New This Week
  • Bridges To Babylon!

Great new records by famous movie stars, completely useless greatest hits sets by artists who are barely memorable, and new discs with words like "beyondo," "babble" and "drugs" in their titles make this the greatest album release week of August 2011 yet!

That said, I must offer one caveat: Many of them can also be listened to!

Thus, this week--just to make things fun--I've decided to spend the entire night listening to Deep Purple In Concert 1970-1972 and then pretend what I'm hearing comes from the actual albums I've listed below!

Can I let you in on a little secret? As far as this blog goes, I don't think it will make the slightest difference at all!

Jeff Bridges: Jeff Bridges (Blue Note)  Let's be honest: Way too many "country"-oriented albums of late have suffered due to middling material, disturbingly slick production, and a deliberate shift toward inoffensive, middle-of-the-road lyrical concerns. I say this only because I find absolutely nothing wrong with the new Jeff Bridges

    Hello and welcome!

Apologies for being absent a week and a day, but I've justreturned from an exotic vacation to the east coast--where, tragically, my onlyconnection to the internet came via a colorful Dunkin' Donuts franchise, whichwas not exactly where I wanted to be at the precise time I'd normally bewriting last week's blog!

To compensate, I've therefore included two albums thatactually were released last week, rather than this week, and as a result, have made the title of this blog ahollow, empty lie rather than thesophisticated, descriptive tag for which it has been widely celebrated!

Still, considering that I spent part of last week attendingan actual clambake--that's right, aclambake--I'm quite sure that the trade-off will be regarded by all of us as well worth it!

Except for our friend the clam!

The Throne (KanyeWest & Jay Z): Watch The Throne(Universal Republic)  The cliché has itthat first impressions are often the truest, and so it is that when I heardthat the joint

A mixture of great new LPs, welcome returns from skilled pop practitioners, and albums with fabulous cover art highlight this week's staggering array of astoundingly tolerable new releases!

Many of them are, intriguingly, audible!

Still, if you're like me, and you're still buying albums, you probably hit the stores religiously, buy actual CDs or vinyl rather than downloads--they're more tangible that way--and then leave them lying around conspicuously, hoping that the inevitable flood of friends who always drop by--and between you and me, why can't they just leave you alone?--will see them and judge you purely by your musical taste!

And later, as you cluster around your big-screen TV, pour a random drink here and there, and discuss the latest in celebrity gossip, perhaps you'll pull one out, play it for your friends, and argue whether it was 2006 or 2007 that stands as the greatest year ever in pop music!

Of course, all of this presupposes you can pay your electric bill! But heck--who

  • Perhaps you heard about the excitement enveloping Los Angeles last weekend!

Due to much-needed roadwork, the 405 freeway--surely one ofthe most-used thoroughfares in the country--was temporarily shut down, and cityresidents were asked to stay home and avoid what might otherwise be a trafficnightmare!

But less publicized was the city's request--admittedlykept to hush-hush levels to avoid embarrassment--that residents also stay athome, wear blindfolds, and ignore what might have sounded like strangersbursting through their front doors, rushing to their bedrooms, and openingtheir dresser drawers to peruse their underthings!

One might think such an event would be so scandalous thatthe entire world would hear of it--yet incredibly, due to a farsighted pactbetween the city and Republic Records, as recompense said intruders dutifullyleft the brand new album by rockers 3 Doors Down for all residents to enjoy attheir leisure!

And now--one has to marvel at both parties' foresight--absolutelyno

  • Hello and welcome to this very special edition of New This Week!

If you noticed I forgot to write a post last week, you're not alone! I tried my hardest, but after spending 15 minutes trying to write something interesting about spectacularly-named R&B artist Lloyd--who, tragically, was the single artist of note to release any product whatsoever last week, but who went uncovered because I couldn't manage to track down his last name--I decided to give myself, and you, a break and finally watch the fourth season of 24, which had been sitting on my shelf for a few years now!

Besides, I reasoned, why should I waste the 200th post of New This Week on a bunch of artists I'd only make fun of? I didn't spend the past four years reviewing 2,000 albums in spectacular depth and detail only to peter out half-heartedly with a lame joke about some television show starring Jeff Bridges' dad!

Plus, I had to go pick up my pants at the dry cleaners!

  • In a stunning tactical switch, this week's New This Week post is being written while listening to two of the albums under discussion!

