  • If you think you're unfamiliar with the Australian dream-pop combo Temper Trap, think again. Their gorgeously goosebumpy indie anthem "Sweet Disposition" is probably the soundtrack of your life right now, as it has been featured in countless commercials for companies like Chrysler, Diet Coke, and most notably Rhapsody. The latter ad hard-sells the Temper Trap's lush, widescreen music so enthusiastically, it almost seems like a promo for the band itself, not any specific product.

This of course has immensely helped the Melbourne four-piece generate major buzz in the U.S., so they've recently journeyed the great distance from the lower hemisphere to tour the States. And their travels naturally included a stop this week in Austin, Texas for the 2010 South By Southwest festival.

Temper Trap have in fact been touring so much that they apparently aren't watching much TV these days--because when I caught up with frontman Dougie Mandagi and guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto in a wine cellar at

  • With their evocative, atmospheric sound and enigmatic stage presence, southwest London three-piece the xx are one the most intriguing acts playing the Austin music festival South By Southwest this year. Their legend in fact precedes them, with the mythology surrounding their upbringing and formation at Britain's famed Elliott School (whose alumni including Four Tet, Hot Chip, and Burial) making for a fascinating back story.

This fable of course had me imagining some supercool school, a sort of an alternative Anglophilic version of Fame. You know, an indie-rock institution churning out one U.K. buzz band after another, a campus where black-clad, pasty-skinned hipster Londoners swoonily and doomily dance in the halls in big goth-group singalong numbers. But when I spoke to the xx's Jamie backstage at La Zona Rosa after one of the xx's well-received SXSW gigs, I learned that the trio's beginnings were far more humble.

To be honest, I didn't learn that much more about the xx during

  • A couple years ago, Scotland's Fratellis were one of the must-see bands at the Austin musicfest South By Southwest. And now in 2010, Fratellis frontman Jon Lawler (aka Jon Fratelli) is back in Texas, but this time he's returned to SXSW with his new cohort, chanteuse Lou Hickey, in his other project, Codeine Velvet Club.

Sounding extremely unlike the jaunty, Merseybeatish pub-pop of the Fratellis, CVC's ambitiously un-indie sound is lushly layered and film-noirish, evoking old Hollywood glamour, American gothic, and classic torch-singer jazz and R&B. While the Fratellis will eventually return from their hiatus, in the meantime it's refreshing to hear something so different and unexpected from Lawler, and his new duo's gigs at SXSW this week have been dreamy productions indeed.

I recently caught up with Jon and Lou backstage at the Austin Convention Center's Day Stage Café, where CVC did their best to transform their afternoon timeslot and fluorescent-lit conference-room setting into a

  • Remember that classic song line about the superwoman who could bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan? Well, British soul singer VV Brown is sort of the modern-day, indie-scene equivalent of such a multi-tasking goddess. She pens stellar songs not only for herself but for many other artists; she authors comic books; she runs a cool vintage clothing website, www.vvvintage.com; and she's even a professional model. And despite her hectic schedule, she always looks fabulous. For instance, at 2010's Austin, Texas music festival South By Southwest--where VV was playing several eagerly anticipated gigs in support of her acclaimed debut disc, Travelling Like The Light--she was rocking a towering top hat, forearm-fuls of baubles, multi-colored toenails, and Grace Jones-worthy shoulderpads, when everyone else was slouching around in Converse and skinny jeans. VV Brown is a true star.

When I caught up with VV before her first gig of the festival, we went in search of a realtively quiet place

  • Swedish buzz band Miike Snow almost wasn't a band at all. Two-thirds consisting of the production team Bloodshy & Avant (aka Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg)--a duo responsible for hits by pure pop stars like Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, J.Lo, and Madonna--the group started as a studio project rounded out by American singer-songwriter Andrew Wyatt. But they later became a full-fledged live act, and judging by the throngs of hipsters lined up around the block to see Miike Snow perform at this year's Austin music festival South By Southwest, Christian and Pontus can safely quit their "day jobs" and devote themselves to their own music with Andrew full-time. Britney's loss is indie-pop music fans' gain.

I caught up with the Miike Snow guys at their beyond-capacity Filter magazine party showcase at SXSW, where despite their initial jetlag they eventually livened up when discussing robots, South By Southwest swag, their pleasant surprise over their unexpected success, and leaving

  • The Austin, Texas musicfest South By Southwest is a must-visit destination for young artists searching for their one elusive big break, since it's an annual hub for A&R reps, talent scouts, and other music-biz types. But the many newbies hitting the convention this year ought to look up to one of this year's biggest SXSW acts, seasoned soul belter Sharon Jones, for three major reasons. One: She's one of the finest performers working the festival circuit today. Two: At age 54, she's living proof that it's never too late to become a superstar. And three: Her later-in-life success is evidence that sometimes a singer just needs genuine talent, not the fabled major-label machine, in order to make it big.

Sharon had trouble breaking into the biz in the 1970s--she claims label execs told her she didn't have a marketable pop-star image--but after teaming with the Mark Ronson-affiliated Dap-Kings and releasing music on their fiercely independent Daptone record label, she's unexpectedly found

  • Back and stronger than ever, Lifehouse has just seen their brand new album Smoke & Mirrors enter the Top 10 in its first week of release--the fourth in their career to do so.

In fact, that chart debut is the highest in the band's 10-year career, and an indication that the Lifehouse crew--Jason Wade, Ricky Woolstenhulme Jr., Bryce Soderberg and Ben Carey--has not slowed in the slightest since 2001, when their single "Hanging By A Moment" became the most played radio track of the year.

Here for your pleasure now is a dual helping of one of Smoke & Mirrors' finest tracks--"Halfway Gone," first exclusively performed by the band in the studio, then an additional piece showcasing the band during their recent eventful European tour.

As an added bonus, here's some great interview footage with the band from 2007 via Y! Music's Live Sets program. There's some warmth, some humor, and some passion to be seen--and those same elements are exactly what make Lifehouse's music so memorable!

  • The massive tragedy of the Haitian earthquake has been enormous in scope--and the responses to that tragedy have been, in some ways, similarly enormous.

One of the most conspicuous responses was Friday night's charity telethon, Hope For Haiti Now: A Global Benefit For Earthquake Relief. Check out the video below and keep watching for a steady flow of the night's highlights.

Among the artists who performed at the event: Wyclef Jean, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira and Sting in New York City; Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift and a group performance by Keith Urban, Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow in Los Angeles; and Coldplay plus a group performance by Bono, The Edge, Jay-Z and Rihanna in London.

The worldwide broadcast was hosted by Wyclef Jean in New York, with George Clooney hosting in Los Angeles and CNN's Anderson Cooper reporting from Haiti.

  • It's no small event when an artist as musical and commercially successful as Norah Jones joins us in the Yahoo! Music Studios--and her appearance here a few weeks ago was about the best possible holiday present any of us could imagine.

In town to promote her superb new album The Fall, Norah--whose career sales have just surpassed 40 million worldwide--brought an amazing band into the studio with her. Included among the cast of musician's musicians were Sasha Dobson (guitar, backing vocals and percussion), John Kirby (keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Gus Seyffert (bass) and Smokey Hormel (guitar).

The Fall, Jones' new LP, in some ways represents a shift from the "girl at her piano" image that the massive success of her 2002 debut Come Away With Me could not help but cultivate. It's superb. The varied arrangements, the upbeat nature of several numbers, even the fact that, as you'll see, she now often stands while energetically performing--some might say it's a whole new Norah.
