  • Season 7 "American Idol" finalist Brooke White is one of my favorite Idols ever, and although she has found success acting and hosting in various TV projects, her post-"Idol" music has not garnered the attention I feel it should have. Until now. I think Brooke's finally found the ideal vehicle for her folksy talents.

Brooke has just formed a duo amusingly named Jack & White with California singer-songwriter Jack Matranga (formerly of the indie band Self Against City). The two were recently matched up blindly, for a session to co-write a song for what was supposed to be Brooke's new solo album...but they hit off so well during that session that they ended up writing six songs, and decided to release them as the Gemini EP (out this summer) under the name Jack & White.

I am loving the music snippets I hear in the teaser above--it's all reminiscent of great easy-breezy '60s and '70s folk-rockers like the Mamas & The Papas, the Carpenters, and Fleetwood Mac, but the music also brings to

  • Thursday night was a rough night on "So You Think You Can Dance," as four incredible dancers--ballroom goddess Iveta, tapper Nick, jazz sexpot Missy, and B-boy Wadi--were all sent home at once. In any other season, contestants this excellent might've easily sailed through to the top 10. But Season 8 is so fiercely competitive, it's a whole other game.

It should be pointed out that none of these dancers were up for elimination last week, when the flip-flopping judges decided at the last minute not to cut anyone. Did the fanbases of last week's bottom seven contestants, who were all given another chance, mobilize and vote in droves this Wednesday, leading to an entirely new result this week? Would Iveta, Nick, Missy, and Wadi still be around this week if two dancers HAD gone home last week? Well, at least two of them would be...as for the other two, it could just be that the "SYTYCD" race really is too close to call this year.

Anyway, check out Thursday night's emotional interviews with

  • Thursday night was a tough night on "So You Think You Can Dance," as judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy--assisted by legendary guest judge Debbie Reynolds--were forced to eliminate four very amazing dancers (Iveta, Nick, Missy, and Wadi). Nigel and Mary postponed their agony last week by deciding not to cut anyone, but it was inevtiable that by week two, four contestants would be gone--and having them all go in one night was especially hard.

And it should be noted that the three couples that were up for elimination this week--the aforementioned dancers, plus Ryan and Ricky, who were ultimately saved--were NOT in the bottom three couples last week. Did the fanbases of last week's at-risk dancers, who were given another chance, mobilize and vote like crazy this Wednesday, leading to an entirely new result this week? Possibly...or it could just be that the "SYTYCD" race really is THAT close this season.

Check out Thursday night's interviews with Nigel, Mary, and Debbie after the results

  • "American Idol" alum Ryan Starr (not to be confused with male "Rock Star: Supernova" alum Ryan Star) is best known for flaunting her taut midriff on "AI" Season 1 and sparring with nemesis Flavor Flav on "The Surreal Life." But she's back to making music--with a very surprising collaborator.

Ryan appears on "Chemically," an electronic club banger by Dutch producer Sander Kleinenberg, who has worked on remixes for Royksopp, Justin Timberlake, N.E.R.D., Daft Punk, and many others. The progressive house pioneer, founder of the Little Mountain Recordings and THIS IS Recordings labels, recently released the album Sander Kleinenberg Presents 5K, and interestingly, Ryan appears on one of its catchiest tracks, "Chemically." (FYI, Jamie's Cullum also contributes guest vocals to another 5K cut, "Remember When.")

The effects-laden song doesn't exactly showcase Ryan's vocal ability--she's rapping more than actually singing, really--but it does show off her sexy side, and hearing the reality show

  • There'd be "blood on the dance floor" by the night's end, warned "So You Think You Can Dance" hostess Cat Deeley. And she was barely exaggerating. OK, maybe there was no blood, but there was a whole lot of sweat and especially tears on Thursday night, when the first four dancers of Season 8 were sadly sent home.

Yes, there were four castoffs, not the usual two, due to last week's controversial decision (when the judges couldn't decide who to eliminate and instead opted to have all 20 dancers stay on for another week). But interestingly, none of the three couples who were up for elimination last week were in this week's bottom three. Last week Ryan and Ricky, Iveta and Nick, and Wadi and Missy were all safe...but this week, they were in trouble. This development indicates just how tight a race it is this year. No one is 100 percent safe on this show.

