  • By now, everyone is familiar with the fact that Gwyneth Paltrow can not only act--she can sing. And she can sing country, too; as evidenced by her performance on the title track to the upcoming movie Country Strong (which she also flawlessly delivered live on stage at the Country Music Association Awards last month, lest anyone think recording-studio magic might have helped her vocals out a bit).

Here's a fun little secret you're about to be let in on, though, regarding Ms. Paltrow's Nashville credibility. Gwyneth can not only croon a heartfelt ballad, she can belt out a party tune and hold her own with the best of the bad girls out there. We're delighted to premiere the video for "Shake That Thing," in which Gwynnie sings about bellying up to the bar in skintight jeans, drinking Cuervo, and making the cowboys "want it." Woo-hoo!

All I can say is, goodness gracious, what would Chris Martin think? Just kidding. This is good old-fashioned honky-tonk fun stuff, folks. Get this girl on

  • After months of speculation, gossip, and denials--it's finally a done deal. LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian are engaged to be married.

"For those who haven't read, Eddie and I got engaged over the holidays. That's the news. It's for real this time and the first time EVER!" Rimes tweeted Monday afternoon to fans.

Rimes's reference to "first time ever" refers to the numerous false alarms generated in regards to the couple's possible engagement over the past few months. While many of these were purely fan speculation (and firmly denied by Rimes), Rimes and Cibrian themselves fueled the fire by posting a staged proposal photo on Twitter Halloween weekend, showing Cibrian down on bended knee. (Rimes later explained the photo was simply meant as a joke.)

This time, it seems to certainly be no fooling around. According to People magazine, Rimes and Cibrian were spotted over the weekend on a Malibu beach, with Rimes sporting a new, 5-carat oval diamond ring.

The engagement comes as a happy

  • Oscar-winning actress Gywneth Paltrow is ending the year on a star-studded note--not only will she be starring in her latest film, Country Strong, which opens in limited release this month, she also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Monday morning. Paltrow's star marks the 2,427th awarded on the famous boulevard, and it's the final one to be presented in 2010.

Making her star ceremony doubly star-powered was the presence of her Country Strong costar, Tim McGraw, who joined her at the event. McGraw and Paltrow were in Los Angeles over the weekend to promote the film, in which Paltrow plays a fallen country star addicted to alcohol and drugs, with McGraw as her husband and manager attempting to rebuild her career.

During a press junket for the movie, McGraw praised Paltrow's hard work preparing for her role as a Nashville luminary, a persona which she had to learn basically from scratch. He also spoke highly of the authenticity of the film, which includes many scenes filmed

  • Although she's only been married a short while, Carrie Underwood already has it all figured out when she and husband Mike Fisher will be having kids. And--sorry to all of you who have switched from "wedding watch" to "baby watch"--it isn't going to be anytime soon.

This probably comes as no surprise to fans of the busy singer, whose hectic touring schedule is matched only by Fisher's time-consuming season with the Ottawa Senators hockey team. The couple will seldom even be in the same city together during the next few months. Seems easy to figure that there's just precious little time to be working on babies, right?

Well, there's that. But it isn't the main reason. According to Underwood, she's actually locked into a "pregnancy pact" she made with friends, allowing them to (hopefully) all start families together.

[Photos: Underwood's stunning red carpet moments]

"Me and a few female friends are going to try to have children around the same time," Underwood revealed Thursday in an

  • George Strait is one of those guys who needs no introduction--when you've got 50-something Number One hits, 30-something platinum albums, and a stable of massive accolades (being termed "The King Of Country" is pretty hard to top) in your quiver, people just tend to know who you are.

Now, that said, Mr. Strait is a fairly media-shy guy who doesn't make a lot of videos or grant a lot of interviews. (Yeah--we know, he doesn't HAVE to, right?) So we are totally thrilled to give fans first dibs at this clip, in which George chats about several songs off of his new album, Twang, which hits the street on 8/11. Tune in and enjoy--you'll see it first on Yahoo! Music.

