It only takes spending 60 seconds with Rodney Jerkins and his wife Joy Enriquez to understand why NUVO TV greenlit their reality show, "House of Joy." Yes, they are larger than life music figures, but they are funny.
In Part 2 of their exclusive interview with Yahoo Music's The Aftermath, Joy recalls auditioning three times for televised talent competition "Star Search" before she actually made the cut and ultimately won at the age of 15.
Though the experience was great, she does not think the "Star Search" title helped her secure her deal with Babyface and L.A. Reid's La Face Records. "I sang for them live," she said. "They cared about my charisma. They cared about my personality, and they wanted to hear my voice."
It was L.A. Reid who introduced Joy to Rodney. "He gets a little bit of credit for sending her down to Jersey," Rodney said.
Rodney said it was love at first sight. "The first day she walked into my studio, I looked at her and I said, 'I'm going to marry you one day," he said. "I told her that in 1999."
Joy said there is one perk of being married to a hit producer that she has yet to cash in on, and that is getting him to make her a hot record. "When you go to our house, you have 100 plaques," she said. "I walk passed Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson and Beyoncé ... everyday. They stare at me. ... I just want to be on my own walls."
