high notes.

Another ignorant opinion. If it was "better" then why is Madonna selling more records after the Super Bowl than The Darkness. In fact, she's ALWAYS sold more records, but I'm sure you'll come up with whiny excuses instead of admitting the truth.

Tarue, that's like saying that because Justin Bieber sold more albums than Madonna then that would make Justin Bieber better than Madona. Just because it's what the majority likes doesn't always make it better. Plus, saying that something is "better" or "worse" is just an opinion.

Where are all you Darkness lovers when I wear my Darkness shirt in public and everyone wants to kill me? Lol. I actually had Dream Theater's manager wanting to throw me out of a meet-and-greet because I was wearing it. People need to lighten up.

I thought the Darkness broke up shortly after this song became a hit a few years ago... because of the lead singer's drug problems... welcome back though! I loved that song.
