The first top 10 contestant of "American Idol" Season 12 was voted off by America this Thursday, and as I predicted, that contestant was Curtis Finch Jr. His death-spot position on Wednesday, singing first; his hokey song choice, the Fantasia Season 3 coronation song "I Believe"; and the news about his criminal record, which broke in The National Enquirer the day he performed, clearly all hurt him in the end. Nicki Minaj quite vocally opposed this result, and said, "Curtis, if you go home, I'll go home!"--a declaration I am sure many of her haters hoped was a promise, not a threat. I personally hope Nicki didn't mean that, but I do think America got this vote right. America got a lot right this week, actually, but I'll get to all that in a minute.

By Lyndsey Parker | Reality Rocks – Thu, Mar 14, 2013 11:46 AM EDTWednesday was the first coed competitive performance show of "American Idol" Season 12, but judge Nicki Minaj couldn't even be bothered to show up on time for this supposedly momentous occasion. She was a shocking THIRTEEN minutes late for the live taping, missing all of the first performance before finally slinking onto the set in a Unabomber hoodie and Olsen-twin sunglasses. A judge being tardy for a live show? That certainly was an "Idol" first; even loopy Paula Abdul managed to make it to work on time back in the day.
But that was the only "Idol" first this week. The theme of Wednesday's show was songs sung by past "Idol" winners (either covers the Idols did on the show, or Idols' singles), so there was a lot of retreading going on. It sort of felt like a bad episode of "American Idol Rewind." In general, it was just a bad idea. Remember when "So You Think You Can Dance" had contestants reprise past Mia Michaels routines, and it was a total flop? Yeah, it was sort of like that. Nigel Lythgoe clearly will never learn.

photo: Jeffey Mayer/Getty ImagesWhile Season 12's "American Idol" top 10 finalists were being announced this past Thursday on a Los Angeles soundstage, not too far away in West Hollywood, one of the best "Idol" alums of the past few years, Season 10's alt-country songsmith Paul McDonald, was performing with his actress wife Nikki Reed at the pop-up launch party for Joe Fresh at jcp. The musical couple treated partygoers (Stacy Keibler, Rumer Willis, and Bella Thorne among them) to a few acoustic tunes, like "Bouquet Of Lies," "The Best Part," "Crosby Hotel," and their Twilight theme "All I've Ever Needed," as well as a brand-new song, "Misery," which they told the crowd they'd just written.
American Idol, The Day After: Top 10 Reveal Dish
By Lyndsey Parker | Reality Rocks – Fri, Mar 8, 2013 6:15 PM ESTLast night, this season's "American Idol" top 10 finalists were announced, in a bizarre, awkward new format and without any Wild Cards, and my "The Day After" co-host Matt Whitfield and I have mixed feelings about this year's bunch. Watch us dish and disagree about last night's big reveal and big "Idol" afterparty, and Season 12's big (or not-so-big) future, in the chatfest video below...and feel free to leave your own thoughts in the comments section as well.

When it was announced that "American Idol" Season 12's first live results show, on which the top 10 finalists would be revealed, would be a full 90 minutes long, I assumed that meant there'd be some wiggle-room for a few Wild Card performances. I mean, how else was Nigel Lythgoe going to pad an entire hour and a half?Oh, but I should not have doubted Fox's ability to find new ways to make a process that could have been completed in five minutes feel like five hours. No, people, there were no Wild Cards on this Thursday's semifinals results show. There was, in fact, just a top 10. And every single one of the top 10, upon hearing their good news, did a victory song. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.
And then each contestant was critiqued by the judges, just to kill more time--except the singers weren't really critiqued, since having Nicki Minaj say, "That wasn't it, ladybug," or Randy Jackson exclaim, "Dawg, that was a mess!" probably would've sucked the wind right out of the contestants'

By Lyndsey Parker | Reality Rocks – Thu, Mar 7, 2013 6:14 PM ESTLast night, the "American Idol" top 10 boys competed for spots in the overall top 10 finals, and while my icy-hearted "The Day After" co-host Matt Whitfield (the bad cop to my good cop, obviously) was unmoved by poor Charlie Askew's emotional display, I was deeply saddened to see the kid hurting so badly on national TV. There's a part of me that hopes he makes it through tonight, because I like him and don't want to see his dreams get crushed, but there's another part of me that worries what will happen to this fragile, sensitive boy if he continues on the show.
But you know made me just as sad--and made Matt as sad as well? How boring last night's ballad-heavy show was. Filled with treacle by R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, and even Perry Como, not much about the episode felt current or cool. Now it's pretty hard to predict which of these boys will make it to the top 10, or which will have any chance of prevailing over the girls once they do.
