New This Week
  • It was the best of times, it was the worst of times!

It was the best batch of new releases ever, it was the worst batch of new releases ever!

It was the week in which both Green Day and Ethel Merman could be mentioned in the same breath!

It was an opportunity for a writer to construct an entire record review on the basis of a CD sticker!

    And then, suddenly...it wasn't!

Green Day: 21st Century Breakdown (Reprise)  As most of their fans know very well, this Friday will see the release of the first new Green Day album since 2004's American Idiot! Will it be the best album of all time or a horrifying reminder that all that was once held sacred can be unbearably banal, verging on the profane? Will the same band that once held the Kinks' "Picture Book" conspicuously sacred return again to pay tribute to Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely" via their new track "Before The Lobotomy"? Will their eyeliner run, should they boldly choose to wear it? Now that being "green" has been adopted by the dreariest

  • When I look at many of this week's most intriguing new releases, I notice an interesting trend!

There are new albums by '70s stars the New York Dolls and Cat Stevens, a great reissue by late-'80s influential Scottish post-punk band the Vaselines, and a tribute album to iconic singer Scott Walker, who rose to fame in the mid-'60s as part of his group the Walker Brothers!

And then a bit of duller new stuff!

Far be it from me to beat a dead horse, or make portentous pronouncements about the current state of the music business, but truly, this needs to be said!

All of the above artists--that's right, every single one of them--sing in English!

It's enough to give one pause!

Ciara: Fantasy Ride (Jive)  Three things of interest occurred when I played the new Ciara album! First, I found myself liking that "Love Sex Magic" track--which wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that I later found out it features Justin Timberlake, who I don't like, so I decided it was no good! Secondly, I was

  • Though I'm not the sort of writer who responds to comments left on this blog--I mean, why mess with the riff-raff when I could be out having a steak dinner?--I do read them!

And so it was that last week, looking over the vast array of fan mail I receive, there were two comments that particularly touched my heart!

The first was from reader Tiffany Reynolds--who if her avatar is any indication, is a cartoonish figure who favors wearing a red hat! Her succinct communication? "Leave Your Comment"!

    Understood, Tiffany!

The second, even more heartwarming message came from one "joe m," who seems to favor upper case letters only in the body of his commentary: "HEY DON'T FORGET THE NEW HEAVEN AND HELL BONEHEAD"

Don't worry, Joe! You were just a week early, that's all!

Stay well, the both of you!

Bob Dylan: Together Through Life (Columbia)  The man's 46th release--which follows an album that, believe it or not, debuted at No. 1--this highly listenable disc offers further proof that when

  • It would be no exaggeration to say that this is the strongest batch of new releases I've seen since I started writing this blog in 1985!

    Well, almost!

What I like most about this week is that most of the albums refute the basic fallacy music industry doomsayers now parrot regularly: That today's albums have one or two "good tracks" and the rest is just filler! That's only true in the case of one of the albums below--guess which!--because the dude that made it is, well, a "singles" artist! Of course the rest of his stuff stinks!

So next time you hear someone using that cruddy line of logic, slap 'em down and call 'em Top 40-Loving Musical Dilettante Cheapskates With No Taste At All!

    Then steal their car!

Depeche Mode: Sounds Of The Universe (Mute)  If you would've asked me in 1981 whether I thought Depeche Mode would become one of the biggest bands in the world and still be making great records in 2009, I probably would've said, "Huh? Do I know you, buddy?" But now we've probably

  • Sometimes when I get out of bed I wonder if the world has passed me by!

First, I look at the Billboard charts and realize that it's very likely I've never even heard the No. 1 song in the nation!

Then I open up my mail and get advanced copies of albums with the words "Kiki Kaiku" on them! And when I put them in my computer I soon learn--thanks to the magic of today's technology--that "Kiki" is the name of the artist, and "Kaiku" is the name of the album! Heck, that explains everything!

Is it any wonder I feel completely out of it?

Luckily, however, I can get back on track for the simplest of reasons!

And as I sit here holding the latest album by Styx's Dennis DeYoung, I feel all warm and tingly inside!

Silversun Pickups: Swoon (Dangerbird)  I'm always happy when a talented new band seems on an upward career path, and that's exactly how I felt in 1984, when Prefab Sprout released their first album, Swoon!  Coincidentally, this great LA band named their new album the same thing! It's

  • Big names are back! It's true!