Wadi and Missy were probably the least surprising dancers to see on the chopping block this week, given that Nigel Lythgoe and Mary

  • After last Thursday's surprising results-free "results" show, on which the indecisive judges opted to save all 20 excellent dancers from elimination, the stakes were high when the "So You Think You Can Dance" top 20 returned this Wednesday--knowing that to compensate, four dancers (not the usual two) would go home this week. And this week wouldn't just be tough for the dancers, but for the judges, too--because, come on now, if the judges couldn't decide on two contestants to cut before, how on earth would they ever handle sending four home?

This week's quadruple-elimination was the bad news, but the good news was, the added competitive pressure this week inspired all 20 hopefuls to step up their game, thus resulting in an especially amazing two hours of dance, ranging from Broadway to Bollywood. So everyone wins! At least until Thursday night, that is...

Here's how everyone did--and be warned, Thursday's results show is going to be TOUGH:

  • "American Idol" this season, perhaps more than any other season, was full of elimination shockers, from Pia to Casey to James to Haley. But on "The Voice," there are few such surprises. The real surprise is just how frequently America gets it right when it comes to the voting on this awesome show.

Wednesday night, on the all-important results show before next week's big final showdown, the four singers that punters believed would--and, more importantly, should--make it through actually, well, made it through. Yes, the four mentors' votes counted too; they all assigned a certain number of points to each of their remaining team members. But only one of those mentors, the ever-controversial Adam Levine, stacked the deck lopsidedly in favor of one of his contestants (a contestant who surely didn't even need the help). So really, this week's "Voice" results represented the voice of the people. The voice of America.

And that was perhaps what was most surprising about this week's results:

  • Last night, the final eight competed on "The Voice," plus we found out which contestants from Team Adam and Team Cee Lo (who competed last week) made it through to this crucial round. There were no huge surprises--America voted through Adam Levine's Javier Colon and Cee Lo Green's Vicci Martinez, while those judges' respective picks were Casey Weston and Nakia--but there was still plenty of drama, and today, there is much for my Yahoo! colleague Matt Whitfield and I to discuss.

Is Adam Levine REALLY unfamiliar with Adam Lambert's "Whataya Want From Me," or (conspiracy theory alert!) was he just trying to slip in a playful jab at "The Voice's" rival show (or even trying to sabotage Nakia, who covered "WWFM")? Could Vicci Martinez or Dia Frampton steal the title next week from Javier Colon? And which bald diva will prevail from Team Xtina, Beverly McClellan or Frenchie Davis?

  • Yet again, this week "The Voice" set itself apart from its biggest competition, "American Idol," with results that made it clear that this show attracts an entirely different, perhaps more enlightened audience. Last week, America voted through soft-spoken singer-songwriter girl Dia Frampton (from Team Blake) and bald, neck-tattooed rocker Beverly McClellan (from Team Xtina), and this week viewers voted for another rock chick with raw style, Vicci Martinez (from Team Cee Lo), along with smooth soulman Javier Colon (from Team Adam). Additionally, this week Cee Lo Green's own pick for his team was bear-like bluesman Nakia, while Adam Levine went with another guitar-strumming songstress, Casey Weston, for his pick.

The above-mentioned singers, combined with Blake Shelton's sweet teen crooner Xenia and Christina Aguilera's fierce diva Frenchie Davis, now comprise "The Voice" semifinals' top eight. And these are the types of contestants who, frankly, rarely stand a chance on "Idol." Three of

  • Jackie Tohn has been keepng busy since her brief stint on "American Idol" Season 8: acting on "Memphis Beat," making music with her "Platinum Hit" co-star Jes Hudak under the awesome moniker Powerfox & Ponymane, contributing to the You Again soundtrack, hanging out at Yahoo!, jamming wth Casey Abrams, hopefully winning "Platinum Hit" eventually, etc.

Yet somehow she found the time to shoot her latest music video, for "I Got It In Me," in more than 20 locales, including a grassy meadow, a beach, a dirt lot, a city rooftop, a forest, a playground, and even a moving train. The girl gets around.

Just how many locations are there in "I Got It In Me"? I think I counted 21...but just to be sure, you'd all better watch it closely and do the math yourselves:
