Reality Rocks
  • Sarah Sellers, one of the most-robbed "American Idol" contestants of Season 10 and a food blogger to boot, has been posting her "Idol" viewing-party snack recipes in Reality Rocks all season long, each night whipping up a feast that corresponds to that week's "Idol" theme. For Elton John Week, it was British pub grub; for Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Week, she fried up Elvis-inspired fritters; for Movie Week, nachos and pizza were the main attractions; for 21st Century Week, it was healthy nouveau cuisine; and for last week's Carole King theme, she put her own twist on items off the menu of the famous chain restaurant named after Carole's song, "Hard Rock Cafe."

This week it's a real potluck, as the theme is "Now & Then," with the top 5 contestants singing songs from both the modern age and the 1960s. That means two very different palates much be pleased this week. Last night Sarah served up mouth-wateringly modern Mini Crab Tarts as a "Now" snack, but tonight she swings back to the '60s

  • Wednesday's theme on "American Idol's" top five night was "Now & Then," meaning the contestants each warbled one modern-day tune and one '60s/'70s classic. Among the "Now" songs were a couple of hits by former "Idol" winners and a somewhat leftfield emo rocker, but the most leftfield choice was by Haley Reinhart, who boldly took the "Now" motif truly to heart and performed a song so very now, it hasn't even been commercially released yet.

Yes, in an "Idol" first, a major-label recording star, Lady Gaga, allowed an unreleased tune to be performed by one of the contestants...and Haley did such an excellent job with it, now it's Gaga who may have to worry about "making the song her own" once her version is finally on iTunes. But was it too much of a risk for Haley to do an unknown tune, on such a mainstream show (on which Paul McDonald once got chewed out for covering the semi-obscure Ryan Adams)? The judges seemed to think so, but considering that the contestants are constantly being

  • WATCH PART 1 OF DAVID'S INTERVIEW HERE

In the second instalmment of Reality Rocks' excellent two-part interview with Season 7 "American Idol" champ David Cook, he goes into further detail about his long-awaited new album, This Loud Morning (piano! sitars! orchestral arrangements! theremin! "cinematic moments"! writing credits on every song!), as well as the two-and-a-half-year wait for the follow-up to 2008's David Cook.

"I took the time to get this album right," he says. "It would've been really easy to get a bunch of writers to submit songs and have another album out in four months and be done, but I didn't want to do that because I felt it shortchanged not only myself but my fans. They've been extremely patient, but I think they've been really understanding of why....Now June 28th [the album's release date] can't come soon enough!"

But more importantly, David addresses media-perpetrated fallacies that he's not actually that successful. Despite selling 1.4 million albums and more

Season 7 "American Idol" winner David Cook tends to keep a much lower profile than many pop stars--the self-described homebody freely admits, "I'm not the guy who's going to go clubbing four nights a week"--and it's been a whole two and half years since the release of his first post-"Idol" album and major-label debut, David Cook. This has perhaps created the erroneous public perception that he's gone into early retirement or isn't so successful these days. But nothing could be farther from the truth. In addition to playing hundreds of concerts, the man has sold more than 1.4 million albums and 2 million single downloads, and has been hard at work with superstar producer Matt Serletic on his follow-up, This Loud Morning, which finally comes out in June.

Still, David concedes that he's been out of the game for just a little bit. "I think I had this image of this album maybe taking six months...but then it became very apparent that it was going to be a

  • Over the last few weeks, his purple majesty Prince has been playing a string of shows at L.A.'s fabulous Forum in a star-studded, 21-date residency (including a recent gig with surprise guest Alicia Keys). And this past weekend, Prince was literally dancing with the stars, as Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, and No Doubt's Tony Kanal and Adrian Young boogied onstage alongside "Dancing With The Stars" cast members Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy to Prince's performance of the Time's "The Bird."

You know, if "Dancing With The Stars" was this funky, I would probably watch it every week! Can The Bird be added as one of the required "DWTS" routines, in addition to the cha cha and samba? Just a thought...

  • That Siobhan Magnus sure is a timely girl. Sure, she waited almost exactly one year after coming in sixth on Season 9 of "American Idol" to release her debut single...but when she finally did, she titled it "Beatrice Dream," and put it out the same weekend that Princess Beatrice upstaged everyone at the Royal Wedding with her crazy, Gaga-worthy octopus hat.

Although the timing is surely purely coincidental, it still makes total sense for one of "Idol's" most flamboyant and fearlessly fashion-flouting contestants. (Siobhan could totally rock that hat, by the way--as my little amateur Photoshop experiment at right proves.) Siobhan's song is equally rule-breaking and octopussy: a wild, wiggly bit of multi-tentacled psychedelia that owes strongly in parts to great female-fronted '90s acts like Throwing Muses, the Breeders, Blake Babies, and Bettie Serveert.

Listen to "Beatrice Dream" in all its majesty below, and all hail the return of Princess Siobhan!

  • Last night, Casey Abrams was eliminated from "American Idol"--this time for good, five weeks after America voted him off the first time but the judges wisely decided to save him. (Yes, I still think that was a good decision, although Pia Toscano's diehard fans might ardently disagree with me.) Despite the fact that Casey had been on the chopping block before, his exit in sixth place was still a bit of a shocker, considering that Jacob "Banana Peel Status" Lusk, who was widely predicted to go home this week (and, um, last week), was safe. Even more surprising? That fan favorite Scotty McCreery also appeared to be in the bottom two.

Keep in mind I say "appeared to be," because technically, ANYONE could have been in the bottom last night. Since Ryan Seacrest said he was reading the results "at random," it was unclear if Scotty was really ever at risk, or if the producers had just put him next to Casey for dramatic effect. Well, if it was the latter...then congrats, Nigel Lythgoe, because