After weeks of mildly interesting record releases by mildly interesting artists, today's batch of new albums could not be by more fascinating yet familiar artists!

Just take a look at these names: Neil Young! Billy Ray Cyrus! Rascal Flatts! Ramblin' Jack Elliott! Bob Mould! And, uh, Jadakiss!

It's as if the record industry as a whole suddenly woke up and realized they had no idea whose albums they were releasing--they simply weren't paying attention! So they called in the old guard! The tried-and-true!

And the so-called "troubles" the music industry has been facing? Declining sales? Decreasing market share? Hah!

    It was all a dream!

Neil Young: Fork In The Road (Reprise)  Just one of the many reasons Neil Young is such a rockin' dude is the fact that someone showed him a bunch of possible cover photos for his brand new album and he selected this one! A pulse-pounding, noisy venture that with such tracks as "Cough Up The Bucks" recalls Young's lyrical

  • He’s A Real Prince!

Wow! In the past two weeks, I've been all over! First to Austin, then to Miami, then to Las Vegas, then back to Miami, and then, finally, back home to Los Angeles!

And as a result, my critical acumen--my ability to discern which music is good and which music is bad--has never been sharper!

So as I recount this week's best and brightest new releases, realize this: At this very moment I am listening to Andras Schiff's Ludwig Van Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas Vol. V! Therefore my sensibilities are almost painfully attuned to genius!

Thus, more than ever before, what I say goes!

Flo Rida: R.O.O.T.S. (Route Of Overcoming The Struggle) (Poe Boy/Atlantic)  As a special tribute to my home state, I'd like to begin by mentioning the latest album by Flo Rida, the man who's already sold so many downloads of his singles, no one ever would think to buy his actual album--because they've already got all the good stuff! Cool! As always, I think the man deserves incredible respect for offering us an

  • There's something to be said for being a creature of habit! Every week when I write this award-winning blog, I'm usually perched atop my favorite chair, sitting in my garage and surrounded by billions of CDs, LPs, and unlabeled videocassettes of questionable origin, drinking gallons of Diet Coke and worse!

This week, however, in a stunning turn of events, I am seated at a gawdawful Starbucks on Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami, Florida, desperately trying to focus on the week's latest releases--and find myself being distracted by a nonstop, in-house playlist featuring old jazz ladies from the '40s, Nat "King" Cole, and hundreds of other artists who have probably never even heard of Mastodon!

Well, to quote the old lady now chirping over the Starbucks sound system, guess it's "just one of those things"!

Heck! I want to be an actual coffeehouse!

The Decemberists: The Hazards Of Love (Capitol) Having just seen these lovable Portlanders performing this brand new album in its entirety at

  • For every week that brings exciting new releases--albums you know you'd just like to rush out and buy, if in fact you had any money--there are weeks like this one!

Indeed, while many of this week's newest recordings are excellent, and in some cases quite fine, still--there is nothing here that reaches out, grabs your nose and commands: BUY ME!

    Well, except for maybe one!

Can you guess which one I mean?

White Lies: How To Lose My Life (Geffen)  While I have my qualms about starting this week's blog with the debut album by a British band you may have never heard of, I'm heeding the words of the distinguished ARTROCKER magazine--surely you've heard of it--which has ominously warned "Bypass this band at your peril"! Heck, sounds like they know what they're talking about! Since this album debuted at #1 in the UK, you can bet your boots it'll do the same here, since as a rule America is just like England! And just like those British kooks, we're all enraptured by bands whose sound oddly

  • If I were a really cynical sort of fellow, I might take a look at this week's hot new releases and say, "Wow, a bunch of former American Idol singers, some High School Musical kid, a one-time grunge superstar now apparently floundering at the hands of the omnipresent Timbaland, a fading emo band produced by a member of the suspiciously reunited Blink-182, a formerly hot British band  who've lost the knack for writing good pop songs, and a pair of R&B dudes famous for either writing other people's material or having one former hit single! How exciting can it get?"

Happily, though, I'm a very cheerful and well-adjusted music critic eager to embrace all that's new and happening!

So don't worry! I'm thinking this is one heck of an exciting batch of new releases! Like you, I'm rooting for all of them!

Kelly Clarkson: All I Ever Wanted (RCA)  I would definitely say Kelly Clarkson is my all-time favorite American Idol singer, mostly because I thought she was pretty good when I saw her in
