  • There are times when I've actually felt a little bad for Kris Allen. Yes, I know that sounds weird: How could anyone feel sorry for the guy who won on the biggest show on TV? But Kris spent the entire eighth American Idol season being labeled the "dark horse" and having to prove himself to Simon Cowell over and over again. And although he was ultimately (and some would say unexpectedly) the winner of this year's Idol, snagging the majority of the finale's whopping 100 million votes, most of the media attention--from Rolling Stone cover stories to 20/20 interviews to (YES, I freely admit it) this very blog--has still focused on the "frontrunner" that Kris beat out, second-placer Adam Lambert.

Despite Kris's constant humility on Idol, whether auditioning (when he declared, "There's probably better singers than me"), winning (when he reacted, unscriptedly, with "Adam deserves this"), or dealing with post-finale Glambertmania, I've always wondered...doesn't he secretly resent this? Doesn't

  • Well, these are six words I never thought I'd hear come out of Simon Cowell's mouth: "I don't always get it right."

Although Simon has very occasionally apologized to a harshly criticized American Idol contestant, Simon rarely admits he's made a mistake. And to be honest, he rarely DOES make a mistake. Sometimes--in fact, most of the time--his critiques are unnecessarily cruel, but they're usually dead-on correct.

However, in a letter to U.K. paper The Daily Mail this past weekend, Simon discussed his other popular show, Britain's Got Talent, after an extremely controversial season that included sobbing underage contestants and the very public post-finale emotional meltdown of frontrunner Susan Boyle after she placed second. "I, of course, am inevitably portrayed as the evil ringmaster. I didn't get into show business to make little children cry or upset a nice lady like Susan Boyle," Simon wrote. "The time has finally come for me to set a few things straight."

    He added, candidly:

  • What IS it about Adam Lambert that turns perfectly stable, relatively sane adult women into blathering fangirls?

Seriously, I've had the honor and privilege of interviewing many celebrities in my career, and I've always kept it pretty together...but something about getting 15 minutes of fame in Glambert's dressing room, during downtime in his Idols Live Tour rehearsal schedule, reduced both my IQ and interview skills to that of a flunky from the Chris Farley School Of Journalism (a la Farley's classic SNL skits).

I mean, just LOOK at the above photo of me basking in Glambert's glittery, guylinered presence, hoping some of his magical mystical pixiedust will brush off on me. My grin could not be cheesier if I'd extracted my teeth and replaced them all with cheddar snack-tray cubes.

Of course, what I embarrassingly lacked in professionalism (and in ability to steady my nervous, seemingly acute-palsy-stricken hands on my camera; I apologize in advance for any viewing-induced motion

  • Although he's too humble to admit it, I sincerely believe that David Cook's victory last year on American Idol paved the way for Idol season 8. While other rock Idols, most notably Chris Daughtry, had achieved success before David, no rocker had ever won on the show, and Idol seemed very much the domain of mostly pop and R&B singers. But David changed all that, opening up the show to a whole new fanbase.

Want proof of this? Well, just look at how this past season panned out. The top four was decidedly non-pop this year, featuring two full-on rockers (Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta) and a mellow soft-rocker, Kris Allen, who won the whole competition over more obvious pop/R&B types. I honestly believe David Cook helped make this possible.

Of course, David, probably one of the nicest guys on the planet, is too modest to consider himself any sort of "pioneer." But still, I tried to get him to take a little credit when--a full year after his glass-ceiling-shattering Idol triumph, during

  • I can already tell this season of So You Think You Can Dance is going to be rough on me. The caliber of talent is so high this season that no matter who goes home, in any given week, I'm going to be bummed. Tonight SYTYCD fans lost two more great dancers, but I suppose, in my opinion at least, it could have been worse.

Of the bottom three couples tonight, one of them was not a surprise to me: Jason and Caitlin. Their hip-hop routine last night was a disappointment: They seemed lost, out of sync, inauthentic, and lacking in confidence overall. They're obviously both fabulous dancers, but last night they just didn't adapt to the hip-hop genre well at all.

Oddly, also in the bottom tonight were Kupono and Ashley, the other couple that danced a Shane Sparks-choreographed routine this week. Apparently Shane's return to the show (after being on America's Best Dance Crew) was a somewhat anti-climactic comeback. While Kupono and Ashley's routine last night was a letdown after their stunning

  • Wow, this was a night of eye-popping, jaw-dropping surprises on So You Think You Can Dance. Some couples that had totally danced under my radar so far unexpectedly wowed me, while others that I thought were shoo-ins stumbled (sometimes literally). But overall, tonight's top 18 episode was, minus commercials, about 97 minutes of awesomeness.

