Why Macklemore Says He Robbed Kendrick Lamar

Macklemore had a great night at the Grammys, taking home awards for best new artist, best rap song, best rap performance and best album. But he feels that one of his wins was undeserved.

Macklemore believes the best rap album award should have gone to Kendrick Lamar, who went home empty handed despite being nominated for 7 awards for his critically acclaimed "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City" album.

After the ceremony that featured 33 gay and straight couples being wed during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' performance of "Same Love," Macklemore posted a text he sent to Kendrick. He posted a copy of the text on his Instagram page.

"You got robbed," he wrote in a text time stamped at 8:53 p.m. "I wanted you to win. You should have. It's weird and sucks that I robbed you."

Macklemore said he intended to address the issue during his acceptance speech. "…the music started playing during my speech and I froze," he explained in the private message.

The "Thrift Shop" rapper, who also beat out entries from Eminem, Drake, Kanye West and 2 Chainz, expressed his gratitude to Kendrick.

"Congrats on this year and your music," he said via text. "Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love."

In his post, Macklemore described the "Same Love" performance as a career highlight.
