  • The Grammy's isn't over yet, but I just watched my favoritepart, the performance of T.I.'s "Swagga Like Us" featuring Kanye West, Jay-Z,Lil' Wayne and the pregnant M.I.A.

"Swagga Like Us" is my favorite song of 2008 and from themoment I heard it I thought it was a great idea to pull the "swagga like us"sample from M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes." M.I.A.'s high-pitched melodic voice, themilitaristic track and rhymes from four of hip-hop's biggest MCs had no chanceof failing.

How appropriate to have the former rapper turnedOscar-nominated actress Queen Latifah introduce the performance and dub themthe Rap Pack, a fitting comparison to the Rat Pack.

Shown through black and white lenses, the set opens with apregnant M.I.A., whose due date is actually today, dressed in arguably the mostinappropriate outfit a performing pregnant mother could ever wear-a black sheerbodysuit with polka dot circles covering her chest, belly and backside. Onegood verse into her hit "Paper Planes" the curtains behind her

  • It's safe to assume that Beyoncé's portrayal of Etta James in the retro film Cadillac Records did not impress the legendary soul singer.

The 71-year-old pioneer, who rose to fame in 1950s, recently made it clear that she was not a fan of the self-proclaimed diva whose third solo album I Am...Sasha Fierce is the #3 album in the country.

Before performing "At Last" at Seattle's Paramount Theatre last Wednesday, James complained about Beyoncé' singing the song for President Obama and wife Michelle's first dance at the Neighborhood Ball.

"You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she's going to get her a-- whipped," Etta said to a thunderous applause. She went on to add that she could not "stand" Beyoncé'.

Some dismiss James' anger as jealously, saying that she is only upset because she was not invited to perform the song herself.

However, James' anger warrants the asking of a few key questions:

Did anyone from Obama or Beyoncé''s camps contact James beforehand to seek her

  • I haven't watched Survivorin years, but I'll be watching it this season. A member of one of my favorite1990s female R&B groups is a cast member. Tamara "Taj" Johnson-George tooka hiatus from touring with SWV (Sisters With Voices) to tape Season 18 of thereality show with a $1 million prize.

I was shocked when I read a blog post about Taj being a castmember and wasn't sure what to think. I saw SWV on tour with Bobby Brown, EnVogue and Bell Biv DeVoe a couple summers ago and was disappointed that Taj,Coko and Lelee were moving around like old ladies on the stage. Five minutesinto that 20 minute set at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, Lelee kicked her shoes off andjoked that "things weren't the same." It was clear that she was referring toher energy level.

So I wondered is Taj going to be able to hang with all ofthe robust physical activities that the jungle excursion demands.

  • Join me in this Jerry Springer-like chant:

    Kelly!

    Kelly!

    Kelly!

Jawn Murray, MediaTakeOut, AP are all reporting that KellyRowland has exited the building headed by Beyonce's dad Matthew Knowles.

I've long wondered if Destiny's Child members Kelly or Michelle would ever seeksomeone other than Matthew Knowles to oversee their solo careers? Gossipcolumnists and bloggers have suggested that if Kelly or Michelle ever severedtheir management ties with Poppa Knowles that it would be considered careersuicide.

That appeared to be the case for original Destiny's Childmembers LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson who were dismissed from the group whenthey insisted upon having more input in their young careers.

Fortunately, the Rowland and Knowles split appears to bedrama free. I contacted both of their representatives for a copy of theirofficial statements. Kelly's publicist Simone Smalls sent me the comments from both, definitely a sign that the parties want to make it clear thatthey are not

  • What's the purpose of writing adiss rap about someone who is not going to reply?

A good diss record is supposedto spark a feud. It is supposed to evoke a response record that couldpotentially outshine the instigating track. It should prompt fans of eitherside or even the unbiased to keep a tally of lyrical jabs and hooks. This willhelp listeners support their argument their winner.

A great diss experience canforever be debated.

I'm sorry 50, but this is notthe kind of experience you are going to get with Kanye.

Kanye did not have much to saywhen you had the album release week battle in 2007, despite your claim toretire if he outsold you. And he is refusing to record a response to your song"Heartless Monster."

Not only has Kanye not respondedto "Heartless Monster," clearly a dark parody of Kanye's "Heartless," hisreaction to 50's sucker punch is actually sad.

Kanye recently likened 50'sinsults to a celebrity spitting on a child fan's face. In an interview withBossip.com Kanye

  • The video for Busta Rhymes' "Arab Money" is now officiallyavailable online.

