List Of The Day
  • Everyone likes to have friends! Well, almost everyone. Stay tuned when I list the Ten Music Superstars Who Would NOT Be Your Friend.

Most of us would like to have famous friends. Famous. Rich. Beautiful. I don't know about you, but I'm getting pretty tired of paying for the Ramen and the Schlitz. My friends are OK, I guess, but the group below could be better for my career. So, excuse me, as I make a few phone calls.

    10) Drake: He's such a nice, respectable guy, the Richie Cunningham of R&B. Take him home to your mom and you might have a new roomie.

    9) Paul McCartney: I'm told Paul McCartney really is the nice guy he comes across as. He's not a jerk once the spotlight goes out. Good to hear. Remember he's vegetarian and likes medicinal marijuana. Mention how much you think Pipes of Peace is underrated. And unlike Ricky Gervais don't make any Heather Mills jokes.

    8) Ringo Starr: Ringo was always lovable. And I wouldn't feel right putting Paul on the list and leaving off Ringo. Who

  • While highly-paid record executives once liked to think they knew how to make decisions, sometimes the public willed things the other way.

Here is a list of 25 hits that were originally B-Sides. FYI, it's said that Elvis, The Beatles and Fats Domino had the highest amount of double A-sides, that is singles where both sides became hits. I'm still trying to figure out to turn my hard drive upside down and get something out of it.

    25) Hank Williams - "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" / "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It": I'm a huge fan of "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It," especially the version where Hank can't buy no MILK. But in terms of classic status, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" is the hands-down winner.

    24) Deee-Lite - "Groove Is In the Heart" / "What Is Love?": I've never heard the A-side. And I was forcefed the B-side, "Groove Is In the Heart" and I remember thinking the video was fun to watch. But I was young and unemployed and likely never turned up the sound.

    23) The Spinners - "I'll

  • I'm really good at this. Compared to the weatherman. It doesn't mean I'm accurate, but my ideas sound plausible. If I could really see the future, I'd put my money down on all those high-paying lotteries and stocks that are bound to zoom.

But here's what I see happening in 2011!

    10) More Famous People Will Die: It sounds obvious I know. And since the advent of Facebook, it feels like they're dying quicker. With the government reporting that 10,000 baby-boomers a week will retire for the next 18 years, the people that entertained all those babies are likely to be approaching the death spiral. Even those younger are at high risk judging by how much cocaine was snorted in the 1970s and 1980s.

    9) A Star Is Born!: We don't know who it is yet, which makes this prognostication business a little faulty, but somewhere out there is the next Michael Jackson or at least the next Rivers Cuomo! Of course, we can take the easy way out and look at what celebrities are having kids and assume we'll

  • Tim Hardin died on December 29, 1980 from a heroin overdose. He'd acquired the habit overseas in Vietnam back in the early 1960s and spent the rest of his life battling it. John Lennon's death earlier in the month left Hardin in the shadows where he spent his entire career.

His earliest recordings feature a guy doing the blues-folk shuffle (and were not officially released until he became known with the songs listed below). Somehow (magic!) he started writing songs that were unlike anyone else's. His most popular songs were "If I Were A Carpenter" (the hit version being recorded by Bobby Darin) and "Reason To Believe." FYI, "Carpenter" would be something like my #12 pick, but here are the 10 I chose in a heartbeat. And I would gladly go to 20 and over.

    10) "Don't Make Promises" - The voice made you believe his truths and his lies. When he sang and warned others, it was like he was reminding himself of who he really was.

    9) "Last Sweet Moments" - Actually, I would recommend the entire

  • 2010: A Year That Was!

First, let me say that everyone should turn to Y! Music's That's Really Week for all their weekly music news. It's helped me sort out a year that featured 12 full months of stuff happening.

Listed below are the 25 items that we should all think about one more time! For she or he who does not remember the past is doomed to repeat it. And who likes repeats??

    25) January: Mariah Carey Feeling Happy During Speech - If you're like me (and really who isn't?), you probably like when people appear "happy" in public. Why else to watch those "Real" Housewives shows on TV? Or Jersey Shore? Or any group of not-so-interesting people? Of course, members of HA (Happy Anonymous) are just bizarre and should not be allowed near the entertainment world. Who doesn't love Mariah Carey when she isn't singing?

