Reality Rocks
  • This week was YouTube week on "America's Got Talent," with an assortment of viral video wannabes, including a skateboarding bulldog, vying for a spot in the semifinals. (Spoiler: The dog didn't make it. Kindly post your protests on the message board below). None of these YouTubers were quite as impressive as last year's big "AGT" online discovery, a little girl you may have heard about named Jackie Evancho. And many of them will probably go back to their bedrooms and their flipcams, forgotten by everyone but their most devoted YouTube channel subscribers. But maybe all is not lost for them: The viral video stars who guest-performed on this week's "AGT" results show could give them hope that a lasting career may still be just a mouse-click away.

Those performers were Rebecca Black, whose main talent seems to be milking the sudden fame stemming from the accidental success of "Friday" (which, ironically, she pulled from YouTube weeks ago); lip-synching teen Keenan Cahill; Tay Zonday,

  • Last night on "America's Got Talent's" YouTube auditions episode, the insufferably cheery Powerhouse Choir, from John Burroughs High School in Burbank, performed Katy Perry's "Firework." And their "Firework," well, sort of fizzled. It even earned a rare red X from the usually easy-to-please Howie Mandel (a judge who'd earlier in the night given raves to Gabe, a skateboarding dog).

So imagine my surprise when one of the not-exactly-powerhouse choir singers claimed that Powerhouse was the inspiration behind "Glee"!

While the choir's attitude sure was gleeful, all right, and it's true that "Glee" episodes have been filmed at John Burroughs High School (according to TV Guide), it's still hard to believe the backstory here. None of these kids pose any threat to Lea Michele, and none of them would even make it past "The Glee Project's" open MySpace audtions. Inspiration can come from the most interesting sources, I guess.

Check out superior "Firework" performances below by the casts of

  • Season 6 "So You Think You Dance" darling Mollee Gray was quite a cutie back when she was dancing on TV with the equally babyfaced Nathan Trasoras, but nowadays she's acting like a total badass. Following in the Capezio'd footsteps of other reality dancers who've launched singing careers (Julianne Hough, Mark Ballas, Benji and Lacey Schwimmer, Sandra Colton, Blake McGrath), Mollee has released her own music video, for the single "You Don't Know Anything." And it looks like little Mollee is all grown up.

Granted, the lyrics of the song are a little cheesy and a little too literal. And the choreography and storyline sort of bring to mind '80s-rampage music videos like Pat Benatar's "Love Is A Battlefield," Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse Of The Heart," and Scandal's "The Warrior." (This is a good or bad thing, depending on how you feel about early-MTV production values; I totally dig it, albeit slightly ironically.) But Mollee belts out the emo-tinged, Evanescence-meets-Paramore powerhouse

  • Considering how "American Idol" voter demographics have skewed in favor of cute young male contestants over the past few seasons, I can't help but wonder if Chris Richardson, whom Simon Cowell once likened to Justin Timberlake, would have fared if he'd tried out for the show later on. Chris placed fifth in Season 6--the last season when a girl, Jordin Sparks, won "Idol"--but if he and buddy/fellow S6 heartthrob Blake Lewis had competed in any later season, they probably would have squared off in the finale, in the ultimate "Idol" boy battle.

But sometimes good things come to those who wait. More than four years after his "Idol" elimination, Chris is the featured vocalist on Cash Money recording artist Tyga's single "Far Away," and the song is a bona fide hit. As of this writing, it's at number four on Billboard's Bubbling Under The Hot 100 chart, making it Chris's first Billboard charting. Chris has also signed to Cash Money himself, with a debut solo album in the works for 2011.

  • Just like those awesome times when the "Ace Of Cakes" pastry chefs baked a cake in honor of '90s alt-rock icons Pavement or when Kings Of Leon's singer Caleb Followill was a guest judge on "Iron Chef," the recent appearance by Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme on "punk rock chef" Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" this Monday was a rock 'n' roll recipe for reality foodie fabulousness.

Following up QOTSA's memorable performance on the Travel Channel's culinary adventure series' 2007 Christmas special, this week Anthony traveled to Homme's home turf, the High Desert in Southern California, for some real Cali cuisine--i.e., BBQ binges, tequila tastings, and hangover-curing Mexican breakfasts. Anthony and Josh's road trip in search of rock 'n' roll eats was a feast for the eyes and, thanks to Homme's music throughout, the ears. And they certainly met some interesting dinner guests along the way.

