  • Season 10 of "American Idol" started off as THE most diverse season ever: We had hard rock (James Durbin), indie-folk (Paul McDonald), gospel (Jacob Lusk), jazz (Casey Abrams and, to some extent, Haley Reinhart), classic diva balladry (Pia Toscano), R&B/pop (Stefano Langone and Ashthon Jones), Latin pop (Karen Rodriguez), and even reggae (Naima Adepado), represented by singers ranging in age from 15 to 26. That's why it's so ironic that we've ended up with the least diverse finale ever, with two country singers who are roughly the same age, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, vying for the "Idol" title. Apparently this country really likes country, since 70 million of last week's record 95 million votes went to Scotty and Lauren combined. But when the finale happens, how will the votes be divided once and for all?

To be fair, and to not oversimplify things, it should be noted that Scotty and Lauren don't exactly traffic in the same type of country--Lauren does more modern pop-country, a

  • The average American has a better chance of being struck by lightning than making it onto "American Idol." This is a statistical fact. No wonder the few, the proud, who have appeared on the show share such a special bond--even if they competed on different seasons (or even competed against each other!). So when The Hollywood Reporter's Shirley Halperin organized an "Idol Allstars" photo shoot in Los Angeles this month for the magazine's big "Idol" finale issue, it was a total lovefest, a giant family reunion.

Thirty former Idols (29 runners-up, plus Season 8 winner Kris Allen), ranging from Season 1's Kristin Holt Adams to this season's Casey Abrams and Pia Toscano, gathered to take a "Class of 2002-2011" photo, and here's the magic that ensued:

The idea behind this historical shoot was that even if most of these contestants didn't make it all the way on "Idol," they've since used the show as a springboard for their showbiz

  • Season 10's "American Idol" finale is this week, and while finalists Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina both had their great moments this year (Scotty's best performances, in my opinion, were "You've Got A Friend" and "Gone," and Lauren's were "Flat On The Floor" and "Trouble"), ironically, I think the best performances of the season were by contestants who've already been voted off. "American Idol" often works out that way, sadly.

It's too bad, but the good news is, all of the top 13 will be on the "Idol" stage for the finale next Wednesday, and hopefully they'll give performances as good as these:

    10) Casey Abrams - "I Put A Spell On You" (Elimination Night Version)
Casey was hospitalized with stomach pains only two days before the top 12 boys' show taping, and was released only a couple hours before he performed--but you would've NEVER guessed he was ill judging from his totally energetic, no-holds-barred performance of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' voodoo classic. Later, when he sadly got

  • Last night, underdog rebel girl Haley Reinhart was voted off in third place on "American Idol," and today, I'm still bummed about it. And so is Season 6 runner-up Blake Lewis, who came by Yahoo! to commiserate with me.

Yes, since my usual esteemed co-host Matt Whitfield is out again this week, Blake was kind enough to stop by Yahoo! to fill in for him. And Blake is one "Idol" alum who knows his stuff: His "Idol" viewing parties are the stuff of legend (anyone from Allison Iraheta to Kimberly Caldwell to Elliott Yamin to even Blake's old friendly rival Jordin Sparks might stop by), and he also regularly blogs about the show, never mincing words.

It was awesome to hear Blake's take on things as we gear up for the "Idol" finale, almost exactly four years after Blake was in Scotty and Lauren's shoes. Who does he think will win? Who does he want to win? Watch and find out:

  • "American Idol" judges and viewers alike love "moments"--those breakout, breath-taking performances that have everyone gabbing around the watercooler the next morning, and are seen in "Idol" highlight reels and remain on fans' DVRs for seasons to come. We've had a couple standout performances this year--Haley Reinhart's "House Of The Rising Sun" and "I Who Have Nothing" come to mind--but have any of them measured up to the greatest performances of the past nine seasons?

Well, no. While a decade of "Idol" has yielded countless cringe-worthy karaoke performances that had Simon Cowell making cat-in-a-blender analogies and Randy Jackson using the word "pitchy" more times than he says "in it to win it," there have been many excellent performances as well, ones that have lent the show much-needed credibility. Below are my top 10 all-time picks; what are yours? Feel free to nominate your favorites on the message board below.

    10) Casey James - "Jealous Guy"
True "wow moments" were sadly few

  • "American Idol's" Ryan Seacrest may make the big bucks, but really, it's Cat Deeley who is the hostess with the mostess. Her effusive English charm adds so much to "So You Think You Can Dance," and her love for the cast members is evident in everything she does.

Case in point: I recently attended the Season 8 "SYTYCD" callbacks in Las Vegas, and I couldn't help but notice that she sat in the Planet Hollywood theater for the entire all-day session, avidly observing all the dancers' solos. No wonder the contestants (and not just smitten allstar Dominic Sandoval) adore her so much.

"You know how much I love my job," Cat told me that fun day. "I'm a pretty happy bunny." Watch below to see this bunny happily discuss Season 8 (which premieres May 26), this year's crop of talent, and if she thinks she might finally earn a Best Host nomination at the Emmys this year.

  • You have to wonder why producer Nigel Lythgoe even bothered to launch a country talent competition, "CMT's Next Superstar," on the CMT network this year. He already has a country talent competition. It's called "American Idol." Because its final two contestants are...country singers Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery. Yee haw.

OK, I have nothing against country music, and I think both Lauren and Scotty excel in their own styles within the genre and could have major careers in Nashville. But the elimination of raspy rebel girl Haley Reinhart this week means next week's finale is going to be a pretty ho-hum affair. Haley the wild child would have brought excitement--a duet with Gaga? a jazz jam with Casey Abrams?--not to mention a real element of suspense. A finale showdown between either of this season's chosen ones, Scotty or Lauren, and underdog Haley would have been a fight of Lambert-vs.-Allen proportions (that is, excellent television), not to mention it would have featured a vaster
