Reality Rocks
  • "American Idol" this season, perhaps more than any other season, was full of elimination shockers, from Pia to Casey to James to Haley. But on "The Voice," there are few such surprises. The real surprise is just how frequently America gets it right when it comes to the voting on this awesome show.

Wednesday night, on the all-important results show before next week's big final showdown, the four singers that punters believed would--and, more importantly, should--make it through actually, well, made it through. Yes, the four mentors' votes counted too; they all assigned a certain number of points to each of their remaining team members. But only one of those mentors, the ever-controversial Adam Levine, stacked the deck lopsidedly in favor of one of his contestants (a contestant who surely didn't even need the help). So really, this week's "Voice" results represented the voice of the people. The voice of America.

And that was perhaps what was most surprising about this week's results:

  • Last night, the final eight competed on "The Voice," plus we found out which contestants from Team Adam and Team Cee Lo (who competed last week) made it through to this crucial round. There were no huge surprises--America voted through Adam Levine's Javier Colon and Cee Lo Green's Vicci Martinez, while those judges' respective picks were Casey Weston and Nakia--but there was still plenty of drama, and today, there is much for my Yahoo! colleague Matt Whitfield and I to discuss.

Is Adam Levine REALLY unfamiliar with Adam Lambert's "Whataya Want From Me," or (conspiracy theory alert!) was he just trying to slip in a playful jab at "The Voice's" rival show (or even trying to sabotage Nakia, who covered "WWFM")? Could Vicci Martinez or Dia Frampton steal the title next week from Javier Colon? And which bald diva will prevail from Team Xtina, Beverly McClellan or Frenchie Davis?

  • Yet again, this week "The Voice" set itself apart from its biggest competition, "American Idol," with results that made it clear that this show attracts an entirely different, perhaps more enlightened audience. Last week, America voted through soft-spoken singer-songwriter girl Dia Frampton (from Team Blake) and bald, neck-tattooed rocker Beverly McClellan (from Team Xtina), and this week viewers voted for another rock chick with raw style, Vicci Martinez (from Team Cee Lo), along with smooth soulman Javier Colon (from Team Adam). Additionally, this week Cee Lo Green's own pick for his team was bear-like bluesman Nakia, while Adam Levine went with another guitar-strumming songstress, Casey Weston, for his pick.

The above-mentioned singers, combined with Blake Shelton's sweet teen crooner Xenia and Christina Aguilera's fierce diva Frenchie Davis, now comprise "The Voice" semifinals' top eight. And these are the types of contestants who, frankly, rarely stand a chance on "Idol." Three of

  • Season 3 diamond-crowned "RuPaul's Drag Race" winner Raja (and alter ego of Adam Lambert/"America's Next Top Model" makeup artist Sutan) recently released her first single, "Diamond Crowned Queen"--a trashy track that brings to mind synthy '70s sleazefests like "Warm Leatherette," '80s industrial, and mid-'90s house music hits. The song has been as controversial and polarizing as Raja herself, featuring (penciled-)eyebrow-raising couplets about licking on triggers and feasting on sex for dinner, not to mention a lot of groaning straight out of a Berlin or Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder remix. A 12-inch remix. Pun intended.

And now, ladies, gentlemen, and all those who fall somewhere on the gender spectrum in between: Raja's "Diamond Crowned Queen" video is OUT! And it is quite a feast for the heavily guylinered eyes, as it depicts Raja/Sutan lip-synching for her/his life alongside the other fiercest femme fatale in "Drag Race" history, Raven. RAVEN!!!

  • Little monsters the world over rejoiced when it was announced this week that Lady Gaga--who historically made her U.S. television performance debut on "So You Think You Can Dance" back in 2008, singing the Season 4 theme song "Just Dance," and then later recruited Season 4 contestant Mark Kanemura for her dance troupe--will return to the show sometime later this season, this time as a guest judge.

While Gaga has appeared on reality shows before--for some bizarre reason, she guested on Bravo's short-lived fashion competition "Launch My Line" in January 2010, and she mentored this year on "American Idol"--her judging stint on "SYTYCD" will truly be must-see TV.

"What she will do is give great advice on how to handle yourself, how to be creatve with what you do, and how to be a fabulous performer," show producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe told reporters this week. "She has actually done what I want these [contestants] to do, which is get an audience behind them."

  • Last night on "So You Think You Can Dance's" first results show of Season 8, something unprecedented took place: The indecisive judges (including guest judge Megan Mullally) asked two of the up-for-elimination dancers, Mitchell and Robert, to reprise their solos...and then ultimately chose to keep all 20 contestants on the show for another week. It all made for excellently suspenseful television, but apparently this was not staged for just for TV drama's sake.

Speaking to reporters backstage immediately after the show, main judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed that the surprising decision was just as last-minute as it seemed on TV, and was made in the final minutes of Thursday's live episode. "I called for Mike Darnell [Fox's president of alternative entertainment] and Trae Williams, who is standards and practices, and said, 'This is what we'd like to do. We've done it on 'Idol' before. I know we've never done it on this program, but it gives us another week for America

  • "Dancing With The Stars" pro (and one of my favorite former "So You Think You Can Dance" contestants) Lacey Schwimmer is following in the cha-cha-heeled footsteps of her "DWTS" castmates Mark Ballas and Julianne Hough, and getting into the music biz. Her debut single, "Love Soundz," premiered on Ryan Seacrest's morning show this week, and while it's not her first recorded musical effort--she lent guest vocals to electropop band Cash Cash's "Red Cup" last year--it's the first official single released under her name.

Check out the song, "Love Soundz," below (it'll be on iTunes June 21):

True to her dancing background, the track is upbeat, sexy, and clubby; it wouldn't sound out of place on a Kylie or Britney album, really. But "Love Soundz," which was produced and written by The Monsters & The Stranger, is so full of processed beatz and even more processed vocals, it doesn't exactly make it clear whether or not Lacey can, well, sing as awesomely as she dances. It might as well have

  • 'Iron Man 3' races past $1 billion dollar mark on monster foreign take

By Todd Cunningham LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Iron Man 3" was soaring past $1 billion at the worldwide box office Thursday, in a display of world domination that would make one of Marvel's super villains proud. The box-office bounty - roughly $700 million from abroad and $300 million domestically - is a major triumph for Disney, which bet big on comic book superheroes when it bought Marvel Studios for $4 billion in 2009. And its decision to bring aboard a Chinese partner for "Iron Man 3" and focus the Disney marketing machine on the booming foreign market looks pretty good right now, too. ...