Incidentally, Anthony is no stranger to '90s alt-rock: The theme song for his

  • I suppose it's no newsflash or big shocker that "American Idol" diva Pia Toscano looks good in her music video debut, "This Time." She has always been a pretty girl. But...dang. Pia looks REALLY good here.

Although I never found fault with Pia's easy-on-the-ears vocals or easy-on-the-eyes face, I also never quite thought that she came across as a STAR. I always believed something--that elusive "X factor," as Simon Cowell would put it--was just missing with Pia. She always flatlined onstage for me, never really brought the fire. But when I watched her "This Time" video, for the first time, I finally saw the makings of a true pop star. Pia still has a ways to go, but she's made leaps and bounds from her "Idol" days of just planting herself in front of a microphone in a floor-length pageant dress, statue-still except for some occasional awkward arm-flailing.

As Pia frolics on a beach in her new video, sporting mermaid hair, bare legs, kohl-rimmed smoky eyes, and not much else, there's no

  • I don't know about you, but when I first heard reigning "American Idol" champion Scotty McCreery's debut single, "I Love You This Big," visions of backyard BBQs didn't exactly spring to mind. But apparently that was the vision that director Shane Drake had, as Shane's video for the song--Scotty's first music video, finally out this week--boasts a simple summertime theme, all about family fun in the sun and nothing more.

While I'd expected a more romantic, literal video for this puppy-love ballad, with Scotty serenading a lucky young Southern belle instead of a backyard full of regular folk, in defense of the "I Love You This Big" vid, it's completely age-appropriate, as well as Scotty-appropriate. He is only 17 years old, after all, and while he may have made his first mark on "Idol" singing a sexy song about locking doors and lowering lights, he is quite an innocent (as his cross-kissing reaction to Lady Gaga's scandalous "Idol" mentorship clearly proved).

    Though this video may be

  • In a bizarre act of failing to pace themselves, the "American Idol" powers-that-be released THREE new Idol videos over the past 24 hours, by this year's Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, and Pia Toscano. That's a whole lot of Idoliciousness to take in all at once. I've written individual reviews of each video (click for Scotty, Lauren, and Pia), but now it's time for an "Idol" rematch of sorts. Pia may have stalled in ninth place and Scotty may have won Season 10, but when it comes to their videos, they rank very differently.

Of course, not all videos are created equal, and while none of the Idols' vids are perfect, they're good first attempts. But who filmed it best? Read on...

Pia's song, "This Time," is a Bedingfieldian female empowerment anthem about escaping a dysfunctional relationship and breaking out on one's own. But her video features no scenes of her packing her bags, standing up to her controlling boyfriend, or really doing anything other than posing

  • Kristy Suddeth, the blonde-bouffanted young mom of "American Idol" runner-up Lauren Alaina (Suddeth), almost became as big a star during "Idol" Season 10 as her daughter did, and she sometimes seemed to be enjoying the "Idol" experience even more than Lauren was. (She has actually been tweeting from the road while chaperoning Lauren on this summer's Idols Live Tour.) One of Lauren's most memorable TV moments, in fact, was when she serenaded her mom in the audience during her finale week performance of her debut single, "Like My Mother Does." So it's only fitting that Mama Suddeth has a prominent role in that song's music video, which is finally out this week.

Following in the tradition of fellow country "Idol" Carrie Underwood's "Mama's Song" video, which starred Carrie's own real-life mom, "Like My Mother Does" also celebrates motherhood. But while Carrie's wedding-themed video came at a juncture in Carrie's life when she was getting married and leaving the nest, the much younger

  • Kara DioGuardi and Jewel's songwriting competition "Platinum Hit" may have been a ratings disaster for the Bravo network, which gave up on the show mid-season and moved it from Mondays to Fridays. But those few of us still watching "Platinum Hit" got to see quite a few talented singer-songwriters pen and perform quite a few genuinely good songs--some good enough to compete on the radio alongside the hits of today. And this Friday, the competition came down to R&B man (and Jordin Sparks's creative director) Scotty Granger, who placed third; indie-girl underdog Jes Hudak, who came in second; and powerhouse diva Sonyae Elise, who ultimately took home the $100,000 grand prize after her finale song, the Blige-like ballad "My Religion," won over the judges.

While there's no doubting that Sonyae is a natural talent and the best lyricist among the three "Platinum Hit" finalists, I do find it surprising and interesting that the winner of the show was the ONE contestant who didn't possess the
