List Of The Day
  • The Year of the Woman

Know who thinks 'The Year of the Woman' is every year? My mom! And I'm inclined to agree with her. But the music business isn't always so caring. It's been promoting dudes since before I can remember. Then when rock 'n' roll got big, they had the dudes wear long hair just so the women wouldn't take charge. Paranoid thinking or dead accurate? You decide!

Anyhow, I took a gander at the fine, fine acts that were making music and money this year and I wrote them down on a piece of paper and put them in an order that I liked. I even threw in an old person so I wouldn't lose my extremely valuable and loyal Medicare demographic. Up With AARP!

One thing you must admit about this list, it sure is pretty!

Another year is kaput. In the meantime, things happened this year in what's left of the music business. While everyone has their own favorite moment of the year -- mine, for the record, was driving other people crazy playing Rebecca Black's "Friday" with a nasty smile on my face -- here are 25 that surely caused heads to turn and/or hurt.

And just think if the world spontaneously combusts on January 1, 2012, this blog will be recounting The End of History!

As the music gets older, we have to accept that the musicians who make it also grow older, with one of the side effects of advanced age being death. While there are a number of younger-than-they-should-ever-be folks on this list, there are also a few decent ages reached. Which, if you consider the life of a musician, is pretty damn surprising, too. The general wear and tear on those in the performing arts isn't just in the partying, though that helps: it's in the rollercoaster ride that is their career.

I've broken it down as best I can. Let us not mourn, but celebrate their lives.

  • Could there possibly be 25 more albums worth making slightly informative comments about from 1996? Yes, yes there are. Just look at this list. Some were even bought! How quaint! But then, weren't most of us on dial-up? You think I wanted to download an album that would take 14 hours to complete, provided the connection wasn't lost?

The 'bad ol' days' of computers were the 'almost tolerable days' of music. If one follows this logic, it can be proven that music got worse because of the Internet! Maybe because of this very blog! It also got worse because of CDs. So, it was vinyl that made music great and paper magazines. Neil Young knows this. Now you know it. But let's grab mp3s of the following and be really disappointed!

  • Tim Mosenfelder/Getty ImagesAt the age of 80 years old legendary blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin has died. Best known for being Howlin' Wolf's right-hand man, delivering the sting while the Wolf delivered the punch, Sumlin has had a long, distinguished career. We wish him well in his new career in Blues Heaven, where he will meet up with many of the people on this list.

Ranking guitar players is a silly but moderately enjoyable task. I've ranked them in a random-precise order, giving points to more than guitar notes, but to artistry as well. This shouldn't be confused with the 10 Greatest Bluesmen, but there is some overlap. I'm attracted to many originators as well, which may be why Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Mike Bloomfield are not on this list. Lead Belly should be, but the list is already set in stone (or whatever the internet is made out of.)
