New This Week
  • Down With Duffy!

It may just be my imagination, but it seems like women are dominating the music scene like never before!

    How so?

    1) We're already seeing a battle for the top of the charts by Madonna, Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis.

    2) The biggest headline-grabber of the past year has been wayward UK chanteuse Amy Winehouse.

    3) A non-stop flow of female "next big things" has brought us Winehouse, KT Tunstall, Corinne Baily Rae, Kate Nash and--coming soon--Katy Perry, Adele, and now--drum roll please--this week's latest entry, Duffy!

So the question arises: Is there some sort of sea change afoot in the industry, or has it all just been a peculiar coincidence?

    Remarkably, neither.

    I'm just noticing them more!

It's my issue, let me deal with it!

Duffy: Rockferry (Mercury ) She's all over the top of the charts in the UK, bless her--and she's perky, cute, fresh, wholesome, and a synthesized combination of 75 percent Dusty Springfield and 25 percent Amy Winehouse!  She's got help from illustrious Brits such

It isn't every week that we're gifted with new albums by Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis and Clay Aiken!

Throw in that new live album by Josh Groban, put 'em all in the CD changer, get the Jacuzzi warmed up, and guys--if you play your cards right--a night of hot romance is guaranteed to be yours!

Oh, excuse me--I've confused this blog with my other, better-trafficked one about personal relationships!

In that case, let me assure this blog's worthy readership that next week's release of Iron Maiden's Best Of 1980-1989 kicks royal butt! And that Limp Bizkt DVD will blow everybody's mind!

Neil Diamond: Home Before Dark (Columbia) The quintessential rockin' dude, Mr. Diamond has had his career significantly revved up by producer and label honcho Rick Rubin--who in the course of two records has given the distinguished songwriter a fluff-free setting that displays him in the finest light possible. I don't want to over-emphasize the man's impact on American culture, but get this: Mere seconds

  • Those keeping track of the album charts lately may unwittingly see the big story as being who reaches the No. 1 spot--and little else.

One week it's Leona Lewis, the next it's Mariah Carey, and who knows? Maybe next week it'll be Madonna.

But there's a bigger picture, too. Like...maybe the rest of the new albums released--how to say this politely?--all stink!

So believe it or not, this is pretty much a banner week of new releases! I haven't seen this many good new albums on sale since all the record stores in LA went out of business!

Who knows? I may even buy one with this generous tax rebate we're all receiving! Or at least download a track!

Madonna: Hard Candy (Warner Brothers) Ah, well, c'mon. I love Madonna! First of all she's good looking! Secondly, she makes records! Third of all, she's photographed in unladylike positions for their cover! What more could anyone want? That being said, though, I'm a little concerned. I usually make jokes about artists beating each other up to

  • Volcanic Ashlee!

I'm the last guy in the world to sit around sobbing that all the best music was made years ago. After all, 20 years ago, there was no Nickelback or 3 Doors Down! Plus, Soulja Boy was probably not even around then!

Still, when I look at this week's fabulous new releases, I'm chagrined to report that almost half of this week's best albums were originally recorded before Edison invented the CD!

Not only that, but there's a new Donny Osmond album!

So I think it's time we all agreed that the best music in the world has already been made--and we're just marking time until we inexorably wind our way to our inevitable deaths!

Nah, just kidding!  But it sure would be interesting reading if I meant it!

Ashlee Simpson: Bittersweet World (Geffen) Every decade an album is released that, in the years that follow, is viewed as a record that has changed life as we know it! My personal vote is going to go to this harrowing disc by aging blues singer Simpson--whose Bittersweet World includes the

Get ready for the big showdown in the next few weeks when the Battle Of The Babes really gets underway!

This week brings the debut album by England's Leona Lewis, winner of the UK's X Factor TV show, who's being trumpeted as the biggest new star since--oh, I don't know--Mariah Carey.

And next week? It's the long-awaited new album by Mariah Carey--the last big new star since Leona Lewis!

Many suspect the first singer to clue her audience into the fact that energy equals mass times the velocity of light squared will be the big winner!

We'll just have to wait and see!

