New This Week
  • Pearl Jam, Jelly Tight!

I'd like to start this week's blog off with a heartfelt apology to fans of Megadeth, whose new album I inadvertently forgot to mention last week! Oops!

I understand it's very good--and that there's no truth to the rumor that it's a stunning departure into faux bluegrass, R&B and the early works of the Undertones! At least, that's what I gather from speaking with one of my friends who lives with a member of the band!

If I only had it in my hands, and could look at the cover and read the credits, then I could tell you the whole story and you could read it here first!

But it would be unthinkable to offer an opinion otherwise!

That said, word is that one side of the CD is silver-colored and shiny!

Pearl Jam: Backspacer (Monkeywrench)  One of the more impressive aspects of Pearl Jam in retrospect is that nobody has really burned out on them! The group's general aversion to music videos, press interviews, and most of the star-making machinery that has chewed up and spit out nearly all of

  • Welcome to New This Week--the exciting blog which details the week's hottest new releases, points out which ones are worth purchasing and which are worth ignoring, and does so in a friendly, highly readable format.

While this week seems better than the norm--and seasonally, it's to be expected during this Back To School month--it does have one major failing.

Unfortunately, neither Taylor Swift nor Beyonce have new releases this week, so there's no possible way to justifiably imply one being superior to the other.

But on the bright side: The playing field is level, and true quality can be our guide.

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson: Break Up (Atco/Rhino)  This unexpectedly delightful pairing teams Yorn, a respected singer/songwriter, with actress/singer Johansson, whose prior solo album of Tom Waits covers took a few critical blows unjustifiably, in my opinion, and comes up a complete winner. The duo harmonize well, Johansson sings in a slightly higher

  • All That Jay-Z!

Wow! I don't ordinarily write two of these blogs in one week--it's hard work!--but I just heard from reputable sources that this blog, originally planned for next week, has leaked!

That's right--apparently people all over the world have somehow found a copy and are trading it over the Internet! Even now!

So as a special service to my regular readers--the ones who have stood by me through thick and thin--and to curtail what may well be abbreviated blog sales were I to post this when I originally desired, I'm posting it right now instead!

Apologies if it covers this week's new releases instead of next week's--but yesterday's Beatles blog took a lot out of me, and I was planning on being a week late!

    Imagine that!

Jay-Z: The Blueprint 3 (Roc Nation)  I knew this was going to be a big album when I saw an ad for it on Comedy Central, saw that it was going to safely carry the Blueprint name yet again, and saw that rappin' dude Jay was getting less than the total attention he probably

  • This week's biggest news, of course, is the long-awaited release of the Beatles catalog in newly remastered versions--as individual albums, boxed together in expensive stereo and mono complete sets, and in the unexpected music videogame format--which will introduce the famous quartet's music to an entirely new generation, and an actual music videogame to one much older.

Few would argue that this is a bad thing.

As an additional by-product of the Beatles release, it's likely a significant number of people may want to go to "a record store" for the first time in several years. And they may be slightly chagrinned to discover there aren't very many left.

Look for that videogame next Christmas.

The Beatles: Please Please Me, With The Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles (The White Album), Abbey Road, Let It Be, Past Masters (all Apple/Capitol/EMI)  It would be incredibly

  • I am peculiarly fascinated by the release of this week's new album by Whitney Houston!

This because I believe her entire career has been based on the number of records she can sell!

I remember back in the old days, before her first album came out, when her label sent out an expensive calendar featuring Whitney in many rather enticing poses; it was the first indicator that they had planned on spending an extraordinary amount of money on this artist! They did not do this for the A's, D.L. Byron, the Sports or the Thompson Twins!

And yes, she sold lots and lots of records! In fact, she's famous for it!

So if this new album doesn't sell lots of records--because, after all, that's what she's famous for--it must mean her new album is very bad!

Sometimes record companies make this stuff easy!

Whitney Houston: I Look To You (Arista)  Aside from the fact that she has sold lots of records, what meaning does Whitney Houston have for me, a human? Well, she sang "Memories," an old Soft Machine

  • What A Heap!

