Mindy McCready’s Former Fiance, Dean Cain, Speaks Out On Her Suicide

McCready (Photo: Angela Weiss)We’ve already heard from one of the late Mindy McCready’s ex-boyfriends that her suicide did not come as shocking news. Now, yet another ex is on the record as saying he isn’t surprised by the country singer’s tragic death.

Lois & Clark actor Dean Cain, who was briefly engaged to McCready in 1997 (the pair broke it off in 1998) told People this week that he was “saddened” to hear of McCready’s passing, but that he’d known from the start that she was a very troubled person.

"I can't paint too pretty a picture,” Cain admitted of their relationship. “She would start arguments, start drama. Things weren't allowed to be good."

Cain says that McCready’s well-documented history of substance abuse didn’t contribute to their breakup. However, “Red flags were everywhere…I saw all the bad signs and told her to get out.”

"Everything she did was a manipulation of sorts. She would just get combative."

The actor, who was living with McCready at the time, admits he actually checked into a hotel to get away from her. After their official separation, he cut her completely out of his life, saying she was untruthful and “poisonous.”

Cain, who is the father of a 12-year-old son, told People he feels most sorry for McCready’s two young boys, calling their legacy “tragic.”

Overall, Cain believes that McCready’s death was a shame in every way. “All her troubles were self-inflicted. She had everything,” he stated. “She was a tremendous talent but everything about it was a waste."

McCready's other famous--and alleged--flame, baseball great Roger Clemens, noted on Monday that McCready's death was "sad news" and that he'd "heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life." Clemens denies any involvement with McCready, although she claims she had a long-term affair with him starting when she was a teenager. In fact, his statement on her death includes the notation that he only met her a "few times."

McCready was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home on Sunday, with a gunshot wound to the head. The death has been ruled a suicide by state investigators. Her demise comes one month after the apparently identical suicide of her boyfriend, music producer David Wilson.
