New This Week
  • New Albums For Old!

It's a strong week of new releases--indicating that however ailing the record industry may be, there are still artists who command respect, command adoration, and command that you buy their brand new records today!

    We've got icons from the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s--and Michael Bolton!

We've got hip bands from the new millennium, striving to maintain their momentum and remain as relevant as their press releases say they are!

And we've got a date with destiny!

Court Yard Hounds: Court Yard Hounds (Columbia)  This week's biggest news may be the release of the new album by the Court Yard Hounds--that is, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire, known in some quarters as two-thirds of the Dixie Chicks! And while it's a thoroughly excellent record, I'd be remiss in not mentioning the very large question its release brings up: Were they both not in school they day everyone learned "courtyard" was one word and not two? All told, this is a tasteful, credible set which will set the stage for a

  • Women Power!

It's a week dominated by women!

Well, women who've released new albums, that is! And what a line-up: Melissa Etheridge, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Courtney Love's Hole, iCarly's Miranda Cosgrove, and even a fabulous hits collection by Carole King!

It's as if men no longer mattered anymore!

Luckily, however, thanks to inequities in the workplace, only men can afford to buy new albums these days! So it all works out!

Melissa Etheridge: Fearless Love (Island)  Only a cynic would note that the release of this new album came within a week of singer Etheridge's telling Oprah Winfrey that her breaking up with partner Tammy Lee Micheals was "as mutual as those things can be"! Heck, all I know is that she was the last thing on my mind until that announcement made me wonder what Melissa's been doing lately! And what's this? A brand new album? Heck, I think I'll buy it and listen to see if there are any lyrical "clues" about what was going on in the couple's life! So what's the verdict? Heck, I

  • All Your Old Favorites!

Just returned from my first-ever trip to the Coachella Music Festival, I'm embarrassed to admit! Embarrassed because I've been living in Los Angeles for almost 25 years and never before saw fit to go there!

Let's just say it was hell!

Still, what is life but a learning experience? And in my case, what did I learn? I learned while driving back and listening to nearly everything ever recorded by the Steve Miller Band that the non-hit songs on Abracadabra virtually laid the groundwork for Weezer's entire career!

Of course I could've learned that driving to the dry cleaners, but then I wouldn't have experienced the joy of hearing music I liked being drowned out by the moronic hip-hop beats blaring from the tent next door!

    Plus, sweating is cool!

Cypress Hill: Rise Up (Priority)  It's been a long time since Cypress Hill released an album, and of course since then, both the cotton gin and steam engine have been invented! Luckily, the lovable rapping trio invited a host of guest stars to

  • Beck To Basics!

Releases by Jeff Beck, MGMT and Gucci Mane highlight the first paragraph of this week's blog about hot new albums!

Alternately, releases by people about whom you might be mildly curious--such as Natalie Merchant and Jason Castro--are the subject of the second!

Finally, the reissue of Iggy & the Stooges' Raw Power merits its own mention in this third paragraph!

Lastly, this final sentence precedes the actual body of album review copy!

Jeff Beck: Emotion & Commotion (Atco/Rhino)  Albums by Jeff Beck--who to many represents the pinnacle of rock 'n' roll guitarists--are few and far between, and this latest release is his first studio session in seven years. Is it good? You bet! It's also something of a stylistic mishmash: Between instrumental tracks such as "Over The Rainbow" and Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" are vocal numbers featuring the likes of Joss Stone, Imelda May and Olivia Safe, all of them well-played and well-sung, but something of an unfocused sonic smorgasbord compared to the

  • New releases by Madonna, the Doors, former J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf and the BoDeans conclusively prove that 2010 is really the '80s with a better health plan!

And in an era when record labels have voiced their interest in reducing the number of individual album tracks to "decrease consumer cost," and decided it might make better strategic sense to release a pair of "mini-albums" by a brand new artist in a given year--rather than a full-fledged debut set that might easily tank and lay all their plans to waste--I say why not?

After all, I'm saving all my money to buy the Ke$ha box set this Christmas!

Madonna: Sticky & Sweet CD/DVD (Warner Brothers)  As time goes by, it becomes easier and easier to enjoy Madonna and value her enormous contribution to popular culture! This generous set--which captures the pop goddess in live performance in Argentina before 65 billion fans and includes both a CD and DVD--gives us all a chance to step back, hear such hits as "Like A Prayer" and

  • After a few pesky weeks in Texas and Florida, I'm finally back in my luxurious office in California--where I can sit back, listen to the week's finest music offerings, and then write about 10 other new releases just because it feels right!

But you can bet your boots that the 10 releases below merit your attention and more!

