  • Less than three weeks ago, "X Factor U.K." judge Cheryl Cole taped her first "X Factor USA" episodes at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, sitting alongside Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and L.A. Reid. I attended two of these tapings, and I thought she did an excellent job. She was charming, she looked gorgeous, and NO, her broad Newcastle (or "Geordie") accent was not unintelligible.

But now, right before "The X Factor's" Dallas audition tapings, Cheryl has been booted from the show and reportedly replaced by Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, who was originally hired to co-host the show with British TV presenter Steve Jones but will now fill Cheryl's seat. This sad news broke on TMZ yesterday, and while some reports are saying it was a "lack of chemistry" with Paula that led to Cheryl's firing, many other reports are saying it was simply her thick accent that did her in.

Last month in an interview with Deadline.com, Simon denied that there was ever any push-back from Fox regarding his

  • Season 8, aka The Best "American Idol" Season Ever, seems like it was just yesterday...until you observe the evolution of that season's fourth-place contestant, Allison Iraheta. Back then, Allison was seen as the baby of the season, only 16 years old, sort of like Adam Lambert's kid sister. But now she's clearly all grown up, judging from her appearance at KIIS FM's "Idol" viewing party at downtown L.A.'s Regal Cinema Wednesday night.

Sporting a new Pegasus shoulderblade tattoo, sleek figure, and sophisticated black bob that was a major contrast to her famous rainbow-brite hair extensions, Allison was almost unrecognizable from that time in 2009 when Simon Cowell criticized her teenage fashion sense. Yes, she looked awesome then (Simon was wrong), but she looked even awesome-er Wednesday night.

And she sounded awesome too, belting out two brand-new, unreleased songs, "Love" and "Tonight." Watch her rock it below, and once again, let your brain boggle as you contemplate that this

  • On Wednesday night, a new American Idol was crowned. Congrats, Scotty McCreery. But this news was actually anti-climactic compared to everything else that occurred in the 117 minutes leading up to Ryan Seacrest's big announcement. If anything, there were so many great performances by the contestants who didn't make it to the finale, it was enough to make viewers wonder if they'd voted wrong when they elected the final two. Perhaps this was not the agenda "Idol" producers had in mind when they planned this show...but their loss was our gain, because we were all treated to a night of fine Idolicious entertainment.

Here were the night's biggest highlights:

    8) Jennifer Lopez Proves She Should Be A Judge On "SYTYCD" Instead
Any viewers who saw J.Lo and her admittedly more vocally gifted husband Marc Anthony duet at the 2005 Grammys were probably relieved that J.Lo refrained from singing when Marc performed on the "Idol" finale, instead just doing what she does best: Shaking her famous

  • It was pretty obvious--after three consecutive seasons of cute, guitar-strumming male "Idol" winners--that the "American Idol" powers-that-be wanted a female champion this season. And in finalist Lauren Alaina, a girl that judge Steve Tyler declared "The One" after her very first audition--they had a very strong contender. Many fans actually thought she did better than Scotty on Tuesday's final showdown. But even Lauren, a likable girl next door in the Clarkson/Underwood/Sparks mold, could not break the girls' dry spell on this show. Yes, baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low, because it's just been announced that, despite all of the show's blatant Lauren pimping this week...Scotty McCreery is the tenth American Idol.

This is hardly an upset, of course. Lauren was a season-long favorite of both the judges and viewers, but if there was anyone who seemed even more of a shoo-in than her, it was Scotty. Unlike Lauren, he'd never been in the bottom three before, and the boy

  • Last night, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery competed to become the tenth American Idol, and while the show started off excitingly (with last-minute rumors regarding the ailing Lauren's ability to compete and the possiblity of Haley Reinhart stepping in), and ended excitingly (with David Cook playing his Simple Minds cover against a backdrop of Season 10 highlights), the rest of the show was disappointingly dull.

It was in fact "Idol's" dullest final showdown ever, although that wasn't really the contestants' fault: When left to their own devices, Lauren and Scotty chose fun and uptempo songs that suited their youth. But when forced to sing songs selected for them, it was all about boring balladry and trite lyrical cliches. Oh, those poor kids.