And you know what? It's actually kind of weird to listen to this stuff!

However, considering each album's comparative importance in the world of rock 'n' roll, how could I not give each one the critical listening it surely deserves?

Shall I cut to the chase? When the new Limp Bizkit album is dropped on concrete tile, it emits a fairly anonymous, sharp "CKKK" sound--much like, say, that of a standard CD-R one might accidentally drop while copying a friend's CD collection!

On the other hand, the latest Taking Back Sunday CD repeatedly sounds like "THHHMMPP" no matter how many times it hits my office rug! And it's kind of catchy!

    Covers? They're both fantastic!

Beyoncé: 4 (Columbia)  Word is that the lovely Beyoncé recorded more than 60 songs for this new album before whittling down the finished result to 12! Apparently she lost the other 48 on her way to

Longtime readers may not realize that last week's post was an historic first for New This Week!

Not to share too much, but as a rule I write this blog every Monday night--after coming home from a hard day at work, enjoying a few TV shows, having a drink or two, and marching out to the garage, where I refuse to call it a night until I've outlined each week's best 10 new releases!

What made last week special? Namely that after writing about two albums...I completely fell asleep in my chair! And the next night, when I aimed to finish the blog, admittedly a day late, I found that I had no memory whatsoever of writing the first two entries!

And like the countless thousands who notified me via private email, I feel it represented my all-time peak as a writer!

Tonight, while I write, perhaps hoping to duplicate that feat, I am listening to the two albums by Paris--the group formed by guitarist Bob Welch upon his leaving Fleetwood Mac in the mid-'70s--and aiming to do even better!

    And just

Hi! Just came back from one of the more exotic vacations of my lifetime--I can't believe humans can actually fly if they're willing to pay enough money!--and I couldn't be more excited about this week's new album releases!

Especially if I was barely conscious!

Well-known names, superstars, rising talents, obscure bands no one's ever heard of and likely never will--who could deny that this is music's all time peak and we're living through it?

Well, maybe my friend Larry--but that's just because he reads all the Best Buy circulars every Sunday since he's really into getting a new hard drive! What say we ignore his prejudiced opinion and simply drop down the cash to purchase this week's great new hot product? And if you can't make it a tax write-off, that's your problem!

Jackie Evancho: Dream With Me (SYCO/Columbia)  I think we've all been a little taken aback by the spectacular talent displayed by young Jackie Evancho, the unbelievably cute 10-year-old who rose to fame via the best TV

  • All Time Low!

Forgive me if I'm not bursting with enthusiasm as I write this, for I'm about to take a week's vacation and, as is my nature, I've been spending hours thinking about what clothes I should pack!

But thanks to modern technology, I've absolutely no doubt whatsoever about what music I should take with me!

I've spent a good three hours this afternoon packing my iPod!

And on this trek: Albums with orange on their covers, bands that start with "D" and "S," and any British blues band that made a record between 1967-1972!

I find that when I show people my iPod, stuff like that really impresses them!

The Rosebuds: Loud Planes Fly Low (Merge)  Since everything's just about as good as everything else, why not start this week's post with my favorite album of the past few months--by North Carolina's fabulous Rosebuds? The latest in a series of deeply appealing, minor-key & quirky song collections by a couple who've had their personal ups and downs, they can be heard here tastefully baring their

Few people suspected that rock 'n' roll--a music form that was born in the early '50s and seemed to have a potentially unlimited lifespan--would actually one day peak and never again be as good as it was!

Still, that seems to be precisely the case!

For it is this week when Eddie Vedder--lead vocalist with famous Seattle-based rockers Pearl Jam--has singlehandedly made an album that will likely never be topped by any rock 'n' roll record ever to come!

    A man! A voice! A ukulele!

And while it does seem a tad beholden to famous rapper Jay-Z--I mean, these days, what doesn't?--it still shows a streak of indisputable originality that is bound to be talked about for decades to come!

May 31, 2011: The week everyone stopped buying albums and enjoyed tasty ice cream sodas in their place!

Eddie Vedder: Ukulele Songs (Monkey Wrench)  From its wrenching opening track, an energetic rendition of Tiny Tim's "Tiptoe Through The Tulips," to its heart-rending, mildly hallucinogenic closer, Don Ho's "Tiny