Leona Lewis: Spirit (J Records) A great singer, something of a looker, and one of very few UK female artists to reach No. 1 here with her very first single, Leona Lewis would appear to have it all! Conspicuously being promoted by her starmaker label legend Clive Davis--who's pretty good at promoting this stuff--and famed TV types like Simon Cowell, it's likely that 2008 will be Leona Lewis's year. Unless--some have

New albums from the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, R.E.M., Willie Nelson and George Michael highlight this week's new releases--further proving that a celestial accident has hurled our planet backward in time 20 full years!

Luckily, additional new releases by people with ties to American Idol and brand new songs like "Killing You Hoes" may indicate that the backward time-travel theory is completely false and that all's right with the world!

Sometimes just staying home and watching TV is the way to go, people!

R.E.M.: Accelerate (Warner Brothers) It's hard not to admire what this legendary alternative rock band stands for, politically, musically, and as an acronym for "rapid eye movement"--and I'd be the last guy to want to poke holes in an entire generation's heroes. So instead, let's just say that this record is an "upbeat rock album." It has a nice cover. "I'm Gonna DJ," the album's closer, certainly is memorable. And I find that combining one-third part vegetable oil with

  • It's a revealing week of new releases, as some of today's hottest big names--like Gnarls Barkley and Panic! At The Disco--go head-to-head against familiar names like the B-52's, the Lemonheads, Pennywise, and even the Counting Crows!

Luckily, all these artists are only battling in terms of record sales instead of an actual fistfight or rumble--which would not only be unpleasant but likely cause a stir!

That being said, though, I wonder: Don't you think if Panic! At The Disco and Gnarls Barkely actually were double-teamed against Pennywise and the Counting Crows on a televised national wrestling match, it would not only be fun to watch but actually help boost their record sales?

I do. So why won't they do it? Are they afraid to?

    Just askin'!

Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple (Downtown/Atlantic) Released early due to popular demand--that is, shoved out by their record company ASAP to counteract that pesky "internet leak" thing--this could be the make-or-break effort for a band whose one

  • Whew! After spending the past week in Austin, Texas at the annual South By Southwest music convention--where 3 million artists played one note simultaneously for four consecutive days--I'm sure glad to be back home!

Not just because I'm tired of being jostled around every minute by sweaty youths who smell of smoke and alcohol.

Not just because of the fact that of the 3 million artists who played, only 17 of them were any good.

And not just because I saw nearly every person I've ever met in less than 24 hours.

Nope. I'm just glad I found my house. I went down the street to Rite-Aid a few minutes ago and got lost!

Danity Kane: Welcome To The Dollhouse (Bad Boy) In a world where connections often overshadow musical performance skills, where appearance and appearance alone is the single biggest factor in an artist getting any sort of major label record deal, I'm just glad that oldtimers like Danity Kane are still around cranking out major new albums while they can!  Following up their

The first fruit of the Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA) suggested truth in labeling law appears to have surfaced in many of this week's newest releases--and while most consumer advocates are indeed gratified, the results may puzzle some.

From all indications, many artists felt the proposed law covered only their new album's title and little else.

As a result, many of the week's latest discs bear revealingly candid monikers. Among the most notable: The Elephant In The Room by hefty rapper Fat Joe, The Unfairground by UK cult figure Kevin Ayers, an artist many critics hold to be tragically underrated, Dreaming Of Revenge by onetime major label/now indie artist Kaki King, and--perhaps most refreshingly--Ego Trippin' by well-known rapper Snoop Dogg.

Some sources contend that potential penalties for artists who defy the new truth in labeling rule may be embarrassing for all parties. "We heard that Rick Ross actually wanted to call his new album Thriller to cop some of the

More than a few familiar faces highlight this week's new album releases--in fact, it's fair to say they may be a bit too familiar.

Some would say it's because today's music market is skewing markedly older--teenagers aren't buying CDs, everyone's downloading music for free, videogames and DVDs offer more value for money, blah blah blah.

Others would say it's because the sale of singles is cannibalizing overall album sales. Why buy the complete album by Soulja Boy, some ask, when all anyone really needs is "Crank That (Soulja Boy)"? Older artists never have hits, so if you like 'em, it's the album or nothing, dudes!

My theory is a shade more conspiratorial--and, as those with any knowledge of fair trade practices know full well, perhaps even technically illegal:

Maybe the record companies all got together in a great big room and decided they'd make this Old Artists Week!

    It could happen!

The Black Crowes: Warpaint (Silver Arrow/Megaforce) Well this band of merry fellows certainly made