Yes, I know it's been on BET and YouTube for months.

Of course the BET version was always official. The other, not so much.

I raise this point because when I contacted UniversalRecords in November to get a copy of the video for Yahoo! Music, Busta was inthe midst of controversy over the song which offended Muslims in the US and UKfor misrepresenting the Middle Eastern culture, mixing sacred verses from the HolyQuran with secular hip-hop beats and rhetoric. I was told that the video was notbeing serviced at the time.

Over the last month, blogs addressed the controversy andBusta was even quoted in a few, expressing his sincere apology to those heoffended.

There was so much outrage in the UK that popular Galaxy FM DJ Steve"Smooth" Sutherland was suspended after listeners complained about him playingthe song.

A Dubai-based rapper Narcicyst got Busta's attention when hereleased his explosive response record "Real

  • Excuse me while I have a Christina Milian moment.

I saw Christina's new video, "Us Against The World," the other day and would just like to say thank you to her parents for blessing those of us with sight the fortunate opportunity to rest our eyes on her.

I want to thank Theda Sandiford for getting me a phone interview with Christina in 2001 or so as Miss Milian was preparing to release her first record for Island Def Jam. Even though her cheesy "AM To PM" never had a chance at making it big, I still wanted her to win.

She's so dag on cute and sweet and had the perfect resume, having a background in acting (was even a band geek in American Pie), opened up for other then teen pop stars Britney and N'Sync, had written songs for J. Lo, and already had a young Hollywood boyfriend in Nick Cannon. I knew she was gonna blow up.

Even though Island Def Jam tried to find the right music for Christina, it never quite worked. The Ja Rule and Lil' Mo and Ashanti collabs worked, but when he tried

  • I consume some of my hip-hip like an anorexic binge eats. Iintake all the beats and rhymes I can load up on my laptop and before they canproperly digest I figuratively drag myself over to my computer's recycle bin to throwup all of the violence, misogyny and dope slanging that just doesn't fit theimage of the phat dude in the mirror.

Non hip-hop lovers wonder how I can listen to some of themost foul and be unaffected.

I shrug. I've been compartmentalizing for, what, 39 yearsnow?

There's one aspect of binging on gangsta rap that justifiesthe high. It's the inadvertent discovery of a poignant message.

I've come to expect hustling lessons from Young Jeezy andtook a listen to The Recessionbecause I dug the Kanye collab "Put On" and thought the album title wasespecially timely and cool. I was just looking for a couple more club bangers, but when I scanned the back of the CD and saw the track called "My President"featuring Nas I smirked.

  • Looks like Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio has come up with the cure for DMX's addiction to jail. The hip-hop star and repeat offender, like all of Arpaio's other inmates in the Maricopa county jail, must wear pink t-shirts, underwear and socks.

The girlie wardrobe colors caught DMX by surprise. "This is ridiculous, this is disrespectful," DMX said with a sarcastic laugh during an interview with My Fox Phoenix. "Why the pink?"

Arpaio told Fox & Friends he has had the pink policy in place for 10 years with success. He said the inmates were stealing the white underwear so he dyed them pink.

(Click photo below to view DMX's interview clip.)

According to Arpaio, DMX is serving time for charges of animal cruelty, drugs and fraud. Arpaio did not express any sympathy for the hardcore rapper, adding, that jail was not supposed to be fun.

DMX misses the good ole days. "This is not where I want to be man," DMX said. "It used to be, I'll go there, I'll be the life of the party, and ... it's

  • Hip-hop fans know well the late rap superstar Notorious B.I.G., who quickly rose to the top of the rap game with the release of his 1994 instant classic Ready To Die and steady stream of hits.

But Cheo Hodari Coker, who co-wrote with Reggie Rock Bythewood the hip-hop legend's biopic Notorious, wants moviegoers to get to know the man behind the music.

"My greatest hope is that people walk into the theater thinking about Notorious B.I.G. and leave thinking about Christopher Wallace," Coker said via telephone on the eve of the Fox Searchlight movie's release.

Coker conducted a wealth of first hand research on Biggie, having interviewed and reviewed his works in numerous newspaper and magazine articles. Coker was the last journalist to interview Biggie before his untimely death, just 36 hours before Biggie was fatally shot on March 9, 1997 following a music award show afterparty. Coker also authored the biography Unbelievable: The Life, Death And Afterlife Of The Notorious B.I.G.
