  • History may hold that there was really only one Bionic Woman--maybe two, if you count that classic TV show's failed remake--but Christina Aguilera is likely to change that with her new album, which bears the same Bionic Woman title but sounds like nothing that happened in the previous millennium.

With its striking cover illustration, which depicts Aguilera as an apparent android, to the much-viewed video for "Not Myself Tonight," the singer is moving forward artistically on a very conspicuous level. Collaborations with top-level artists abound on the new album, some of them surprisingly esoteric for a singer with such a broad commercial following--including M.I.A., Sia, LeTigre and Peaches, among others.

Aguilera will be all over the place in 2010, not least due to her highly anticipated appearance in Burlesque, a film bowing this fall that will feature her alongside Cher, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci and promises to be an eye-opener.

  • It's big news when Jack Johnson releases a new album.

The much-loved singer/songwriter, who releases his new album To The Sea next week, has made a career of being a non-careerist--that is, by simply doing what he does, doing it well, and having a marked distaste for the typical marketing/promo blitz that dogs the efforts of nearly all of his contemporaries.

It's just part of what makes him different.

Perhaps more notably--and absolutely the exception to every rule in the entertainment business-Johnson makes a habit of taking his tour profits and, incredibly, donating them to charity. He did it in 2008 via the establishment of the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, and will do it once again with this year's tour profits. And there will be tour profits aplenty.

To The Sea is a marvelous Jack Johnson album:  Intimately recorded in a near-live format in Johnson's own studio, the record captures the charm and seeming simplicity of the singer's music at its best. But of course "seeming"

  • The Rolling Stones have been called The World's Greatest Rock 'n' Roll band. And Exile On Main Street has been called by many the best album they ever recorded.

So this week's re-release of that 1972 classic is no small affair.

The original 18-song LP--which featured hits "Tumbling Dice" and "Happy" and was jam-packed with energetic and raw, bluesy numbers--has been bolstered by the addition of 10 previously unreleased tracks from the same era, including "Plundered My Soul," already out in video form and drawing raves from longtime fans.

Additionally comes the release of the fascinating documentary Stones In Exile--featuring an enormous array of previously unseen images, film segments and interviews, including contributions from Martin Scorsese, Anita Pallenberg, producer Jimmy Miller, and saxophonist Bobby Keys, among others. By any measure a worthy companion to Exile-the-album, it's directed by Stephen Kijak, produced by John Battsek and Victoria Pearman, and will be released on DVD

  • It is no small thrill to sit face to face with Jeff Beck--by unanimous acclaim likely the  finest rock 'n' roll guitarist in the world, and a highly affable fellow to boot.

Beck, who stopped by Los Angeles a few weeks ago to perform on American Idol with singer Joss Stone, also give a private performance at the Grammy Museum for a small and very lucky audience. Much of the night was devoted to tracks from Emotion & Commotion, his latest album, and one which-incredibly, given his status as a veteran artist-entered the Billboard charts at #11, the highest first-week showing there of his career.

Beck's appearance at the Grammy Museum was no accident; the guitarist received his fifth career Grammy this year, in fact, for his version of the Beatles' "A Day In the Life" from his recent DVD Jeff Beck Performing This Week...Live At Ronnie Scott's. Between his recent tour, his dual concerts with fellow former-Yardbird Eric Clapton, and an upcoming appearance at the Bonnaroo Festival, the

  • Things are looking up for the Drive-By Truckers.

Not that they haven't been looking up for a long time, mind you. The band, based in Athens, Ga., has seen a steady rise in both the quality of their music and the amount of attention being focused on them since their earliest days in the late '90s. From their humble beginnings with 1998's indie debut Gangstability to their newest album The Big To-Do--which entered the charts at a record high for the band--the Truckers continue to both get better and enlarge their fan base with every new album.

Check out these webisodes featuring members of the band discussing individual tracks from The Big To-Do--and if you want more, don't hesitate to check out http://www.drivebytruckers.com/

  • Anyone who listened to the radio in the early '70s--and for that matter, has listened ever since--couldn't help but be thrilled by the recent pairing of two iconic singer/songwriters of legendary stature.

By pop music standards, those two artists--Carole King and James Taylor--may actually be responsible for the creation of the term "singer/songwriter."

Between the two of them, King & Taylor have had a plethora of hits across the decades, sold innumerable albums throughout the world, and been honored repeatedly with Grammy awards, almost to the point of absurdity.

But back at the beginning of the '70s, before King would record her landmark album Tapestry and Taylor had yet to release his breakthrough Sweet Baby James, things were different.

Like many artists on their way to finding a mass audience, they found exposure wherever they could. And back then, even as now, one of those means was by doing a gig at Los Angeles's famous Troubadour venue. Which is what Taylor and King did

  • There is such a thing as career momentum and Britain's Corinne Bailey Rae--who released her first album in 2006 and received a plethora of awards nominations throughout the world for it--continues to have it.

Rae, whose unique voice brings life to her songs in a manner that deeply resonates in the listener, is back with a brand new album, and it's quietly spectacular.

The Sea, released earlier this year, is an extremely solid package of new material excellently played with her full band, that like most great records, grows in impact with each successive listen.

We here at Y! Music were thrilled when Corinne--last in our studios in 2006--recently stopped by for a return visit, with her full band in tow and offering up three extraordinary live performances.

A warm and gracious woman, she again proved a fascinating interview subject and filled us in with the making of The Sea and much more.

Check out these performances, and the accompanying interview, and you'll see why Corinne Bailey Rae

  • Before we get started ... With sunset-to-sunrise club shows all over town and alternative gatherings like Chaz Fest, it's hard not to be one of the 24-hour party people during this annual celebration. But as Jazz Fest ticket prices and crowds balloon, it's worth tipping the hat to the Louisiana Music Factory, a top ten US record store, and their free in-store performances between weekends. Intimate (try five feet away) shouts out from Trombone Shorty, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and the dozens who perform at the French Quarter shop are a great antidote to fighting the swarms around stages out at the Fest.

THURSDAY: Typically, Thursday of second weekend is the Jazz Fest aficionado's fave day: local focus, comfortable crowds, a real hit of Louisiana color. However, somebody didn't get the memo. Today's attending throngs make is seem more like a wall-to-wall-people Saturday. Ugh.