Speaking of poor kids, today as my Yahoo! Entertainment colleague Matt Whitfield and I discuss last night's show, we definitely think Scotty was thrown under the bus, and we also doubt just how staged/exaggerated the whole Lauren-health-scare

  • Last night on "American Idol," Lauren Alaina almost didn't get to compete against Scotty McCreery in the final showdown, when she lost her voice during rehearsal and had to seek medical treatment. This health scare was milked for all it was worth, of course, with a doctor coming out onstage at the start of the episode to dramatically grant Lauren official permission to go on with the show. But once the show was over, it was time for Lauren to give people the silent treatment.

Lauren was back on voice rest once she'd performed her three songs, so when she came backstage last night after the show, she answered reporters' questions with a little help from her interpreter (Scotty), plus a notepad and pen. Writing down her answers, Scotty read them aloud, in a cute act of teamwork. Cutest of all? When one journalist asked Scotty if he was going to heed Jennifer Lopez's suggestion that he shave his head, Lauren wrote "NO" in big block letters and held it up for everyone to see.

  • Over on Fox, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery were battling for the Season 10 "Idol" title, but on NBC, the real battles were going down Tuesday night. "The Voice's" Battle Rounds (the stage of the game in which the show's four celebrity coaches--Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and Christina Aguilera--pit their own teammates against each other) continued. And while some of the coaches' decisions made sense, Adam stupidly got rid of one of his strongest players, in what was the first real shock elimination of the season. This sort of was to "The Voice" as Pia Toscano's cut was to "Idol."

Here's what went down in the sing-off ring this week:

    RAQUEL CASTRO vs. JULIA EASTON
These two very young girls from Team Xtina dueled on Rihanna's "Only Girl In The World," in hopes of being the only girl to emerge unscathed. But both girls had their pitch problems (even Christina acknowledged this), so this turned out to be one of the more underwhelming battles of the season. I preferred

  • Topping off the most unpredictable "American Idol" season ever--one that saw the shocking eliminations of several early frontrunners, Casey Abrams' crazy meltdown when he got saved, and the unlikely rise of dark horse Haley Reinhart--Season 10's final showdown started off as the most seat-of-the-pants finale ever, when, just minutes leading up to the live show at downtown L.A.'s Nokia Theater, TMZ reported that Lauren Alaina had lost her voice, might not be able to compete, and that third-place contestant Haley might compete in her place. TMZ even reported that Haley had rehearsed three songs--"Bennie & The Jets," "I Who Have Nothing," and "House Of The Rising Sun"--while Lauren sought medical treatment.

Of course, this all seemed sketchy. It had been clear from her first audition that Lauren wanted this BAD--this is a girl who used to entertain her family by pretending to be on "Idol" as a little girl, and seems to live in deathly fear of being voted off this show--so it was hard to

  • Just about a year ago this week, Lee DeWyze stood on the stage of L.A.'s Nokia Theater, tears in his eyes and confetti in his hair, as he was crowned the ninth American Idol and he sang his coronation song, a cover of U2's "Beautiful Day." But Lee isn't having such a beautiful day today.

While his fans understandably expected him to appear on this week's "Idol" finale (just like the previous winner, Kris Allen, did last year), to ceremonially pass the torch to either Scotty McCreery or Lauren Alaina, it turns out that won't be the case. Today Lee tweeted: "Hey guys, no I'm not performing at the Finale. I wasn't asked to . A lot of questions so I thought I'd fill you in. Talk to you soon :)"

While Lee was diplomatic on his own Twitter (the smiley face was a pleasant touch), it's still odd that last year's "Idol" winner--i.e., the REIGNING CHAMP--would not be  invited to appear on this year's finale. (Lee's other tweets indicate that he's not out of town, and he makes it clear it was

  • Nigel Lythgoe just may be the hardest-working man in reality TV. Obviously, producing "American Idol" has taken up a lot of his time this year, but Season 8 of "So You Think You Can Dance" premieres May 26, the day after "Idol" ends...and on top of that he's appearing on the U.K. version of "SYTYCD," and he recently launched another TV talent search with his son Simon, "CMT's Next Superstar."

All prestigious projects, indeed...but really, "SYTYCD USA" is still my personal favorite Nigel show. If you want to see an amazingly high level of talent, week after week, you'd best tune in to Fox on Wednesdays and Thursdays this summer.

That was at least my impression when I attended the recent "SYTYCD" Season 8 Las Vegas callbacks, which took place at the Planet Hollywood hotel. The dancers there were incredible--and when they're finally whittled down to the top 10 and matched with allstars (whose names are TBA, though I did suggest Brandon Bryant and Robert Roldan to Nigel), it's going to