Here, in order of most awesome to least awesome (in my opinion), are my assessments of tonight's nine couples:

    Jonathan & Karla: Contemporary
It's hard to fathom that this couple almost went home last Thursday, after watching this glorious standout routine. What a difference a week--and the addition of a new choreographer, Stacey Tookey of So You Think You Can Dance Canada--can make! Creating pure onstage magic to the Once movie theme "Falling Slowly" (the gorgeously goosebumpy ballad Kris Allen warbled in one of his most memorable American Idol moments, by the way), these two were so believable that I wondered if the show should be retitled So You

  • Sharon Leming, beloved mother of American Idol underdog Josiah Leming (and eight other children), passed away yesterday after a five-year battle with cancer. She was only 39 years old.

When Josiah auditioned for Idol last season, he left behind his ailing mother--but she wanted him to pursue his musical dream, even if it meant temporarily leaving her side and, famously, living out of his car. She supported Josiah as much as he supported her.

And eventually her encouragement paid off: While Josiah was not selected to be in last season's Idol top 36 (to the shock of many), he still eventually landed a record deal with Warner Bros. and released the critically heralded Angels Undercover EP (with a full album to follow). I'm sure Sharon was very proud, and that she was delighted she'd lived long enough to see Josiah's dream come true.

For more information on Sharon's brave struggle, check out her blog, My Life With Cancer, and also look for her in Josiah's documentary-style "Angels

  • know I declare this every season...but I've never been as excited about a So You Think You Can Dance season as I am this year. Just when I thought the Fox franchise might no longer have legs (heh heh), the show has surprised me and returned with possibly its most gifted cast to date. After watching the top 20 compete for the first time last night--creating gravity-defying, spacetime-continuum-distorting, joint-dislocating stunts with their phenomenal bodies that seemingly only CGI'd superheroes ought to be able to pull off with such ease--my own jaw joint was practically dislocated from hitting the floor.

Yes, the SYTYCD talent this year is nothing short of stunning. It's a shame any of them had to go home so soon tonight, on the first elimination episode of season 5. I personally wasn't ready to see any of them leave just yet.

At least I got some relief early in the show, before even the first commercial break, when two of my favorite couples from last night, Evan & Randi and

  • Well, So You Think You Can Dance's Vegas Week just rushed by. It was more like Vegas DAY, really. While American Idol's equivalent, Hollywood Week, was extended this year so that viewers could really get to know all the contestants--quirks, crying jags, and all--on SYTYCD all of this season's callback auditions were condensed into a single episode. As a result, surprise Vegas eliminations were hardly explained (Natalie Reid), some contestants who'd made memorable impressions during their initial auditions were inexplicably M.I.A. (Kelsea Taylor), and many dancers--aside from maybe Tony Bellissimo, Evan Kasprzak, Brandon Bryant, and Philip Chbeeb--advanced to the top 20 having had very little TV exposure at all. Until tonight's first competitive round, the majority of this season's top 20 were in fact still strangers to most of America.

But, frustrating as the lack of Vegas Week coverage was, perhaps it was a good thing. Because it meant that most of tonight's competitors were likely to

  • As I excitedly prepare to watch the kickoff of the So You Think You Can Dance top 20 competitive round tonight, I'm still confused as to why this season's Brandon Bryant has become such a polarizing and "controversial" figure.

Last week when the SYTYCD top 20 were revealed, judge/choreographer Mia Michaels kind of ruined the moment for Brandon (a repeat auditioner from last season) by barking at him: "I can't take you. What you bring to the floor annoys the sh*t out of me. In Vegas, you just rubbed me the wrong way."

Lil' C was less nasty, as he is always one calm and cool cat. But he too expressed his doubts about Brandon's talent and alleged bad attitude.

Fellow judges Mary Murphy and Debbie Allen quickly jumped to Brandon's defense--Mary more vociferously, of course--and Brandon remained even cooler and calmer than Lil' C, confidently telling his detractors, "It's ON!"

But I was not as calm. I was a bit angry, actually. Why all the Brandon hate? The guy is incredible!

    But then I