It's a solid week for new album releases--as newer artists such as the Arctic Monkeys and Imogen Heap return triumphantly, old masters such as Smokey Robinson and George Benson re-emerge with solid new projects, and other people put out other stuff!

Thus, those who've been predicting bad fortune for the music industry, dismissing it as an old and tired business model that's had its day, have been proven completely wrong!

Next week: New releases by the Flying Pigs, That'll Be The Day, Don't Look Now, and We're Frickin' Doomed should bode equally as well!

Imogen Heap: Ellipse (Megaphonic/RCA)  There's been a big to-do about how Ms. Heap, onetime member of Frou Frou, has invested so much personal time in the marketing of this brand new project that it's now contextualizing the future of the artist's role in the industry! Frankly, that's quite a bit of unnecessary hot air--as the real story is right there for all of us to see on her new album's cover: Imogen has befriended an

  • Reba Leba Fa Fa Fa!

When I compile my weekly list of the new releases most deserving your attention, it's often a simple exercise in addition and subtraction!

First I jot down the name of every album I feel is the slightest bit worthy of special attention! Then, carefully, I draw a line through each and every one that--when push comes to shove--really isn't worth my time or yours!

But every week, however miraculously, enough names can be removed to finally leave only the very best for your perusal!

Sadly, after doing that this week, I only ended up with four albums! So I threw some other junk in and hope you won't notice!

Reba McEntire: Keep On Lovin' You (Valory)  The first album in six years from country goddess Reba McEntire shows an unexpected spunk and verve that some experts attribute to the singer's recent road forays with American Idol star Kelly Clarkson! It's, like, "sassy"! It's hard not to wish the best for McEntire--just as it's hard to stop fantasizing about the mysterious arrival of an

  • Woodstock Market!

A batch of welcome, unexpected reissues makes this week one of the year's best release weeks ever!

True, someone might take a look at some of the recordings below and note, My, how odd, a significant number of the spotlighted releases appear to be by well-established, sometimes legendary and sometimes dead artists rather than current label signings!

On the other hand, others might say, Wow, that newly signed Jessie James looks like she's gonna sound great!

But, as always, there's enough to go around for everyone!

So there's no point in thinking absolutely nothing of any interest is being released anymore! Because now that Soundscan is going to start considering T-shirts albums...everything has changed!

Various Artists: Woodstock --40 Years On: Back To Yasgur's Farm (Rhino)  Speaking of clothes, hats off to Rhino Records for one of the finest reissues in memory! On the heels of the 40th anniversary of the original Woodstock Festival--that historic moment when everything peaked and

  • I'm pretty excited as I write this, and I'll bet you would be, too!

Why? In about 10 hours, on Tuesday morning, I'll be at the dentist's office getting a root canal!

The down side? Maybe it'll hurt! The up side? It may be more fun than listening to this week's new releases! Either way, sleep enters the picture!

Modest Mouse: No One's First And You're Next (Epic)  It's a great week when a budget-priced release of also-ran tracks and B-sides by a "platinum-selling" "alternative rock" "band" is the hottest release, but with an album cover like this, who wouldn't want to pick it up? Featuring "newly recorded" songs from the We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank and Good News For People Who Love Bad News sessions and a couple of "rare" b-sides, this can only be a prelude for their long anticipated next real record, provisionally entitled We Like To Use Excessive Quotation Marks To Denote Irony Because Frankly It Disturbs Us That Some People Out There Are Waiting For Us To Record "Here I

  • It's a less than exciting week as far as new album releases go--probably because most of America was wrapped up watching the first episode from the new season of Doctor Who on BBC America!

Other theories abound, however! Perhaps the labels issued all their "good" releases during the first half of the year and have now hit the bottom of the barrel! And unexpectedly, everyone there still has jobs! So now what? Big mistake!

Some have even suggested that this week's new releases are in fact the best records ever--and those of us who don't think so simply have no business writing about music!

That's all nonsense, of course! According to several informed sources, the releases originally scheduled for this week--the ones that would literally make or break the sales year for the entire industry--were mistakenly left in a warehouse in Terre Haute, Indiana due to computer error!

Just wait 'til next week's Hooters album!
