The Aftermath Presents: Dee-1′s Top 3 Rappers With Legacies

    Follow Billy on Facebook, Twitter.
    Follow Soren on Amazon, Twitter.

Fast-rising New Orleans rapper Dee-1 stopped by Yahoo! to knock out a top 3 list with Soren Baker and me for The Aftermath Presents. The "Jay 50 Weezy" MC based his list on the Top 3 Rappers With Legacies.

I don't think anyone can argue with his selections that include Chuck D, Will Smith, and Master P.

Dee-1Dee-1 said he considers Chuck D one of the most influential rappers because he is "bold in his message and his music." He credited Will Smith, the former DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince rapper, for successfully making a transition from hip-hop to Hollywood, saying, "He's one of the few black actors who can make a phone call and make a movie happen." And being from Louisiana, Dee-1 said he had a personal connection with Master P. "What he did for New Orleans hip-hop and the whole No Limit movement is it gave us an identity nationwide," he said. Check out the discussion.

Additionally, Dee-1 is making moves outside of music. The political activist has been helping promote voting. While in Los Angeles he visited the New Millennium barbershop for a Barack Talk 2012 segment, an effort in conjunction with the League Of Young Voters, Rock The Vote, and Allhiphop.com.

Legacies: Will Smith, Eminem, LL Cool J or Run DMC - Will Smith bridged the gap for mainstream hip hop and cross over to TV and film, now his kids are doing it. Eminem is the greatest lyricist in history, who's subject matter and artist crossovers are monumental (Dido, Elton John, etc) and LL Cool J brought hip hop and mainstream communities together for 3 decades starting with I Need Love after Radio and Rock the Bells rocked the rap community legitimately and Run DMC was a front runner to cross over rap, rock and pop and entering movies along with the Fat Boys as the first rappers to make movies. Their legacies are solid and have advanced hip hop beyond measure to ensure that it competes with Rock & Roll forever.

Dee-1 is obivous young and knows nothing about rap, the true culture of rap or music. He needs to expand his mind, and music listening skills. Two of the peple he picked, wack as Master P and Will Smith, pleaseee. Where has this guy been? Now Master P did influence a lot of Southern Rapper's and that's great. Music has to evolve , grow and move. He aint the best Rapper and he never will be. I bet Mr. Dee-1 does not know about any old school Rappers. They were conscious. They were not violent and they are the one's who should be in the top 3. Chuck D, may in the top 5.

Sorry Will Smith was wack as a rapper. Sure Summer Time was a good songb but he's no rapper. He should not be in the top 3 for rappers. If anything he should be in the top 400.

if you've never heard of Chuck D, you need a Hip Hop History class lol.

one day some budding emcee is gonna say the same nice things about Dee-1 .. he's truly one of the leaders of the new school (no pun intended).

Will Smith, Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, and Lil' Wayne all werked against the Grain and Made it. Chuck D would Rap and has Rapped for the fun of it (free) and is O.G. at Rap. Master P is one of the best Rappers of all time (#1).

Eminem has the talent to make his rap flow as though he was just talking and somehow the words just magically rhyme with absolutely no effort. But he sadly lacks the legacy that will smith has. Insane clown posse has a ravenous fan base that would kill for them and they have stretched out into movies, comics, ther own record label, and clothing lines. Ther music never went main stream though. Now Ice Cube was high up the food chain in NWA and transitioned to acting, directing and producing. He made a total 360 from gangster rap to disney movies . He has a pretty large legacy and is still going I would have put him on that list.

Althought not my top 3 choices the reasons why he picked them made total sense. That's why I loved him so much...he's always thinking. I hope he is able to surpass his idols one day. Love you Dee-1
