New This Week
  • Girls, Girls, Girls!

After writing over a hundred of these blogs, I thought it was time for a change!

And what better way to make that change than to write it on a brand new computer? Better yet, how about writing it in a completely remodeled office--one which, in California's exotic San Fernando Valley, is now fully air-conditioned and the very picture of writerly comfort?

That's right! After two years of writing this much-acclaimed blog--with sweat rolling down my back, smoke getting in my eyes, and impatience rearing its ugly head every time I'd see an album credit featuring Will.i.am, Kanye West or Timbaland--I can now kick back, cool my bare feet on this wonderful new tile floor, and let my critical acumen fly!

And as a special bonus? I finally bought a CD player!

Demi Lovato: Here We Go Again (Hollywood)  Even Demi thinks it's great she's back! Despite the stylish cover photo, the pretty young starlet probably doesn't want to keep this new album a secret! Working with exciting songwriters like

  • The Triumph Of Rock!

It's a rock 'n' roll showdown beyond belief!

In this corner we've got the brand new album by Daughtry, the shaven-headed rocker launched by American Idol whose previous album was a massive commercial smash!

And in the other? None other than the Dead Weather, the new band featuring Jack White of the White Stripes--a band whose very existence seems the antithesis of the formulated pap regularly popularized by the monstrous American Idol machine!

Who rocks the best? Who rocks the hardest? Whose free-spirited grasp of all that rock 'n' roll entails will resonate the most with the American Heartland?

I mean, like, aside from Gene Simmons?

The Dead Weather: Horehound (Third Man)  Considering the players involved--Jack White of the White Stripes, Alison Mosshart of the Kills, Dean Fertita of Queens Of The Stoneage, and Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs--it's no wonder some people are calling the Dead Weather a great new supergroup! But two questions remain! First, what the heck is a

  • Hey--did you notice when it happened?

Last Sunday--the 5th of July--the moment that music fans old and young have been discussing since the days of Elvis Presley's heyday finally came!

That's right! As if to finally shut up all those opinionated geezers whose theories about music have been making most of us ill for years, it happened!

At about 2 p.m. Pacific time--I live in Los Angeles, I should point out--music was...the best it ever was! And from that point forward, everything started going downhill!

As you may suspect, the actual slope of its decline may be the single biggest issue facing the music industry, but, like you, I find that kind of stuff boring!

For me, it happened when I was reaching for the new album by Billy Boy On Poison! I didn't actually get to hear it at that point, but the CD was on its way to my player, about to be inserted, literally filled with promise, and then--BING!--it happened!

And when I heard it? It was good, but not great!

Guess we'd better get used to

  • I suggest you fasten your safety belts and get ready for a summer of retrospection!

For indeed--between books arriving in the mail and phone calls from record company publicists, all signs indicate that this coming August will bring us the best 40th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival we've ever experienced!

If you're not aware, the original Woodstock Festival, held in upstate New York during the summer of 1969, was an historic event in which teenagers and festival-goers in their early 20s signed a pact asserting that their music, their generation, and their political ideals represented all that mankind could and ever would aspire to! It was great, and pretty significant! Later, after rolling around in the mud a little, they drove home, got jobs, started losing their hair, created heavy metal and bought widescreen TVs!

    Others, of course, tragically perished!

It was a pretty special time!

  • Dream On And On And On!

Wow! What an occasion! Please join me in celebrating this special 100th edition of New This Week--the much-loved blog that can only be written after repeated viewings of Yo-Yo Sexy Girl Cop and a vast influx of carbonated cola product!

What have I learned after supplying you, the reader, with all this fabulous content?

    1) Many of you do not think the Jonas Brothers are the New Beatles!

    2) Many of you do not agree that in some ways Led Zeppelin is better than Nickelback!

    3) As always, I should continue to aspire to winning over readers who make such comments as "You like Teena Marie? You're either gay or have no taste in music."

    4) And, finally, I believe I may actually have peaked as a writer in 2007 with my thought-provoking battle royale: "Soulja Boy Vs. Springsteen!"

Luckily, thanks to your continued encouragement, I'll simply keep at it--telling it like it is, in no uncertain terms, and making or breaking artists' entire careers with one well-placed keystroke!

