New This Week
  • Vampire Not Weakened!

Well, vacation's over, the warm holiday buzz has receded, and as we look at this week's new album releases, there's a definite trend to be seen.

Some can be found in record stores! Others in large department stores! And still others via Internet retail services!

In short, now more than ever, everything is commercially available! So if any of these records don't make it to the top of the charts, there are no excuses to be had: They simply must not be any good!

    Next week: Socialism explained!

Vampire Weekend: Contra (XL)  Well, I don't actually have a copy of the new Vampire Weekend CD--like many of you I simply went to their website and streamed it repeatedly, glanced at the cover artwork and wondered about it, heard my fill of it, then went to a record store to buy something I never heard before! What a deal! From what I heard of it, though, it sounded pretty groovy--less like Graceland and more like Here Comes Rhymin' Simon! It's light on the afro-pop; guess they realized they were

    Happy New Year!

Two weeks away from the rigors of penning a thought-provoking essay on the week's best new album releases has likely done me--and thus you--a world of good!

Why? Because my New Year's resolution, as of this very moment, is to shy away from writing this blog in a smarmy and snarky manner, to start telling it like it is no matter whose feelings might get hurt, and, most importantly, to stop leaving secret messages via the last word of every seventh album review in this blog for the past 48 weeks and just have some fun!

    Won't you join me?

Ke$ha: Animal (RCA)  The whole world is talking about Ke$ha at the moment--largely because non-American writers can't find that wacky "dollar sign" key to write about her! But that's not the only reason! The charming American singer has already been widely heard via her vocal on Flo Rida's "Right Round," and she's just set a new download record with her hot single "TiK ToK"--which has received conspicuous placement in such shows as

As we get closer and closer to year-end and new releases reduce to a damp trickle--a half-hearted EP here, an unwanted box set there--there's really nothing new worth writing about at all!

But as the authoritative logo next to the stylish Stephen King photo above proclaims, this blog is entitled New This Week! And I don't want to let the entire Internet down!

So consider this week's posting something of a cheat: two new releases mixed with other "newish" albums issued sometime in the past few months or so, albums I didn't write about because I didn't yet have them or, more likely, because reviews of albums featuring Timbaland or Kanye West actually score me 3 cents per unique user, and I don't even have to listen to those!

You should see my new TV!

Alicia Keys: The Element Of Freedom (MBK/J)  Certainly the week's hottest new release, Ms. Keys' fourth studio album is much anticipated by many and likely to scamper up the charts rapidly--as she's quite talented, musically proficient,

  • I think it's clear we owe the rap world an apology!

All this time, "haters," as they're called, have pointed accusatory fingers at the genre as a whole, proclaiming its most famous celebrants as merely being in it for the money--bragging about their wealth, about having so much money they can't fold it, about simply being inherently superior to poor suckers such as ourselves who simply don't have it together as conspicuously as they do!

And yet here it is, short weeks before Christmas, and sure enough, like clockwork, with days to spare, they've all managed to complete their ambitious projects--after months of working hard to produced polished jewels to meet their personal deadlines!

I mean, it's not as if they were all in the studio looking at their spectacular wristwatches and saying, "Dang, we better finish this mess by the end of Q4 to maximize our personal profits! Gimme that mic and let's get outta here!"

Nope! Likely as not, they were in a hurry to shop for Christmas presents

  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday just came and went, so that must mean we've just hit Trashy, Tawdry, Two-Bit or Terrible Tuesday! Take your pick!

That's right! From now until the end of the year, album releases that didn't already hit the stores in time for the Thanksgiving weekend are either second-rate cash-ins, "problem releases" that couldn't make a simple deadline--or, sadly, simply unfortunate!

Yep, like everyone else in the world, I just did all my holiday shopping last weekend, so there's no chance I'll be buying anything else!

However, in the interest of fairness, what say we give this week's new releases a quick once-over before we decide they're of no value whatsoever?

Allison Iraheta: Just Like You (19/Jive)  Let's say you're at college and you have a brand new roommate from Indonesia who's a real music fan! By the end of the semester, like it or not, you're going to have opinions about artists you never even knew existed last year! And so it is that I, too, have developed

    Music: It's cheaper than ever!

