I AmT-Pain feature, your voice transforms into the computer-generated sound youhear on T-Pain records. This feature is going to be a big hit in the sing-alongspots.
Users can purchase T-Pain songs, and easily upload theirmixes to social networking sites. The $2.99 add-on is already No. 1 on iTunes TopPaid Apps chart.
I recently interviewed T-Pain about the tool. He alsodiscussed Jay-Z's Auto-Tunediss "D.O.A.[Death of Auto-Tune]," TheLonely Island parody "I'mOn A Boat," and collabing with Taylor Swift at the CMTAwards.
Hip Hop MediaTraining: What made you create an Auto-Tune iPhone app?
T-Pain: Basically, I buy apps all the time. I see a lot ofartists with apps. I figured I just needed an app that would just [blow theirsout the water].
How long did it taketo get the app created?
About six months.
Was that longer thanyou anticipated?
It was way faster.
You pretty much go to the song section, hit one of my songs. The song starts. Hit the play button to start singing.
Last year, you madethe song "Karaoke," and said you were mad that all of these people were bitingyour style. Now you want everyone to use Auto-Tune?
Now, I'm getting paid for it. [laughs]
Are the people atApple excited about this app?
They love it. They are putting it on the front page of theApple website. They know it's going to blow up. It has to be successful. Theyuse the app.
I saw a clip of someregular dudes in an office using the app. It was funny.
Those were the people that made it.
Did you take offenseto Jay-Z's "D.O.A.[Death of Auto-Tune]" track?
No. It was easy to figure out what he was talking about. There are so many great rappers. It's disappointing that all rappers want tosing and all singers want to rap. If anything, [Auto-Tune] is going to help yousound better. Jay is saying, 'You are singing too much. Get back to rap.'
If it was, I would lose money.
It was cool seeingyou in the Lonely Island video "I'm On A Boat"? Wereyou excited about working with them?
I was already a huge fan of Andy Sandberg. I didn't think Iwas that important to be on Saturday Night Live, to be on SNL and that album.
How did you gethooked up with Taylor Swift at the CMTAwards?
Taylorcame up with the idea. CMT came to me and said that Taylor wanted to do a song with her in thevideo. I said, 'Of course.'
That was everything that she wanted to do.
Would you ever make asong without Auto-Tune?
On every record I put at least two songs on there without Auto-Tune.One of them is, "I'm'N Luv Wit A Stripper."
How good of a singerare you without Auto-Tune?
Not the greatest. I'm not Chris Brown or Usher, but I canhold a note.
