It is easy to take a quote out of context, especially whenyou were not privy to the conversation from which it originated.
When I saw headlines that said Lil' Wayne was looking forwardto going to jail, I got antsy.
He was scheduled to begin his 12-month sentence at Riker's Island today, but it has been delayed. In October he struck a plea deal admittingguilt in a 2007 gun charge. But due to his need to have dental surgery (diamond-encrustedgrill removal possibly?), he has been given a hearing date of March 2.RollingStone magazine, "This is Lil' Waynegoing to jail. Nobody I can talk to can tell me what that's like. I just say I'm looking forward to it."
What does Lil' Waynemean?
There's no way he could mean that jail is going to be cool?
Or could he?
Though he clearly won't be allowed to leave the facilityduring his incarceration, he told the magazine that his time away from hisfamily won't curb his songwriting.
"I'll have an iPod, and I'll make sure they keep sending mebeats," he said in the February 18 issue. His manager is pursuing opportunitiesfor the New Orleansrapper to communicate with fans via Twitter, and secure as many TV, clothing,or endorsement deals possible.
Access to a computer, iPod, and writing pad don't constitutefreedom, but those amenities sound pretty good for a person who pleads guiltyto second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon.
Near the end of the Rolling Stone story it appears that Wayne's "I'm lookingforward to it" reply to being incarcerated might instead imply hisindifference.
"I look at things as everything is meant to be," he said. "Iknow it's an experience that I need to have if God's putting me through it. SoI don't look at it as wrong. I just ... I damn sure don't look at it as right, that's all."
It's funny because I was drawn to the story because Ithought Lil' Waynewas being cocky, brushing off the notion of going to jail as something novelty.
But after reading the entire story, I get the impressionthat he has accepted his predicament, good or bad.
Maybe what he means is that he is looking forward to life'snext lesson.
Considering his circumstances, I think that outlook isideal.
