Reality Rocks
  • This week on "So You Think You Can Dance," last season's champion and runner-up, Lauren Froderman and Kent Boyd, returned to the show to reprise their iconic, Travis Wall-choreographed, Emmy-nominated "Collide" routine, complete with a reenactment of their famous onstage smooch. Kent also served as an allstar for Sasha's amazing wall dance (the most "Deeley chills"-worthy routine of Wednesday night), following Lauren's return as an allstar last week in a surprisingly sexy jazz routine with Tadd.

It sure was nice to see these two come back as seasoned pros, but when the two reunited backstage at "SYTYCD" for a quick chat with Reality Rocks, they proved they're still a coupla crazy kids. Yes, "Boyderman" (as I like to call them) may have offered some sage pre-finale advice for Season 8's final four, and may have had some very sweet sentiments to say about their own "SYTYCD" journeys...but their interview eventually descended into totally cute chaos. And I wouldn't have had it any other

  • This week on "So You Think You Can Dance's" results show, the judges decided to honor the public vote and just eliminate the two lowest vote-getters, Ricky and Caitlynn. This left America's four favorite dancers so far--Melanie, Marko, Sasha, and Tadd--in the running to win the ultimate title of "America's Favorite Dancer" next week.

While the results were hardly surprising--the final four have been frontrunners all season long, and have all earned their rightful spots in the finale--the judges still had plenty to say backstage after Thursday's eliminations. Click the videos below to see Nigel discuss why he still thinks a girl will win this season, and what weaknesses each contestant needs to respectively overcome in order to win; to see Mary make her own predictions and reveal why the male contestants have been underestimated this season; and to see Lil' C colorfully and colloquially describe each contestant and reveal what sort of routine he would've choreographed for Sasha if he'd

  • This Thursday was a bittersweet night on "So You Think You Can Dance." While no one could argue with the final four, who were announced that evening (Melanie, Marko, Sasha, and Tadd, all of whom were America's top four vote-getters this week and all of whom are amazing in their own ways), it was tough to say goodbye to worthy contenders Caitlynn and Ricky. Especially Ricky, who was my personal favorite male dancer this season, and who I thought had a real shot of making it to the finale over fellow dark horse Tadd. (Ricky scored more votes than Tadd last week, so really, it could have been either of them, down to the wire.)

Ricky seemed more emotional than Caitlynn when the two spoke separately (and way too briefly) to reporters backstage immediately following Thursday's results show, freely admitting that he was "bummed." (And both contestants welled up during their interviews. Aw.) However, both dancers wore rose-colored glasses over their teary eyes, as they optimistically realized

  • "The Glee Project," the Oxygen Network's televised talent search for a new "Glee" cast member that is actually infinitely more entertaining than "Glee" has been in ages, has created some amazing music videos over its eight episodes so far--from the retro goofiness of "We're Not Gonna Take It," "U Can't Touch This," and "Don't You Want Me" to last week's sweetly sexy "Teenage Dream." A few weeks ago on the "Vulnerability" episode, the cast's ennui-laden, black-and-white video for "Mad World" was a real gut-wrencher and tear-jerker...but I think it's this week's "Believability" challenge video, a cover of Paramore's ballad "The Only Exception," that packs the biggest emotional wallop, in its own quiet and effective way.

If there's been any finer depiction of the sweet, deep ache of unrequited teenage love in recent TV or music video history, I certainly can't recall it. I think it's the point in the video below when Alex stares piningly across the library desk at Damian that I started

  • "The only winner is dance; at the end of the day, dance wins," Nigel Lythgoe sunnily declared on Thursday's "So You Think You Can Dance" results show, the last results show before next week's big finale. Well, Caitlynn and Ricky, who were voted off Thursday and thus denied any chance of actually winning Season 8, might beg to differ with Mr. Lythgoe. But Nigel did have a valid point. After the biggest vote of season, four stellar dancers remained--Marko, Sasha, Melanie, and Tadd--and they will undoubtedly make for an incredible finale next week. The real winners, therefore, are actually "SYTYCD" viewers.

And these four dancers really are the dancers that viewers chose. Nigel explained, at the top of Thursday's elimination episode, that the judges had decided to simply eliminate the bottom two in terms of votes (one boy, one girl), rather than deliberate. "Because we don't want to reveal who the top two are, we can't reveal who the bottom four are," he said, forcing viewers to do some

  • This week's top six "So You Think You Can Dance" showdown was admittedly a slight letdown after last Wednesday's episode, one of the best in "SYTYCD" history. But this week still continued the fine tradition of what guest judge Christina Applegate declared "the best season I've seen." And it was, as this week's other guest judge Lil' c put it, "bucc." And it was without a doubt the most important episode of Season 8 so far, as it determined who will make it into next week's big finale.

For weeks now, it has seemed like Sasha, Melanie, and Marko's finale spots have been pre-ordained. And while Wednesday's performances only seemed to substantiate that prophecy, dark-horse girl Caitlynn did put up a good fight, and Tadd and Ricky's battle for that one remaining wild-card spot in the final four was a real nail-biter.

All six seemingly superhuman contestants danced THREE dances apiece--one with an allstar, one with a fellow contestant, one solo--and since the judges did not officially

  • Saturday, July 30, was the second annual National Dance Day, a new official holiday created by "So You Think You Can Dance" producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe's Dizzy Feet Foundation to encourage amateur dancers of all ages and athletic levels to dance for fun and fitness. After routines choreographed by "SYTYCD" pros Mary Murphy, Robin Antin, and Tabitha & Napoleon were posted on www.dance4yourlife.org for fans to learn, those fans congregated at locations across the nation to participate in flashmobs (and burn a few calories while doing so--they were literally dancing for their lives!).

Lythgoe himself, along with (Dizzy Feet Foundation co-founders) Katie Holmes and "Dancing With The Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba, plus Nappytabs, Antin, and Sharon and Billy Blanks Jr., all appeared at L.A.'s National Dance Day event at the Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park. Meanwhile, Mary Murphy emceed the Washington, D.C. event at the National Mall, joined Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who
