Randy Travis Formally Charged With DWI

Randy Travis (Photo: Paul Archuleta)After a very tough year, things are looking up for Randy Travis—he’s allegedly sworn off drinking and is working on regaining his health. However, that doesn’t mean he can shut the door on his tumultuous 2012. Charges were formally filed against the 53-year-old singer Wednesday for driving while intoxicated back in August.

The infamous summer incident, in which Travis crashed his car on a Texas highway—and, prior to that, entered a convenience store stark naked—yielded official results that showed his blood alcohol level at the time was nearly twice the legal limit allowed by the state.

The DWI ranks as a Class A misdemeanor, which means Travis may face up to two years in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Travis also landed in hot water the night of his accident for allegedly threatening the officers who transported him to jail. He still faces a possible retaliation charge, which counts as a third-degree felony if he’s convicted.

There’s no court date set yet for Travis. The August 7 crash was one in a series of tangles with the law—in February 2012, he was arrested for drinking in a church parking lot; and shortly after his car wreck, he was in trouble again for allegedly brawling with a man in another church lot.

Travis’s lawyer reported to the media in late November that his client has kicked the booze, is maintaining a health-oriented lifestyle, and is in the studio working on new music.