    24) January: Heidi Montag's Album Flops - It's always life-affirming when people who like prefab pop music put their foot down and say NO. It proves that not every clown in the circus is a star! I'm

  • First, my taste is my taste. I may no concessions to what is popular. I don't list albums to make my taste seem broad. The lack of hip-hop is because I don't enjoy the sound. I don't dance and I don't party and I, therefore, leave it people who genuinely enjoy that music to vote for it. No one needs me to go around pretending. Same goes for mainstream country. I don't enjoy it.

I am not hip. These choices are mostly obscure because music I like is rarely enjoyed by large groups of people. It was like this when I was in high school and it is that way now. I do not think that most people would like the music I like if they heard it. But I have found there are a few.

By all means, feel free to list your favorites of the year in the space below generously supplied by Y! Music.

    25) Freedy Johnston - Rain On the City (Bar None): The fact that Freedy wrote a song like "Evie's Garden" is reason enough for me to pay attention even when he isn't feeling particularly tuneful. By taking a few

  • Captain Beefheart, one of greatest bandleaders of all-time, has died at age 69 from complications from multiple sclerosis. Though the Captain smartly walked away from the music business in 1982 once he figured he could be more productive painting, he will be forever remembered for the fantastically powerful and weird music he produced.

Tom Waits, who was influenced by Beefheart, nailed it: "Once you've heard Beefheart, it's hard to wash him out of your clothes. It stains, like coffee or blood."

Rather than bore you with details you can surely find elsewhere, I submit ten great tracks from the Captain. He had a ton more. But you can't go wrong with anything listed below. Click and hear for yourself.

    10) "Old Fart At Play": Beefheart could see into the future and he knew, before many of his generation, that he would one day be old. He also knew the importance of playing until the end.

    9) "Yer Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond": Captain Beefheart played the blues like an alien from

  • Upon realizing that I've compiled over 400 "Lists of the Day," I realized that I do a lot of realizing stuff. I make connections where others would find something more important to do. I read over all 400 blogs and was thoroughly impressed that there was no discernible difference from the first blog to the latest blog. I'm like the McDonalds of List-Making.

I may be lousy, but I'm consistently lousy.

Which may put me at war with Ralph Waldo Emerson and all the fine comment-makers who, in the beginning, were particularly mean about this whole enterprise. As if I, somehow, was unaware of the futility of this act. The only people I've ever expected to agree with this column are 1) my fab g-friend, 2) my real-life friends, 3) people who think I can do something for them. I don't even like the word blog. How could I ever expect anyone else to agree on anything?

To those who think I "dumb down" this column, I assure you, I am this stupid.

But I believe that rock music--yes, I still call it

  • As a continuation of our much beloved segment where we make each other feel horribly, horribly old, I offer you the year 1975, often considered to be a pretty foul year for music since it preceded the punk explosion. However, and I do believe I speak for many here, 1975 is an absolute gem compared to just about year beginning with a "20."

I tried to keep it balanced here. The order is, once again, randomly precise. But the classics should scream out at you. Some I've never heard, but saw in the record stores and always wondered. Others I've likely played to death.

    25) Black Sabbath - Sabotage: The first album where Tony Iommi sounds like he grew new fingertips, while Ozzy sounds likes he's having a nervous breakdown (his head really hurts). "Hole In The Sky" and "Symptom Of The Universe" veer wildly out of control. Besides, who doesn't love the album cover and wish they could be wearing red tights?

    24) Kiss - Alive!: They also released Dressed To Kill this year, but it was the live

  • We here at List of the Day were given secret inside information regarding the great Ozzy Osbourne's Top 10 Metal Picks for 2010. As any fan of great music knows, Ozzy is among the pioneers of all music that is heavy (well, him and Wagner) and one of its most distinctive voices. As readers of this blog surely know, we love, admire and respect his Ozzness. We also wonder how often he reads this blog!

It must be said that this special preview from Ozzy makes me feel like Moses carrying down the Big Guy's Top 10 Commandments. Except Ozzy was courteous enough not to write them on a bunch of heavy rocks!

Since Ozzy is a man of few words (or at least ones I can understand), I've written little explanations on what these entries could possibly mean. Now I really feel like a disciple. Hmmn, what could the great man be thinking? Let me start and my own church and decide.

I'm assuming he went 1 to 10. But then I'm not real adept at the British numerical system. But I try!

    1) Ozzy - Scream: Ha,