With new albums by Usher, Erykah Badu and Alan Jackson falling in our laps in just one week alone, how could music--and, indeed, our lives--be any better?

    Let's all buy them simultaneously!

Usher: Raymond v. Raymond (Jive)  Though some call him the new Chris Brown, word is that Usher is actually older than the famed pop singer, and thus has probably been making records even longer! But old age is no problem here, as the dashing vocalist appears with many contemporary faves--including the ridiculously talented Nicki Minaj--and with the help of T.I., will.i.am and Ludacris, the man fashions an album that, as its product description details, "is sure to paint a vivid

  • Show And Tell!

They often say the most inspired writing is a product of stimulating surroundings--"they" in this case being some guys I met on a bus a few years ago--so be prepared for the most compelling blog you've ever read--courtesy of the wifi provided by the McDonald's at Biscayne Boulevard and NE 135th St. in North Miami, Florida!

And what a big week of new releases to be enjoyed! Between great DVD reissues like the classic T.A.M.I. Show movie, the new Bird & The Bee tribute to Hall & Oates, and the return of the immensely talented Justin Bieber, the talented Justin Bieber, or just simply Justin Bieber, depending on your outlook, this could be the greatest new release week since McDonald's unleashed their Caramel Iced Coffee!

If you're like me, you're lovin' it!

The T.A.M.I. Show Collector's Edition DVD (Shout Factory)  Anyone of a certain generation who grew up watching MTV really has little idea what things were like prior to being able to watch every unnecessary creative spurt of artists

  • In a fascinating experiment, major record labels have apparently met in secret and agreed that this week--just for kicks--they'd release absolutely no albums of interest just to see if anybody noticed!

    Why?

Accountants at the labels have determined that since most new releases lose money, by issuing absolutely nothing worthwhile, losses will be kept to a minimum and they'll be praised by their higher-ups for saving money!

In short: whoever loses the least money wins!

That said, the new Kate Smith reissue is quite the stunner!

The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights (Third Man/WB)  A live album by Detroit's acclaimed White Stripes is not a bad idea; whatever oomph they have is probably best experienced in a live, sweaty concert hall, where the aroma of smoke, beer, and sweat mixes with the primal odors of pure, unadulterated rock 'n' roll! It's just one more reason why the band's devoting this album to the decades-long marketing of Northern Bathroom Tissue is such a good

  • Apologies for being a day late in posting this blog, but I have a valid excuse!

Last night, at about 9:30, I was just about to start writing it, but first decided to think about what I might be writing. Then, like you, I simply fell asleep!

But I'm wide awake now, 24 hours later, and newly enthused by a touching reader's comment on last week's post!

"This really is a confusing blog," said young reader Alicia. "I'm going to try to forget that I even read it."

Trust me, Alicia--I don't even remember who wrote it!

Jimi Hendrix: Valleys Of Neptune, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland, First Rays Of The New Rising Sun (all on Experience Hendrix/Legacy)  I remember when I was back working at Billboard a millennium ago and wrote a piece pointing out that even back then I owned maybe five different versions of Hendrix's classic Electric Ladyland, all of which theoretically sounded better than the last, and I wondered how many more would come before they got it right.

  • New album releases by old-timers like Peter Gabriel and John Hiatt battle it out with newcomers like Jason Derülo and Danny Gokey this week--and one thing is clear!

Because these releases are either inanimate objects or data files, it's unlikely either side will be able to do much of anything, let alone fight!

So let's simply be arbitrary! Peter Gabriel and John Hiatt are dependable artists! And this Derülo guy has umlauts in his name! Look out, databases! And to be frank, Danny Gokey lost when he was on American Idol! Talk about double jeopardy!

    Case closed!

Eventually I plan to be a lawyer!

Peter Gabriel: Scratch My Back (Virgin)  Out of the public eye for several years now, former lead singer of Genesis Peter Gabriel returns with an album of cover songs from a variety of artists, including Lou Reed, Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Paul Simon, David Bowie, and other respected writers! Yet the absence of Slim Harpo, whose classic "Scratch My Back" would birth an entire counterculture in

  • 'Iron Man 3' races past $1 billion dollar mark on monster foreign take

By Todd Cunningham LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Iron Man 3" was soaring past $1 billion at the worldwide box office Thursday, in a display of world domination that would make one of Marvel's super villains proud. The box-office bounty - roughly $700 million from abroad and $300 million domestically - is a major triumph for Disney, which bet big on comic book superheroes when it bought Marvel Studios for $4 billion in 2009. And its decision to bring aboard a Chinese partner for "Iron Man 3" and focus the Disney marketing machine on the booming foreign market looks pretty good right now, too. ...