Back when I was a wee lad, I used to save my spare change so I could rush out to my favorite record store and, for the grand sum of $10, pick out my choice of three brand new vinyl albums!

But pretty soon, prices started going up, CDs were introduced, and atmospheric mall stores started offering CD versions of the same albums I'd picked up for $3.33 for maybe $18 or so!

Luckily, they all went out of business!

And now, in an intriguing twist, record labels are getting so desperate to release albums that reach the top of the charts that they're charging just $3.99 for certain "high profile" new releases! Like the latest by Bon Jovi, which just hit No. 1! And this week's new releases by Rihanna and Adam Lambert! Maybe they'll be No. 1's too!

Of course, the cheap versions of these new releases are only available briefly and, more importantly, just as downloads, not physical objects! So don't worry! They're not even real!

A healthy array of new releases makes this one of the best new album release weeks in memory!

With returning superstars, exciting new artists, welcome reissues, and the newest batch of American Idol humans, it's time to stop wondering whether you've outgrown the music business and really prefer computers--and instead put your money where your mouth is!

Additionally, once buying these exciting new releases, you can actually play some of them, if you'd like!

As always, though, if unopened, they serve equally well as pure art objects!

Them Crooked Vultures: Them Crooked Vultures (Interscope)  Why not start off with this week's biggest new surprise--a so-called "supergroup" that unexpectedly delivers the goods and doesn't work for Pizza Hut! Consisting of Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, head Queen Of The Stoneage Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin's bass legend John Paul Jones, this unlikely trio takes its cues from Homme's better QOTSA moments and, with the super-duper rhythm section provided by

  • The Bonnest Jovi Yet!

It's the week when all the "big guns" start arriving--when labels pull out all the stops and issue albums by artists they know stand the biggest chance of bringing in big bucks!

So whether it's a brand new album, a commemorative box set, a live DVD, or a special-deluxe-super-spectacular-limited-edition version of an album also available on the cheap--hey, why take chances?--it's a sure sign that somebody somewhere assumes these are titles that the entire world is clamoring for!

    Naturally, they're all really good!

Bon Jovi: The Circle/When We Were Beautiful  (CD/DVD) (Island/Def Jam)  Far be it from me to suggest I am totally mystified why this fascinatingly mediocre band continues to exist, sell records and concert tickets, strike up lucrative deals with struggling television networks, and actively tout that they've sold "more than 120 million records"! Perhaps it's their hair! But as this fab disc's opening track "We Weren't Born To Follow" makes abundantly clear, rules were made to

  • Carrie OK!

A wealth of new releases arrives in the stores this week, as record labels proudly unveil product by some of the biggest names in the music business!

And while it's true that there are contemporary bestsellers represented--this week by Carrie Underwood, Weezer and Slayer--there are a significant number of past superstars in the racks as well!

Among the most conspicuous? Grunge's biggest superstars, Nirvana and the Bee Gees!

Additionally, other people have released records!

    Imagine!

Carrie Underwood: Play On (19/Arista Nashville)  While some maintain that the former American Idol winner and country music superstar occasionally veers a little too close to pop on songs like "Cowboy Casanova," few can deny that the lass has a heart of gold and talent to match! Her latest album should take her to the stratosphere--figuratively speaking--if only for the spectacular song selection, the one-of-a-kind philosophical conundrums taken on by such bold songs as "Songs Like This," and the nice

  • This Is It? Promise?

The problem with writing a wrap-up of each week's new releases means that sometimes things fall through the cracks!

Even though like many in my profession I receive 2,000-3,000 free CDs a week and diligently listen to each and every one of them--sometimes I don't get the ones I want most!

Yes, horrible as it sounds, I am on occasion forced to...buy them!

This week, in the midst of many of your likely favorites, I will insert two such albums-- which means that at least for this week, this title of this highly lauded blog might best be amended to NEW THIS WEEK...FOR ME!

    Spot them and win big!

Michael Jackson: The Music That Inspired The Movie Michael Jackson's This Is It (Sony Music)  Those seeking to buy the only new tracks on this collection--a grand total of two, including "This Is It" and the stunning contrast that is "This Is It (Orchestra Version)"--won't be able to purchase them without buying this entire collection of repackaged hits! But that's cool! Now's your chance to
