  • Stacy Francis, the 42-year-old single mother who has been an early "X Factor" favorite ever since her dramatic "Natural Woman" audition was featured in a Fox teaser promo, has one of the bigger, more elaborated-upon sob stories this "X Factor" season. A victim of a turbulent marriage to an emotional bully, some mean man who discouraged her from following her dreams and told her she was "too old," Stacy now sees "The X Factor" as her one last shot in show business. But now Stacy has suffered another personal setback: TMZ is reporting that her father has died, just as she is gearing up for a crucial stage of the competition.

According to TMZ, Stacy's father passed away two weeks ago, and she seriously considered leaving "The X Factor" to spend time with her grieving family. But she ultimately decided to soldier on, because she felt her father would not have wanted her give up. "It has been such an emotional rollercoaster for her," an unnamed source told TMZ.

    Stacy has already faltered on

  • "It's called Boot Camp for a reason," Simon Cowell intoned during the epic, commercial-free, 18-minute intro to Wednesday's episode of "The X Factor." Um, is that reason because IT IS AWESOME?

Okay, so that last sentence made no sense. Lots of things about the first episode of "X Factor" Boot Camp made no sense, really. Like when sweet blonde 14-year-old Drew Ryniewicz was forced to duet, quite creepily, on Radiohead's "Creep" with 49-year-old homeless funk-rocker Dexter Haygood. Or when singer-songwriter types like Josh Trajcik, Brendan O'Hara, and Brennin Hunt were forced to do Britney-style choreography to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" with "So You Think You Can Dance's" Brian Friedman and Mark Kanemura. (Attitudinal child rapper Brian "The Astronomical Kid" Bradley actually refused to take part, snorting, "MCs don't dance. You don't see Jay-Z dancing." He sort of had a point.) Or when Simon started actually acting nice, making me think that at any moment he was going to put

  • In the lead-up to original Idol Kelly Clarkson's salivatingly anticipated fifth (yes, FIFTH!) album, Stronger, almost an entire album's worth of multiple unauthorized song leaks have hit the Interweb, much to Kelly's aw-shucks chagrin. So with Stronger's actually release now only 19 days away, she's getting ahead of the game and leaking the album's title track herself.

"Hey ya'll--I heard that some versions of 'What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)' started showing up online. My new album Stronger is out in 3 weeks (Oct 24) and I want you to hear the real thing! Check it out!" Kelly posted this week on WhoSay.

I understand why Kelly couldn't wait till the 24th to share this killer cut with her fans. Because it's awesome. Those who were mildly underwhelmed by the more chilled-out vibe of her sleeper single "Mr. Know It All" willl adore this, because it's classic Clarkson: girl-powered chorus, remix-ready disco beats, and just enough eat-my-dust angst. It's practically "Since U Been Gone 2:

  • As a longtime Leminghead, it has caused me great pain and given me reason to doubt the existence of God that Josiah Leming, one of my all-time favorite American Idols, did not exactly rack up Underwood/Clarkson-esque sales for his one excellent Warner Bros. album, Come On Kid. (Seriously. Go buy it.) Tragically, Josiah has since been dropped by Warner amid staff shake-ups over at the label. But anyone who witnessed him in his car-dwelling Season 7 days knows he's a fighter. So fellow Lemingheads, rejoice: Josiah is back, ready to release a new album on his own.

Josiah's new single from his upcoming LP, "One Last Song," is actually not a new track at all; I first heard it last year, on an early advance copy of Come On Kid, and it immediately became one of my favorite Josiah tunes. (An acoustic version also appeared at the end of the CD, as a secret outro.) For whatever reason, the wistful drinking ballad didn't make the final version of his debut album, so I'm delighted that it's

  • When "The Sing-Off" Season 3 premiered two weeks ago--amid host Nick Lachey's frequently and incessantly repeated hype that this would be the "biggest season ever" that would "kick off a musical revolution"--I was actually disappointed. Few of the eight crews that competed on that episode truly impressed me. But then last week eight, more superior a cappella crews sang, and I got excited, convinced that the season had turned around. But now it seems like my elation was premature, based on this week's episode. Stop toying with me, "Sing-Off"!

So last night, the six crews that survived week one returned, which was a bit of a buzzkill in and of itself. But the real bummer came at the end of the night, when my favorite team, and certainly the most interesting team of the bunch, was sent home by the judges. This was the first seriously bad decision of the season, and actually one of the worst decisions in "Sing-Off" history. Usually I think Ben Folds, "the musical brain that keeps us

  • Siobhan Magnus--the glass-blowing goddess with the Edward Gorey tattoos, Courtney Love prom dresses, and otherworldy wail--was my favorite contestant of "American Idol" Season 9. I'm a big Siofan, as they say in the "Idol" world. And so it gives me great pleasure to report that Miss Magnus is back with a new video, for her co-write "Black Doll," that showcases her scary style and so-good-it's-almost-scary voice, just in time for Halloween.

In the low-budget yet high-tech clip (some of it was actually shot on an iPhone), Season 9's indie it-grrrl haunts Edward Gorey's historical house in Cape Cod and runs through a Grimm-fairytale forest, all while rocking a series of vintagey Victorian-meets-grunge nighties and Miss Havisham capes. In case there was any doubt that Siobhan is one of the coolest rock chicks to ever grace the "Idol" stage, this video ought to silence all naysayers.

What do you think of Siobhan's "Black Doll" video?