    Hey, do you have my

  • It seems like only weeks ago that the Jonas Brothers released a new album--but thankfully, just as the iconic and best-loved bands of the '60s managed to release three albums in one year, here comes their new one!

Yes, in many ways, today's music scene recalls the glory days of eras long past!

For starters, the Jonas Brothers are brothers! Just like the Everly Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, the Statler Brothers and the Blues Brothers!

Secondly, like many of the '60s' best bands, they've recorded an album and are offering it for sale!

Finally--and I suspect this is the clincher--by all reports, it's audible!

Who says you can never go home again?

Jonas Brothers: Lines, Vines And Trying Times (Hollywood)  I think most of us are predisposed toward liking the Jonas Brothers, especially since that video popped up featuring one of the guys dancing like Beyonce! And most of us also realize that one-time teen idols, as they mature, may want to take a firmer hold of their careers and start

  • Peas And Thank You!

It's a healthy week for new releases, as some of today's best and brightest new artists mix it up with welcome returns from veterans like Teena Marie, Sonic Youth and Iron Maiden!

Unfortunately, it appears that precisely what these artists are mixing up may not be what we anticipated!

In an unexpected twist, most of them have gathered in the kitchen and are making a great big bundt cake!

"Frankly, we all just like that cake's name," confided one artist who shall remain nameless but plays in a famous heavy metal band and has a pilot's license. "Have you seen the spatula?"

Also there's a new Black Eyed Peas album!

Black Eyed Peas: The E.N.D. (A&M/Interscope)  I don't think anyone would have suspected a few years back that the Black Eyed Peas would be releasing one of the year's most anticipated albums, but with the smash success of their #1 hit "Boom Boom Pow," the much-loved combo now seems a stronger commercial entity than ever! While it's too soon to decide whether any track here

  • I believe that a significant number of excellent albums continue to be released year after year, and that music today is as good as it ever was!

At the same time, those excellent albums aren't necessarily recognized either commercially--i.e. they rarely sell--or, for the most part, critically.

    But that's OK!

I say this only because as I make a checklist of this week's 10 most noteworthy releases, I must note with some chagrin that literally half of them contain music that was recorded many years ago! Or by artists who've been around for years!

That being said, I'd like to put a positive spin on all this. The newer artists? They're all exceedingly well-groomed!

Neil Young: Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972)  Believe it or not, after all these years of promises and postponements, this is finally the week the first volume of Neil Young's multi-disc career retrospective hits the street! And what a package! Available as an 8 CD set or a 10-disc DVD or a 10-disc Blu-ray set--depending

  • If you're a regular reader of this blog--and who isn't?--you may have noticed a few readers persistently comment that I "don't even listen to the albums" and "just look at the covers" before writing my reviews!

You'd be correct if you were to assume that I find such comments deeply offensive!

So to set the record straight--and I'll only mention this once, then never bring it up again--such statements are patently untrue!

I only sometimes look at the covers!

Marilyn Manson: The High End Of Low (Interscope)  One of the most compelling and profound artists of all time--a master at self-expression with his finger on the pulse of all that really matters in this world, a guy whose impact on post-millennial culture has yet to be accurately calibrated--would probably see this album in a record store and laugh! "Wow," he'd say, "is Marilyn Manson still around?" Later he'd joke with his friends that there was a song on it called "Arma-godd**m-motherf***in-geddon" and they'd all chortle in

  • They say that music is the window into the soul!

Actually, I don't think they do, but it sounds like something they probably would say if they thought about it!

And so it is that two of this week's hottest new releases--by rapper Eminem and hip cult love goddess Tori Amos--reveal much about the current state of not only the music business but life itself! Not to mention what's considered a good album title in 2009!

In this corner, Relapse, Eminem's latest ode to the oxygen disenfranchised! And in this corner, Abnormally Attracted To Sin, Ms. Amos's latest deeply autobiographical opus!

The winner? Whatever corner of the room America keeps its television set--where everyone can watch American Idol's concluding week in relative peace and not have to interact with other bothersome humans!

    At last!

Eminem: Relapse (Interscope)  Time goes by so quickly it's hard to remember--isn't this the guy famous for hugging Elton John on TV or something? Cool! Well, it's hard to not enjoy this lovable