If that's so and you're indeed a player--and I'm betting there's a few of you out there, so don't be shy--here's something you'll want to check out.

Ram Trucks is kicking off its first-ever "Battle of the Bands," with an eye to discover the next big thing in country music. Entering the contest is simple. All you have to do is upload a music video of your band (country, natch) to Ram's Facebook page. Voting for the best artist will be opened up to the public starting January 3, 2011.

If your video is one of the top 10 that receives the most votes by closing time (February 13), you'll move on to Round Two, which is composed of a Ram Truck panel of judges. • As any musician knows, it's a fine line walking between widespread popularity and career integrity. However, bluegrass favorites the Grascals are one of the few bands out there who've been able to enjoy the best of both worlds--critical and popular acclaim (they've won numerous awards in the bluegrass arena, as well as two Grammy nominations and one Dove Award nomination), while still remaining musically undiluted.

The band is taking this favorable position even further with the upcoming release of its newest album, The Grascals & Friends--Country Classics With A Bluegrass Spin, which features guest appearances with country-music friends old and new. Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels, Dolly Parton, Tom T. Hall, Darryl Worley, Joe Nichols and the Oak Ridge Boys all join in on the album, performing familiar classics "with a touch of grass" that will delight fans of all stripes of country as well as serious bluegrass aficionados.

It's quite a genius mix which will

  • If Sugarland's claymation Christmas video didn't put you in a holiday frame of mind, here's another little tidbit of cheer you might enjoy--and you'd have to be a total Grinch not to giggle.

Evan Taubenfeld, a singer-songwriter who formerly played guitar for Avril Lavigne, is capitalizing on the fact that a certain gorgeous blonde's last name rhymes with "gift."

Yep, all Evan wants from Santa Claus...is none other than Taylor Swift. And he's written a song about her: "Merry Swiftmas (Even Though I Celebrate Chanukah)."

Taubenfeld's lyrics to the ditty shoot down other hot celeb gals such as Megan Fox, Amy Smart, Scarlett Johansson, and Angelina Jolie, and plead only for Ms. Swift under the tree. Er, Chanukah bush, maybe?

Taubenfeld posted the song (complete with a cartoon of himself--holding a songbook with a Star of David on it) and tweeted it to Swift. Countless folks retweeted the link, and Swift herself responded with a cheerful "This makes me smile," on her Twitter page.

  • It's time for a "draft Blake" movement. And we suspect Blake already drinks a lot of draft, but you know what we mean.

Monday night's inaugural American Country Music Awards drew mixed reactions from the music industry and fans. Whatever its merits or limitations were, we do have an idea that would make for an altogether more entertaining viewing experience in year two: Fox should just get Blake Shelton to move his after-party up by a few hours and broadcast two hours of that.

For the thousand or so people who attended the late-night jam at Las Vegas' House of Blues, it was the party of the year, lasting three and a half nonstop hours with rarely a lull in the energy. Many of the artists who'd been on the ACAs a few hours earlier showed up, including Reba, Easton Corbin, the Band Perry, Luke Bryan, Jerrod Niemann, and Jason Aldean. A few who hadn't been on the show also put in appearances, including—naturally—Shelton's fiancee, Miranda Lambert, members of Lady Antebellum, and Kelly

  • Fair or not, it's a fact--the brand-new, first-ever American Country Awards, which were held Monday night, had to face down a lot of mixed reviews before they even had a chance to prove their mettle.

First off, there was the widespread discussion of whether or not yet another major country awards show was overkill--i.e., what was so special about this particular concept that it warranted production in the first place?

If questioning the show's mere existence weren't enough in and of itself, the show then caught ire from the CMT folks for claiming the title of "first and only" fan-voted awards (the CMT Awards are wholly fan-voted and have been around since 2002).

So, despite coming in with a solid roster of performers, some mildly fresh ideas (most notably, increased focus on new talent), and a fair amount of positive hype--the ACAs were already poised as underdogs from the start. Not the best place to be in, but hope remained (at least on my end) that the new program on the block
