As an unabashed fan of Reba McEntire's self-titled TV sitcom--which ran for six seasons and ended in 2007--I'm unabashedly thrilled to deliver this news: It looks like the country legend is about to deliver a new show!
"I know you've all been asking, and I can confirm that the rumors are true," McEntire posted Friday on her official site. "If everything goes like we hope it will, we'll be shooting a sitcom called Malibu Country next August!"
According to entertainment industry publication Variety, ABC has bought the script for the show. A pilot will shoot in April. The plot is described as a comedy in which McEntire plays a former singer who divorces her cheating "good ol' boy" rock-star husband. Left with no assets except a small house in Malibu, she packs up and moves from Nashville to the California coast. There, she attempts to revive her singing career, as well as keep her three kids out of trouble.
"Wooohooooo! I'm so excited about doing another TV sitcom," McEntire enthused. "I miss the Reba show so much, so it will be great to get back into the TV world again!"
Fans on McEntire's site responded positively to the news of the sitcom deal, with many commenters asking about McEntire's former costar Melissa Peterman, who played nemesis-turned-friend "Barbra Jean" on Reba. No word on whether Peterman will join the cast--but ABC, take note, it sounds like a good idea if Peterman is up for it!
Will you be watching Reba's new sitcom? I know I will be! (Just as a note, my husband made unmerciful fun of me for loving the original sitcom so much. Until I actually got him hooked on the reruns one day. Now, you didn't hear that from me...) Be sure to let me know what you think!
As always, be sure to:
