Andre 3000 convincingly transformed into Jimi Hendrix while filming a biopic on the late rock legend, a new photo reveals.
A photograph of the OutKast rapper on the set of the film All Is By My Side was posted on the Toronto International Film Festival’s website. The movie will premiere in September during the event.
The similarities between Andre and Hendrix are striking. In a performance shot, Andre adopts Hendrix’s huge, unkempt afro, solemn demeanor, and a colorful, psychedelic ensemble. The pose is a close match to a 1967 image of Hendrix playing with the Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Fifth Dimension club in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
A posting of Andre’s Hendrix photo on Yahoo! Music’s Facebook page sparked mixed reaction from music fans.
“HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HIM!!!” Desi Roque said in a comment.
J L Bremer thinks Andre’s complexion is an issue. “Hendrix was light skinned though, I’m not sure about him playing the [role] although I’ve been a fan of OutKast music for quite some time,” J L wrote. “They probably could of got someone else who looked a lot like him however I’m sure they had [their] reasons for picking him.”
Monty Greer believes another actor offered a more convincing portrayal: “I think Wood Harris looked more like him in the old movie,” he said.
Another reader questioned Andre’s musicality. “Considering I bet he has no clue how to play a guitar it’s probably not going to be good,” Michael Blevins wrote.
Tasha Ellis is anxious to see the project: “I love any thing he’s a part of…This movie is gonna be a must see must have…”
In an interview last year, Andre 3000 said he thought fans would be pleased with the movie and explained his mindset while filming.
“I didn’t look at him as an icon because when you’re in it, you don’t know you’re an icon,” he said. “You don’t know you’re an icon until other people say you’re an icon.”
“I tried to say What would Jimi want people to know that they can’t get off of YouTube,” he said.
According to MTV, Hendrix’s estate denied the filmmakers the rights to use his music in the movie. Andre will instead perform Hendrix’s covers of songs by the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Muddy Waters.
Resemblance aside, it’s difficult to image how Andre will fare covering Hendrix’s performances. Andre’s vocal tone, singing and rapping styles are completely different than Hendrix’s.
Andre is known for having one of hip-hop’s most distinct, nasal and hard to duplicate sounds. He downplays his nasal effect when singing in his falsetto register on his tracks like “Hey Ya” and "Miss Jackson," but it still is nothing like Hendrix’s deeper, rock styling on classics “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child” or even his cover of the Beatle’s “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.”
Though Andre has been playing guitar after the release of OutKast’s sophomore album, 1996’s ATLiens, his guitar solo on Frank Ocean’s “Pink Matter,” released earlier this year, definitely won’t impress Hendrix fans. It is a choppy, fumblingly and easily forgettable moment. I suspect, another musician will actually do the guitar playing in All Is By My Side.
