The news on Thursday that Carrie Underwood's husband, Ottawa Senators center Mike Fisher, had been traded to the Nashville Predators naturally caused some waves in the hockey star's hometown. In fact, an Ottawa radio station even went so far as to pledge the following: It would no longer play Underwood's music. Ever again!1053 KISS FM, stated the following: Fisher's trade was "a betrayal to our community" and that the beloved player "was lured away from Ottawa by a country-music superstar."
Ooooh, them's fightin' words, right? Well, as you might imagine, this didn't go down too well with Underwood's fans.
But--what the fans apparently didn't seem to get? It was just a joke, folks. The station plays pop hits, not country. You know, like Rihanna and Bruno Mars and stuff. In other words, they wouldn't be playing Underwood anyway. Get it? Har har!
However, the station apparently received considerable flak for its little gag; enough to put up a splash page on site Friday with a large, flattering picture of Underwood and the following explanation:
"Yesterday 1053 KISSFM, home to Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas, declared a 'ban' on Carrie Underwood's music. As regular listeners we want to thank you for realizing this was our 'tongue in cheek' way of saying goodbye to Mike Fisher--as we do not play Carrie Underwood's music.
Mike was the heart and soul of the Senators and our city's finest ambassador. We will miss him and Carrie--Ottawa's first couple and wish them great success and happiness in their future.
So long Mike! Thanks for the memories!"
The station also helpfully added: "And for Carrie Underwood fans, you can hear her all the time on our sister station Y101--Today's Best Country!"
I have to admit this was a pretty amusing little joke. But also have to say--I got kind of ruffled myself before realizing the station's silly intentions.
And I say that with a wink and a grin. Congrats again, Mike, on your move to Nashville!
So, what's your opinion of the gag the Ottawa station pulled on Carrie's fans? Funny or not? Be sure to let me know what you think!
As always, be sure to:
