Reality Rocks
  • You've probably tried to block it from your mind, but you may remember with a shudder that back in March of this year, Kim Kardashian attempted to follow in the Manolo-shod footsteps of fellow reality-TV starlets Paris Hilton and Heidi Montag and launch a pop "singing" career. The resulting single, "Jam (Turn It Up)," was so awful, it made Heidi sound like Adele. The song became of the butt of jokes (pun intended) by critics and tweeters alike, and Kim swiftly went about getting engaged and orchestrating a grand tabloid wedding to make us forget all about the disaster.

But as much as we'd all like to turn it down, it seems "Jam (Turn It Up)" will not go away. Though an understandable lack of interest in the song caused its accompanying music video to be shelved months ago, a one-minute snippet of the clip has now popped up online. And it's a cinematic, gorgeously shot tour de force directed by renowned VMA winner Michel Gondry that...oh, come on, who am I kidding here? AS IF.

  • Wednesday night I grieved as my favorite "America's Got Talent" contestant this season, and one of the few "AGT" contestants who had made this season even slightly exciting--that fabulous and fierce piano showman, Gaga-worshipper, and Trevor Project posterboy, Daniel Joseph Baker--was spirit-crushingly voted off. (Apparently it does not always get better, at least not when it comes to "AGT.") That was the bad news. But on the plus side, easing my pain and restoring much-needed fabulosity to the episode was the return of pantalooned, powdered-wigged wonder Prince Poppycock, aka "AGT's" most exciting contestant OF ALL TIME.

Yes, the great glam "fopera" singer, who thrilled "AGT" audiences last year with his rhapsodic "Bohemian Rhapsody," star-and-sequin-spangled "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (emphasis on "Dandy"), and disco-ballsy Donna Summer duet, returned to "AGT" this week to hold court, and his performance of the old Muse-popularized standard "Feeling Good" was a thrill to behold. Bedecked

  • Um, does Ryan Murphy have a master plan to entirely recast "Glee" with "Glee Project" contestants? Well, that may be a bit speculative. But in light of the "Glee" creator's constant controversial talk of post-graduation cast changes and his decision this week on "The Glee Project's" season finale to give all four final contestants--Samuel, Damien, Lindsay, and Alex--recurring roles on "Glee," it doesn't seem so far-fetched. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if Ryan gave sixth-place fan favorite Cameron Mitchell (who quit "The Glee Project" despite Ryan's protests) a call and begged to cast him too.

"Did we all just win a little bit?" gasped Lindsay at the end of "The Glee Project's" shocker finale on Sunday. And yes, they all really did. Resident heartthrobs Samuel Larsen and Damian McGinty tied for first place (I imagine this might have been a three-way tie with Cameron, if he'd stayed in the game), which meant they each won a seven-episode story arc on "Glee." Meanwhile, Ryan

  • "I think that Zeus himself would invite you to come dance on Mount Olympus," judge Lil' C told early standout Melanie Moore, when she first memorably auditioned in Atlanta on "So You Think Can Dance's" premiere episode back in May. Melanie remained a frontrunner and the Lythgoe-appointed "Beast" of Season 8 from that moment on, earning the raves of main judge Nigel Lythgoe and guest judge Lady Gaga, both of whom openly declared Melanie their favorite. So I'm sure Gaga, and maybe even Zeus himself, were thrilled when an emotionally sobbing Melanie was voted America's favorite dancer on this Thursday's big "SYTYCD" finale, after receiving FORTY-SEVEN PERCENT of the entire vote and a $250,000 cash prize.

This is hardly the biggest upset in "SYTYCD" history. It is in fact the most predictable finale result ever. Nigel had predicted all season long that a female would win this year (and, some conspiracy theorists might claim, orchestrated the competition to get the result he wanted), and

  • On Wednesday, four of the most talented dancers from one of the best "So You Think You Can Dance" seasons ever competed for the last time, but this certainly wasn't the best "So You Think You Can Dance" finale ever. While there were four routines (out of the evening's total 10) that I really loved--a jazz number by Melanie and Tadd, Melanie's contemporary with allstar Robert Roldan, Sasha's contemporary with allstar Mark Kanemura, and, most of all, a gorgeous Sasha/Melanie pairing--many other dances just fell flat for me. And some were in genres that producer Nigel Lythgoe had to have known would not be popular with viewers (like disco, cha cha, and...wait for it...GUMBOOT STEPPING).

And it wasn't just me who felt this way. Even Nigel himself was left feeling underwhelmed. During one critique on the live show, he complained, "We've got four brilliant dancers in the finale, and I've got to be honest and say I've been a little disappointed this evening with what the finale is." Later

  • This week was YouTube week on "America's Got Talent," with an assortment of viral video wannabes, including a skateboarding bulldog, vying for a spot in the semifinals. (Spoiler: The dog didn't make it. Kindly post your protests on the message board below). None of these YouTubers were quite as impressive as last year's big "AGT" online discovery, a little girl you may have heard about named Jackie Evancho. And many of them will probably go back to their bedrooms and their flipcams, forgotten by everyone but their most devoted YouTube channel subscribers. But maybe all is not lost for them: The viral video stars who guest-performed on this week's "AGT" results show could give them hope that a lasting career may still be just a mouse-click away.

Those performers were Rebecca Black, whose main talent seems to be milking the sudden fame stemming from the accidental success of "Friday" (which, ironically, she pulled from YouTube weeks ago); lip-synching teen Keenan Cahill; Tay Zonday,

  • Last night on "America's Got Talent's" YouTube auditions episode, the insufferably cheery Powerhouse Choir, from John Burroughs High School in Burbank, performed Katy Perry's "Firework." And their "Firework," well, sort of fizzled. It even earned a rare red X from the usually easy-to-please Howie Mandel (a judge who'd earlier in the night given raves to Gabe, a skateboarding dog).

So imagine my surprise when one of the not-exactly-powerhouse choir singers claimed that Powerhouse was the inspiration behind "Glee"!

While the choir's attitude sure was gleeful, all right, and it's true that "Glee" episodes have been filmed at John Burroughs High School (according to TV Guide), it's still hard to believe the backstory here. None of these kids pose any threat to Lea Michele, and none of them would even make it past "The Glee Project's" open MySpace audtions. Inspiration can come from the most interesting sources, I guess.

Check out superior "Firework" performances below by the casts of
