Reality Rocks
  • Little monsters the world over rejoiced when it was announced this week that Lady Gaga--who historically made her U.S. television performance debut on "So You Think You Can Dance" back in 2008, singing the Season 4 theme song "Just Dance," and then later recruited Season 4 contestant Mark Kanemura for her dance troupe--will return to the show sometime later this season, this time as a guest judge.

While Gaga has appeared on reality shows before--for some bizarre reason, she guested on Bravo's short-lived fashion competition "Launch My Line" in January 2010, and she mentored this year on "American Idol"--her judging stint on "SYTYCD" will truly be must-see TV.

"What she will do is give great advice on how to handle yourself, how to be creatve with what you do, and how to be a fabulous performer," show producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe told reporters this week. "She has actually done what I want these [contestants] to do, which is get an audience behind them."

  • Last night on "So You Think You Can Dance's" first results show of Season 8, something unprecedented took place: The indecisive judges (including guest judge Megan Mullally) asked two of the up-for-elimination dancers, Mitchell and Robert, to reprise their solos...and then ultimately chose to keep all 20 contestants on the show for another week. It all made for excellently suspenseful television, but apparently this was not staged for just for TV drama's sake.

Speaking to reporters backstage immediately after the show, main judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed that the surprising decision was just as last-minute as it seemed on TV, and was made in the final minutes of Thursday's live episode. "I called for Mike Darnell [Fox's president of alternative entertainment] and Trae Williams, who is standards and practices, and said, 'This is what we'd like to do. We've done it on 'Idol' before. I know we've never done it on this program, but it gives us another week for America

  • "Dancing With The Stars" pro (and one of my favorite former "So You Think You Can Dance" contestants) Lacey Schwimmer is following in the cha-cha-heeled footsteps of her "DWTS" castmates Mark Ballas and Julianne Hough, and getting into the music biz. Her debut single, "Love Soundz," premiered on Ryan Seacrest's morning show this week, and while it's not her first recorded musical effort--she lent guest vocals to electropop band Cash Cash's "Red Cup" last year--it's the first official single released under her name.

Check out the song, "Love Soundz," below (it'll be on iTunes June 21):

True to her dancing background, the track is upbeat, sexy, and clubby; it wouldn't sound out of place on a Kylie or Britney album, really. But "Love Soundz," which was produced and written by The Monsters & The Stranger, is so full of processed beatz and even more processed vocals, it doesn't exactly make it clear whether or not Lacey can, well, sing as awesomely as she dances. It might as well have

  • Every season, I assume "So You Think You Can Dance" can't get any better, or the competition can't get any stiffer. Season 4 brought us the amazing likes of Katee Shean and Mark Kanemura; Season 5 stunned with talents like Brandon Bryant and Jeanine Mason; and then came Season 6's Jakob Karr and Ellenore Scott, and last season's brilliant Billy Bell and gone-too-soon Alex Wong. And now, as the live competitive portion of "SYTYCD" Season 8 kicked off Wednesday night, the talent elevated to an even more nose-bleedingly high level. This was obvious the moment the top 19 came out at the start of the show to do their intro solos.

Yes, top 19. Not top 20. Because speaking of bleeding, already injuries--something  all too common on "SYTYCD," as evidenced by Alex Wong's heartbreaking disqualification last year--plagued the Season 8 cast this week. Poor Mitchell Kelly had to sit out the show this week due to an injured elbow, which means he'll automatically be in jeopardy on Thursday's results

  • Last night, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green's teams competed on "The Voice," plus we found out which singers from Team Xtina and Team Blake (who competed last week) made it through to the next round. There were a couple surprises--namely, America's unexpected embracing of Beverly McClellan and Blake Shelton's polarizing decision to save Xenia--but for the most part, my Yahoo! Entertainment colleague Matt Whitfield and I agree that the best four singers (Beverly and Xenia, plus Frenchie Davis and Dia Frampton) prevailed.

And oh, there is much more to discuss. Why did Cee Lo put poor Tori & Taylor Thompson in those stupid "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" uniforms? Does Nakia have a lisp? Could Vicci Martinez win it all? Is Casey Weston a dark horse? We discuss all this and more today.

  • Hey kids! Want a real live American Idol to perform your next event? Well, it'll cost you, of course. Just maybe not as much as you think.

The New York Post recently ran an article on the booking fees for various "Idol" alums, everyone from Season 7 semifinalist Carly Smithson (with her Evanescence-associated rock band, We Are The Fallen) to the most successful Idols of all time, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. And some of the figures are a bit surprising.

The findings are based on fees posted on the website of Degy Entertainment, a "middle agency" that helps college campuses, the U.S. Navy, and other musical event organizers deal with the red tape that comes with booking celebrity singers. (According to Degy's Jeff Hyman, the liaison agency earns its 10 percent fee by helping with matters like "making sure the artist isn't asking for six pounds of brown M&M's" and such.) While it comes as no surprise that Carrie can earn half a million for a single concert (although her fee might

  • Once again, this week "The Voice" differentiated itself from its chief competition, "American Idol," in many welcome ways. The main way it did so? This week's RESULTS! See, on "Idol," females always seem at a disadvantage, but so far on "The Voice," girls rule. Of the four contestants who made it through on Tuesday--two voters' picks, and two judges' picks--from last week's competing Team Xtina and Team Blake singers, all of them were female. (Yes, Christina Aguilera's team was an all-girl team anyway, so that was a given...but still, reason to celebrate.)

And while "Idol" is typically a very family-oriented show with an extremely conservative voter base, "The Voice" seems different: Of these four aforementioned ladies, the Team Xtina contestant that AMERICA actually voted through was an out-and-proud, fortysomething lesbian with neck tattoos and a shaved head, the type of contestant who'd normally scare innocent "Idol" viewers: Beverly McClellan. This was pretty damn refreshing. And
